End of Day 3 of Windows

It's almost over!

Well earlier in the day I told you my story about having to install and reinstall Vista a few times, so now that the day is coming to a close I wanted to report on the progress I have made.

  1. Vista installed and working on both PC's
  2. Most applications installed
  3. Data transferred back to PC's
  4. Disk image made of laptop.
  5. Application setup nearly done.

Tomorrow morning I just need to do a few small things to get Parallels setup with XP, make an image of my desktop drive, then that should be it.

I also want to take a moment and tell you how much I appreciate software like Stardock Central.  I really can't say how many applications I had to reinstall, and some (like Office 2007) take a bit of time to install.  Windows Vista itself takes only about 25 minutes to install, it's the other applications that take hours and hours to get done.

It's just so easy to load up Stardock Central, select the applications I want to install, and just forget about it.

Just did a Vista reinstall myself... had all sorts of problems with it stalling and stopping during the process... which after several failed attempts, I discovered was due to an external hard-drive preventing the installation completing, for some strange reason. Once I unplugged the drive from my PC, Vista installed inside of 21 minutes...probably thanks to my new AMD Athlonx2 6400 3.2ghz Black Edition CPU and 4 gigs of DDR 800 RAM

The install was considerably quicker than with my old AMD athlonx24600 2.4ghz and 4 gigs of DDR400, as it was with all my programs/apps (most were installed within a couple of hours) ... but as you say, thank goodness for Stardock Central. I just selected the apps I wanted and let it run while I had dinner... all was installed by the time I had eaten and was ready to run after a quick reboot.

Yup, SDC is one almighty app alright, but Impulse sound so exciting...roll on the release of Impulse. :CONGRAT:

Just did a clean install of Vista too. Everything went nice and smooth.

After it's all done I'm glad, but it's such a hassle to get it done.

Just curious as to why all the reinstalls? Problems or upgrades? Curious......

Mine was due to a enforced hardware upgrade... my old 939 socket mobo had a fault, meaning I had to also replace my CPU and RAM because AMD/ASUS 938 socket technology is no longer supported/available here in Oz.

Although Vista repaired itself to run on the new hardware, I was not satisfied with its performance (felt it could have been much better due to improved RAM/CPU speeds) so did a clean install to better utilise the OS and new hardware configuration... and I'm glad I did.

Everything positively zips along now... though I'm still baffled as to why my external drive prevented a complete install, given that it's an identical drive to the one Vista is on. I first thought that it may have been due to the data stored on it, but being that's backed up skins, wallpapers, documents and emails, I now have to doubt that theory... the drive is plugged in again and the data has been restored to Vista C:/, and there are no issues to speak of. :NOTSURE:

Heck i wish I could do a clean install of Vista to rid myself of all the useless HP programs and trialware but HP doesn't give out Vista CDs. So I'm stuck cleaning all the HP "crap" programs one by one... :(

My pc was dual boot XP/Vista. Haven't been into XP for over two months, so I decided it was time for a clear out. I'm now Vista only  :)
