Do wallpapers have to be BMP?

Do wallpapers have to be BMP?

I could have sworn I downloaded some that were PNG, but the upload information says (or seems to say) that you are supposed to zip up your wallpaper as a BMP.

I'm wondering because I'm under the impression that PNG is lossless and it takes up a lot less space than a BMP.

Anyone know for sure??

Which is why I guess I was surprized when I realized that Tiggs' wallpaper was in PNG format. So, I guess it's ok if I just use that??I hate PNG, more often than not Windows won't apply it. I have to end up opening PS and saving it as jpg.

OK ... so that's odd. Windows has no trouble applying PNGs for me.

Is there anything consistent about the world these days??
