"I Was Raped" T-Shirt

Feminist writer Jennifer Baumgardener has created a T-shirt that reads "I was raped" as part of multimedia rape awareness project. Baumgardener aims to force the taboo issue of rape into everyday conversation. Not surprisingly, the T-shirt is causing a fair amount controversy.--Buzzfeed.com

This t-shirt was created by the same woman who made one which said "I had an abortion."

She says it to create awareness...

What do you think?

Would you wear it?  Think its a good idea for a wife, daughter, or girlfriend to wear?

An excellent observation. ;)

But to the point of Baumgardner, it is going to have the exact opposite effect. Crying wolf does not raise the awareness of wolves, just devalues the message and messenger.

A little equal time on the "I had an Abortion" T-shirt.

As for the "I was Raped" T-shirt, I think it feeds more into the whole victim mentality than raising awareness.

Once again... "victim = respect".

Who says she's crying wolf?

I'm not saying that I think the t-shirt is a good idea, but I think it's a jump to assume that anyone who wears it is lying.

We call these people "attention whores" where I'm from.

Now, getting raped is horrible, don't get me wrong...but some women like to either lie about it or bring it up as some badge of "honor" just to get attention and pity.  Wearing a shirt like this makes me think it's something alone the same line.

Did not say they were. They may all have been raped, or none of them. But it cheapens the impact to make it a madison avenue slogan.

There are 2 points to the boy who cried wolf. one was the lie. The other (and the one I was going for) was the devaluation of the message. Rape is a fact. But yelling it every time a man and woman have sex is devaluing the real crime.

The thing is, I read she wants all women to wear them to get people talking about rape.

I think its inappropriate because it makes the subject the equivalent of a bumper sticker.  You can't give the subject its due most of the time when you read it on a woman's chest.

I wouldn't wear it and I once wore a t-shirt that said, "Yeah, I think you're cute.  But buy your own fu--in drink."  It was actually spelled out, haha.

The thing is, this shirt isn't just for the raped, its for the 'I want to talk about rape'-ers too.

I used to have a favorite tee to wear that read "You're ugly and your mother dresses you funny". It was my favorite to wear out to a bar. :D

I need to get another one made, along with one that reads "There are 10 kinds of people in the world, those who understand binary and those who don't"

Right now I'm wearing one that reads "Quit yer bitchin, trucking ain't for sissies"

Is JU buggy today or is it just me?

Anyway, on a lighter note, a good comment to this shirt, "Who'd rape YOU?"

hahahahaha

I don't think rape is something that should be made light of. The t-shirt idea, while based on good intentions, sort of does that. You can see that from some of the comments on this thread.

Everyone knows what rape is and that it's serious. It's the idea of this tee shirt that is being made light of. Perspective is important. Besides, I thought my original comment was quite good and in no way makes light of rape itself.

When it comes to humor no topic is taboo.

That was my point. I guess I didn't make that clear.

I don't think this shirt is going to prompt awareness or constructive discussion.

Ah ok, now I getcha. No you weren't quite clear, or maybe I'm just more dense than usual today

While I too agree with the intentions, I don't think this is the best way to raise awareness.  But having said that, I am a fan of tshirt messages so if it gets a few people talking about the subject who previously wouldn't have, she has achieved her objective.

T-shirts should make people smile imo.

I don't either.  Besides, what kind of discussion do women who wear these shirts want to have with strangers?

Call me crazy, but if I was raped, I don't think its something I'd put on a bumper sticker, or a t-shirt, or anywhere else that might give someone the ammo to hurt me, again.

I think her objective is herself, and people talk about her more than the shirts.

I could become fairly desensitized to rape if a lot of women started wearing these shirts.  Just like everything else, think about it enough and it starts to not look so bad.:NOTSURE:

Mason: Heh, no you're not having a dense day. I am not always the best at putting my thoughts out there.

I agree with you too, Tova, that the lady's motivation is probably not the most pure. I love how you can buy t-shirts for all sorts of causes for close to $50 and you can "help" the cause by buying it because, after all, 5% of the proceeds go to *insertcausehere*.

That would actually be a great t-shirt.
