Basic tech editor question

Seems like the best way to learn the tech editor would be to look at one or more of the standard race tech trees in the editor.  But I can't figure out how to open (eg) the Terran tech tree.  When I hit Ctrl+O from the tech editor screen, I see Documents/My Games/, which does not contain any .xml files.  Basically it's an empty folder.  Searching for .xml files, I can't find any that look like tech trees anywhere in the GC2 directories.  How does one go about editing the game's existing tech trees?  (Also, how do you open and edit existing ship components, etc?)

Yes it's very confusing and not at all intuitive or easy to find or of course documented.

On My PC, I downloaded via Stardock and installed Stardock on my D: drive they could be found in;

D:\Stardock\TotalGaming\GalCiv2\Twilight\Metaversedata\English\Tech Trees\

No where near the default directory the editor opens into and not documented with the editor of course.

I still haven't tracked down the vanilla data for most the other editors yet.

Honestly I've decided to leave the editors until someone produces some sort of documentation.

If you're going to edit the game, it's best to only do so to the base Data\English files, rather than the metaversedata ones. The latter will stick you with a cheat flag in every metaverse game you play until you reinstall. But yes, if you wish to edit the base files (rather than simply create new ones for mods), you'll need to browser to the Data folder in whatever location you installed the game at.

Follow-up question: if we're designing custom weapons, where can we find the models for them? I'm having trouble finding models/animations when I'm prompted with a browse window.

Models are located in Gfx\Models under the game's location.
