Star Assault fails to startup completely...

I get to an introduction menu with little or no functionality and only a partial screen is shown...

I am having problems with Star Assault. I have tried downloading from both impulse and Stardock to the same effect. It loads to a partial window with little functionality. I have access to the main menu but cannot start a new game. When I go to the various config submenus I can only see a portion of what should be the full screen inside the partial window. Tried to name/build a character and start anyhow to no affect, the continue game icon stays red. Please advise on possible solutions...

I had that same problem, if you can see the resolution options try changing it, that fixed it for me.
It's a terrible game anyway, totally unplayable.

I solved it by right-clicking the executable and choosing the never-before-used option "disable visual themes" from the compatibility tab.

Once I entered the game I killed a single enemy before deciding that this was the worst space game I've tried yet. I always fall for these things because I still dream of Elite.
