Shuffle shuffle hitch-step blues

Johnny L.’s getting old
he’s still cool and for eighty-sum
years his shuffle still has a hitch to it
and he’s still quick on the draw

waiting for the elevator pulling
his coat close and pulling his old
driving hat down over the corner of
his face, leaving one eye open so he
could wink his trademark sparkle

“Hey big man, what’s happen’n?”
he slides his palm over mine, pulls
back and points his finger like a gun
he couldn’t be smoother

on the way down he said “ gotta
get me some air--that woman is
making my ears chaff.”

seems that Janice the “Bag Lady”
had taken it upon herself to become
his new impromptu girlfriend
she comes down and rattles about
voodoo spells and Haitian witch doctors
cooks him dinner and takes the
leftovers home

at the bottom as we walked out into
the cool of the evening air, I said
“Ah, you’re just getting old, Johnny”
“no shit, big man, no shit.”
then he did the shuffle shuffle hitch step
over to the bench and sat down.
