BTW, guys, I got LOTR, TTT today. It was great, despite what ya'll say. And tomorrow my widescreen tv arrives so I get to watch it all over again. I guess that means I probably won't be finishing up my game anytime soon unless I get lucky tonight. No, not that kind of lucky!

Grathocke, don't get me wrong. I enjoyed TTT, as a stand alone movie it is excellent. Just when you compare it to the previous movie and to the actual novel (TTT) it falls a bit short.

The great thing about either of these movies is their ability to stand on their own. But I disagree with you on its inability to compare with the original. They each have different themes and tones. The second is far grander in scope and begins to move us into the sweeping epic of the story, while the first is far more personal. The first is very light, while the second is quite dark. I assume ROTK will be even darker, grander, and more epic from what I have seen. I was a film major in college back some ten or twenty lifetimes ago. One thing you learn is that you CANNOT make a book into a movie and do it literally. A book is to be savored. A movie is to be experienced. The two media are mutually exclusive in their abilities to convey the same story. Further, you will NEVER make a movie that completely satisfies devotees of a book. All that said, I think that every aspect of these movies, from casting to acting, from cinematography to directing, from art direction and props is magnificent. The fact that Elijah was never even considered for the role until he went out in the woods and made his own little Frodo video and sent it to Peter is one of those casting tales that will go down in history beside that of GWTW and Vivien Leigh, IMHO, well maybe not soooo humble.

I quite agree that you cannot make a novel into a movie and do it literally. Though I was not a film major I did room with one in college (does that qualify me to continue???) There are specific parts of TTT that departed from the novel and yet did nothing to improve the movie. For instance why take lines from secondary characters and give them to main characters, it was not the hobbits who tricked the Ents into attacking and the king of Rodin called the charge at Helmsdeep. The writers do this throughtout the movie. The main characters are so strong they don't need to be imbelished with lines from secondary characters. It only weakens the secondary characters. Why depict Faramere as weak like his brother when the strength of his character is that he resists the lure of the ring when his brother could not. You see I am talking about minor things, not major. I understand that they had to consolidate and keep the story fluid and interesting. Some of there decisions just didn't seem to further the story. Forgive and mispelled character etc., it has been a while since I read the books

The basic reason for doing this is you don't need to introduce more minor characters. In a book there is time to do this. In a movie, even one as long as these are, there isn't. Also, you're already paying the main actors huge sums of money, so why pay others to say the line?



I got a different impression than you. I saw Faramere as embodying the weakness of men in general. But he did rise above it and did resist the power in the end.

The biggest thing that ticked me off about TTT (other than the ents' descision to fight being totally rewritten) is that they ended it before Frodo 'dies'.

That would have made for a good cliffhanger.. and then we could all wear 'Frodo lives!' t-shirts until RotK came out

And that is unusual, for Hollywood to miss a marketing opportunity.

Well my point about stealing lines is that they are not stealing them from characters who are not in the movie. They are taking them from characters who already have active roles. In fact quite often the character is in the same scene. Even in the 1st movie (LOTR) it is not Frodo who comes up with the riddle to open the moongate to the Dwarven City it is Gandalf. WHy change it?? What did it serve?? Nothing...Anyway there is no point in debating it. I am an old grump and set in my ways, so I will never like the 2nd movie as much as the 1st. But I do hope that the third is better than both. Which is a high bar since LOTR was so good.

The Grumps Anonymous meeting has been going on a bit. A stranger quitely walks into the Grange Hall just as Grump Surther finishes: "I am an old grump and set in my ways!" The respected elder grump leaves the podium to return to his seat. The stranger makes his way to the podium and starts the first step required in recognizing and understanding his problem: "My name is Gerakken and I am a grump..."
