couple questions

1) I notice that one's military rating seems tied only to the number of military ships you have, not their quality. I've gotten 4 Rangers when the best I see elsewhere is corvettes, and not seen my military score go up (even waiting a turn for it to update).

2) It seems that the AI will often declare war on you for precious little reason, and refuse to make peace.

As an example, in my recent game, I'm 2nd, out of 5, in military force. The Drengin, #1 in military, but on the other side of a medium galaxy, have declared war on me...even though they can barely get to me and have been losing at about a 10-1 ration - the wonders of defense - and have juicer targets nearby. Then the Torians and Altarians declared war too - even though they are weaker than I.

If I make peace, it lasts about 3 turns.

They aren't much of a threat, but I can' go on the offensive facing all three. Am I missing something here in regards to not getting war declared on me?

Military rating is currently tied to the total attack of your ships so a lot of corvettes could ramp up that rating. It is supposed to take into account defense in 1.04. You can try clicking on the military rating graph button to refresh it.

War can be declared for alignment reasons as well. So if you are evil (or it would seem to me - less than 50 in alignment) you would attract attacks. You could also slip into war if you refuse to pay tribute while the relations is hostile.
