Creeps

Speaking as one who doesnt havent access to Beta 1 and who never even played Warcraft, let alone Defense of the Ancients, I'd like to know more about creeps.

Here's what I've puzzled out so far:

  • They are autonomously spawned periodically from portals
  • Players have no control over them.
  • There are different types.

Here's some things I'd like to know:

  • Why are they called Creeps?
  • What are the different types and what do they do?
  • How influential are they on the outcome of the game?
  • Are the controllable units that Generals get considered Creeps?
  • How easy is it for an Assassin type Demigod to be overwhelmed by them? A General type?

And anything else you guys can tell me.

1) Dunno why they are called creeps.

2) Minotaur, basic melee with axe. Archer, has a bow. Priest, heals and has some attack. Some catapult beast, throws rocks at buildings. Angels, make swooping attacks with two swords. Giants, huge monsters walking around with a pillar of stone they hit people with.

3) In beta 1 (engine test) they are extremely important, both because you need them to level up, and to push your own attack.

4) I don't know if they are refered to as creeps, but I don't think so.

5) In beta 1, engine test, the melee assassins would last about 20-30 seconds without items. Ranged assassins lasted significantly longer (but also ran out of mana so going back to the heal/mana beacon was still good).

Creeps are the major part of the "flow" of battle back and forth between your and your enemy's base. They do most of the fighting, and you play a single assassin taking part in that war, or a general with some units to command on your own. The creeps spawn continously, and increase in numbers and power as time goes along (in the beginning, only basic soldiers spawn, then archers, then priests, and so on).

But in Beta 2, we'll be upgrading which we get, how much damage they do, hot much armor/health? they have and how often they spawn :D

You realize, they aren't Creeps right?

Thanks, heaven, that was very informative.

Now why arent what called creeps?

Creeps is a holdover from Warcraft 3, and probably not really appropriate for Demigod. You could call them Grunts, Minions or whatever else you can come up with.

Also, apart from the ones mentioned, Generals will be able to buy upgraded versions of most of them (Minotaur Captain, Siege Archers, High Priests) and command them like individually, from what we've been told.

I belive that creeps is a term for creature. I think i'm right cause creeps are just creatures in warcraft 3 that you kill to gain level/gold/items.

I think it's actually a bit of a carry-over from tower defense games, never mind Warcraft...

Who knows where the term comes from?  But anyways, it's just the general term for any non-aligned creature in these sorts of games.  I believe, however, that if they are not aggressive and otherwise not important to the game but are just there for atmosphere, they are usually termed "critters"... I think that term comes from WC II.

I remember being asked this once and not knowing the answer and feeling like a dumbass. Hahaha.

Creeps, critters, grunts, morons, fodder, whatever they are; they are doomed to fight and fight. Sucks to be them. XD

No critters are totally differnt critters are little animals that walk or fly around. Creeps fight but are not controlled by a person or a specific computer person usually.

the game itself refers to them as grunts, afaik, in the statistics screen at the end of the game. which also sounds more appropriate than creeps- those units are the grunts, cannonfodder, compared to the allmighty (or sometimes not really so) demigods ;-)

also, during the game it often says 'our allies are attacking the enemy citadel' or whatever..

The most interesting question: Do the creep upgrades influence the generals minions?

no upgrades in citadel i really doubt up minions and so the grunts are your allies

"Creeps" is just a generalized term for NPC characters that players kill for exp and gold and whatnot. As far as I can tell, it originated in Warcraft 3 as a name for neutral-hostile creatures in melee maps serving the aforementioned purpose, and later popularized as an all-purpose term.
