What annoys me about SINS

I like playing SINS and Entrenchment but there are certain 'features' of the game that annoy me:

1) Not all ship types join fleets.   Even though I've got the rally point on the fleet and the ships move to the fleet they don't join the fleet.  Why can't I control/set which ship types will join fleets?  Why isn't this set for all ship types?  if I don't want them in the fleet I can remove them after they join the fleet.

2) A rally point on a fleet really isn't on the fleet.  It's on the ship which is the flagship for the fleet.  If that ship gets destroyed all the ships heading towards the fleet stop moving because they have lost their rally point.  Why can't I set a rally point on the fleet itself so even if the flagship has changed they continue towards the fleet?

3) Giving an order to some ships in a fleet causes those ships to leave the fleet.  I have a cap ship with heavy damage so I give it an order to jump out of the system.  I have frigates which I target to have them attack a specific orbital structure like a factory.  These ships leave the fleet cause I gave them an order different from the rest of the fleet.  If I wanted to have them leave the fleet I do have a 'leave fleet' button but there appears to be no way for me to keep these ships in the fleet when I give these orders.

4) I can't see who's in a game forming up unless I join the game.  When someone creates a game and changes the default game name (xxxxx - New) you can't really tell who's running the game.  Is he some noob or an experienced player?  I have to join the game to find this out.  Why can't I see this info outside of the game?

you need to manually create a fleet to join and/or not all ships are set to defualt auto join

scouts, seige vessals, and anti structrure vessals are defualted to not auto join there for you have to turn the auto join fleet option on manually

i dont really know about the others though

ad 1) well, customisability would not be a bad thing. I mean for me personally, there are some ship classes I don't want to auto join. colony ships, sieges, constructors, sometimes scouts. but that may be different for others and of course depends on the situation. if we ever do get more choice over what should or should not join, I'd certainly be happy about it.

ad 2) I'm guess that has to do with technical stuff, the engine. likewise, I'd enjoy if the really point were on the fleet and not individual ships, but it may not be easily possible.

ad 3) I haven't even noticed that in detail. I think I saw it once, but I think it's a rather recent issue. in any case, I always had problems, when I tried to send a singe ship to retreat and then the whole fleet would execute the order. I think it even happened when I 'unfleeted' the ship before. pretty annoying. well, have to look into this more to make a good verdict.

ad 4) hm, yeah, could help, I can imagine this would be a problem. maybe the game could auto integrate some measure for player experience. like under game options or whatever, make a mean of players game/ win/ loss count or that of the host. it's not a perfect indicator, but better than nothing. or have a dialogue that asks host to classify their game as 'noob' 'adept' or 'pro'.

1) Would you rather have some extra ships left behind during an attack, or a bunch of colony ships, constructors (costs as much as a cap, if you haven't got entrenchment), and other misc ships getting nuked because they joined by default?

Sins succeeds because by default the various ship options are set to something SAFE, not something good for every situation.

2) Haven't noticed this myself, if it's true that's pretty unfortunate.  Have you tried setting the rally point to different things, like for instance the fleet icon in the empire tree, or the icon above the flagship?  Sorry if I'm being redundant, it's hard to tell how much experience a person at random has with the game.

PERSONALLY, I would not want single, lone ships traveling on their way to "the front" as they are built - I would much rather give them a rally point in relatively safe territory, then move them all as a group.  You could very easily forget about the position of your flagship/fleet and have your ships running, one at a time, through enemy or contested space.

Try setting a rally at a planet near their intended destination, it's really a better idea in the long run.  Lone ships flying around... that'll bite you in the ass one day.

3) Again, I'm not 100% sure about this one.  I don't play Sins (or any other games for that matter) very often, although I play it more often than most of my other stuff.  Anyways, I recall situations where I told ships to retreat from a battle, as you said, and then they immediately jumped back intoo the fight - because they naturally are supposed to be part of the fleet.  Perhaps in the intervening time it was tweaked so they permanently left the fleet.  IMHO that works better anyway.

Having them leave the fleet is a much better alternative than having them return to a battle with 1/4 of their HP left.  Also, I believe you can set units to control groups (ctrl+1, etc) and these shouldn't be affected by what fleet they're in.  I almost exclusviely use control groups or else select one of the "pip bars" (left side of planet when zomed out) when I want all the units in a given system to move together.

You can select the pip bars from multiple planets (as in your example, ships which retreated from battle) and give them all a common destination as well.

Finally there's one other thing you could try - there's an automatic "retreat from battle" button in the commands menu, and it probably has a hotkey.  When you activate this, the ship will jump to the nearest friendly planet - this way you don't need to take your focus off the battle at all, even to tell it where you want your ships to retreat TO.  It's a really cool feature actually... and perhaps doing this won't cause them to be removed from the fleet either - I don't know tbh.

4) I've never played a game with info described in the way you're saying.  How exactly do you tell whether they're a noob or an ace regardless?  You'd have to ask them, right?  So why not look for games titled things like "veteran game" versus things like "noob game, learning" etc... maybe the problem is people not being descriptive enough in their game titles, rather than the game itself.

...Besides which, total game time means nothing about a player's actual skill level, nor does their self-description of how good they are.  Someone might say they're experts.... but not mention they've only played against the AI.

I can see that in the fleet key assignments but it's not bound to a key - it doesn't appear to be in the UI.  Will have to play with this to see how it works.  Thanks.

The problem is SINS is deciding for me what is safe.  Sometimes I want scouts in my fleets as they can find mines in Entrenchment.  Sometimes I don't because they should be out searching.  But there is no control over this exept to take the game defaults which is annoying if I don't like the defaults.

i personly dont use fleets I see no reason to make a fleet

why because i set realy points on planets and move them to where i want them

Ok, getting close to my bedtime but I'll try this... can't you select a shipyard, and depending on the settings you give for it, every ship that comes out of that shipyard will have the same settings?  Such as, auto-join.  I can't actually check at the moment because the most recent entrenchment update requires you to fully reinstall the game it seems...

Are all your concerns addressed now?  I'll check back tomorrow if I remember.
