My new toy...

My new toy...

I pensioned off the P4/3.0 and dragged my system into the 90's

The old box served well for over half a decade ..... but eventually life was passing me by.... particularly during the FULL boot time being around 10 minutes....

It was [in its day] a fairly decent machine...P4/3.0 in an ASUS P4P800e Deluxe mobo with 2 gig [4x500] ram and eventually about the 'fastest' AGP card still around....a HD3850 with 512 GDDR3...all in an old Lian Li P60, powered by a TruePower 550 Watt PSU.

Then I got hacked....ending up as a mule server for email spam [I think] ... along with my having a Win 7 RC to experiment with prompted me to 'do it' sooner, rather than later.

So, off I went to my fave Comp shop armed with a list...

...and a credit card.

Just a little time later.... I had a boot full of boxes and not much money left.

Thursday last it was....as I get it all home and eagerly started poking and prodding and lots of RTFM-ing.

Friday, and out came the drill and jigsaw to cut a hole into the MoBo tray of the Case ..... so the after-market cooler would fit.... bugger of a bloody big thing it was, too.

By Saturday arvo I was sitting at the dining table with fingers in my ears as I switched it on...no OS, etc....no Keyboard or Mouse .... just to see if lights would come on....and there'd be NO smoke......

They did...and there wasn't.

Sunday...was OS time...so in went Win7 RC1 [32 bit].

Took 4/5ths of eff-all time to install and there it was in all its quasi-Vista 'splendour'.

About the only way to describe it all  [other than black - as in the box] was/is "fucking fast".

I ain't got the MoBo drivers all in [Win7 compatibility]...and haven't rebooted yet since the Graphic Card driver install....

Can't even see it in real detail/scale as it's currently on a 17" CRT ....

...and I'm learning all about what won't always work as expected [like Sysmetrix]...but darn it's good...;)

The 'bits' I already have....to migrate across to the new machine ar the bits that plug in .... The DiNovo Edge KB ...the MS Explorer mouse ...the ASUS M221u LCD....scanners....printers....Logitech G15 wheel and pedals...etc.

What I got....

Lian Li PC-A6010 case [black]

Antec TruePower Quattro 1000w PSU

ASUS P6T-se  X58 i7 MoBo

Intel i7 920 2.66Ghz LGA1366 CPU

OCZ 6G-Triple [3x2G] PC12800 Gold Ram

CoolerMaster V8 CPU Cooler [that bloodey big thing]

Vantec EZ2 Sata hot-swap racks x2

1TB Seagate Sata2 7200 HD x2 [for backup/data]

250G Seagate Sata2 7200 HD x2 [for OS]

ACR-105 Multi card reader

LG Sata DVD-RW x2

XFX 1G GTX285 Black Edition [vid]

When Win7 is finally released I'll opt for the 64bit ver...and possibly double the ram....;)

Funniest thing is....I thought sysmetrix wasn't working....looking at CPU load and ram usage.....till I looked closer....;)

Wanna buy a slighlty used 19" LCD to replace that CRT?

You don't have a ghost of a chance selling it here. :-" ;)

Just get rid of that Win 7 RC and get Vista x64. It would be a step in the right direction - I personally do not like Win 7.O:)

Nice man.  I know exactly what you're going through; I just built myself a new rig a few weeks ago.  Nothing quite as impressive as the lumbering giant you gave birth to, but...

NZXT Apollo Black ATX case

Gigabyte MA790XT-UD4P MoBo

AMD Phenom II X3 BE (currently clocked at 3.6 GHz)

HIS Radeon 4870 512 IceQ4+ Turbo (Factory OC'd)

4 gigs Corsair DDR3 RAM 1666MHz

500GB Western Digital Caviar HDD

Ultra LSP750 750-Watt PSU

Cooler Master Hyper Z600R CPU heatsink

Currently running the Windows 7 RC to see what that's all like.  I like it so far.

It's a solid computer, and I didn't have to break the bank to build it :P

Almost...but not quite.  Uptime is over 3 days now....and that's not bad while 'installing and tweaking' at the same time...;)

I only had a bit of time messing with the RC of Vista....and that was mostly on VMWare .... but for some reason wasn't thrilled with the prospect of using it.... [probably the then lack of drivers....particularly my DSL Modem....puts a REAL dampener on things when you cannot connect to the net].

Then along came the RC of 7 and it's [so far] been pretty darn impressive.....quite a few steps 'newer/better' than XP ...;)

SennKS .... I'd expect that'd come out at about half the price....and probably not a lot different. I was treating myself to something 'good' as it's both tax deductible and a long time since the last new machine....;)

I see you still haven't the mind to buy a AMD setup.

As for myself I'm going Apple...

Koma.( not a mispelling ) ;P . Ive been using both for years.. Really I have not noticed much if any difference between the 2.

The only thing intel sux at is internal graphics cards for laptops.. but for the Cpu's? no discernable difference to me..

Difference? Price. Could have saved himself some money then spurged on a Blu Ray burner.

OK.... improved on the temps..... the Lian Li case has 2 decent sized fans....but I'd only connected the front inlet fan to the 3-way switch, leaving that 'external' rear one to the MoBo connection.  Instead I've now hooked both up to that front 3-level switch so at middle speed the rear [exhaust] is doing a bit more than it was.  Just a minor change but it's knocked a few 'C' of the levels.

Watching the '8 cores' working and you wonder that Intel should provide you with a magnifying glass....so you can see the load in the graphs.....it's eff-all.

Only 'leaky' proggy I've found so far was Explorer Plus .... so switched to Powerdesk Pro 6 .... then upgraded to 7 [though functionality is much the same - it lags a bit if networked drives are open in the tree].

BTW... PDPro uses Stardock's 'Direct skin' process....so it's uniquely skinnable....with or without WB ....;)

That [the burner] 'might' be useful....IF I had a Blu Ray player attached to my TV.

And price?  Yes, you can always buy a Vee Dub Beetle instead of a Merc., and gosh, they're both German so what's the difference?...;)

tossed Powerdesk for Total Commander (after upgrading to 7) and am really happy. Too many bugs, unsupported thumbnails and the company that purchased PowerDesk sucks big time....no replies to emails for support or anything else.

Yup, larrikins have a habit of doing that... coming across like butter wouldn't melt in their mouths. :-"

Jafo I'm confused. That CPU is only quad core. Does the OS list 8 cores?

Hey kona, yes the i7 is a quad but has 2 threads per core.

Good old hyper threading. Thanks. Good looking machine Jafo.

I could say something smart arse like: "Well you could always use the one you keep in the bathroom/toilet." ,but the fact is, they make all this new fangled stuff for the young pups with good eyesight, not us old codgers with failing eyesight and reflexes so slow we miss 'press delete to enter setup' during the extraordinarily fast boot-ups.

Technolergy, ain't it grand!!  Everything's getting faster and smaller... it's either a mere flash before our eyes cos it's so fast, or just a blur cos our specs ain't strong enough to see the detail.

:-" :X ;P

[unless I grab the 64 RC before]....and that won't be till it's out [October-ish]

Well, I guess I won't be selling the old 32bit laptop yet, I got one RC in the works and another three lined up.............anyway, congrats on the new toy!

That is exactly what I mean... as middle-aged spread encroaches and then goes rampant, we slow down as technology get faster and smaller.  Worse still, our eyesight is failing as a result of a mis-spent youth... so everything is getting harder to see to boot.  And speaking of 'boot' (now I've got this Phenom II quad core) my rig boots that fast I have to keep my finger spring loaded on the delete button... or I miss the "enter setup" part and Vista is asking me for my password.

:-" ;P

How times change!  There was a time when 120mph on my Honda was a thrill... hehe, now the fastest thing I wanna be on is my computer chair.

Well...I bit the bullet and have swapped systems.....this new one is now my main machine.....the other will be cleaned, rebuilt and passed on to Terry ....anything's an improvement over that 1.6G desktop case.

Weirdest thing though.....now I'm using the MS wireless mouse and diNovo board.... scrolling the volume in Winamp only works one way.....up....;)

Which when listening to Spinal Tap is the only way it should go... no point them going all the way to 11 if you don't. :-"

BTW: for those who are interested/didn't know, Spinal Tap have a new album out... Back From the Dead.  Joost is doing a feature on Tap... and they're still as wacky as ever.

I've never heard of Spiral Tap. Call me when Korn or Metallica get there new albums out this year.

WHAT??? You've NEVER heard of Spinal Tap?  See if your local video store has a copy of "This Is Spinal Tap" for rent... it is a comedic rockumentary featuring some of their music and worth the watch... there's also a music CD of the same name,, and a later release "Break Like the Wind" featuring Steve vai and other big name musos.  Also check out the link. :)

Dunno about Korn, but Metallica have an more recent album many wouldn't have heard about, "Beatallica"... it's Metallica doing Beatles songs using their own style and lyrics.
