Tough love for Object Desktop

Tough love for Object Desktop

For many years, Object Desktop was synonymous with the phrase “What the next version of Windows might have in it.”

The first Windows version, released way back in 1999, introduced GUI skinning, ZIP files being treated as folders, the Control Center.

In fact, here’s a screenshot of Object Desktop from 1999.

image
Object Desktop in 1999

Those features we take for granted now in Windows.  GUI skinning? Windows XP provided that.  ZIP files as folders, old hat now.  A “Sidebar”? Windows Vista users know something about that.  Features like gadgets and widgets and icon changing and other such things were also part of what made Object Desktop so forward thinking.

Object Desktop in 2009

Object Desktop became extremely popular and its users and Stardock became invested in the feature set that made it so popular.  The problem is that Windows itself has moved on and Object Desktop has to move on too.  That means it’s time for some tough love.

On October 5, 2009, after a nearly 3 year absence, I have returned to being in charge of Object Desktop again.  Being away from the desktop enhancements area has allowed me to take a fresh look at the state of the art in Windows tech, the “Skinning community”, and so forth.  And I must say, there’s a lot of work needed here.

Decisions

After looking at things, I’ve come to the conclusion that we need to make some pretty big changes.

#1 Our focus will be power users. NOT casual users.  For the past 3 years, things like MyColors have focused on casual users. The idea is very sound and I was an early supporter of the concept of MyColors – grow beyond power users into the much larger base of casual users.

The problem is that casual users barely do more than change their wallpaper and they’re not likely to pay $50 (let alone $70 for “ultimate”) to spice up their desktop.

#2 Make Windows better. Object Desktop was never supposed to become a cosmetic product. The idea was that Object Desktop fixes the things in Windows. Windows was not competitive compared to say the Mac or even Linux visually and Object Desktop helped solve that.  But Windows Vista and Windows 7 look pretty good. Our objective should be to focus on making Windows better overall and there’s plenty of work there.

#3 Eliminate “Ultimate”.  Breaking Object Desktop into Standard and Ultimate editions was a mistake. It should be Object Desktop. Period. So people who have Object Desktop Ultimate will get their access to it extended and we will return to a single version with the launch of Object Desktop 2010.

#4 Content is NOT king. A lot of time, energy, and money was spend making suites and themes these past 3 years.  While many users like the themes, many of them don’t like it coming via MyColors.  MyColors is going to be moved to our enterprise group for license and distribution through our OEM partners.  Mixing and matching the two is not a good idea in my view.  Instead, content will be provided as .suite files that users can then manipulate however they want in Theme Manager.

#5 Sunset programs. There are many programs that we’re going to have to sunset.  What I mean is that new users of Object Desktop won’t get them. People who have Object Desktop already will continue to be able to download them but they won’t be getting updates.  RightClick, Virtual Desktops and ObjectBar will make their way into the sunset.  Others will start to follow soon.

Basically, if a program doesn’t work on Windows 7, 64-bit within the next month, it’ll be sunsetted.  That doesn’t mean that that type of program will go away.  We’ve already started putting together a design document for a replacement for RightClick that we think is a lot better.  We have new ideas for virtual desktops that can make use of WPF and other newer techs.

Now, I know many people reading this will be horrified at some of this.  The focus going forward is going to be Windows 7.  That doesn’t mean users of Windows XP are going to be dropped. They’re not.  But we are going to need to start concentrating our resources on a single platform and that platform is going to be Windows 7.

As a reminder of what kinds of cool stuff we were able to do when we could focus on a single OS:

Object Desktop in 2002 with “Toon-XP” suite applied

My objective for the next 6 months is to make sure Object Desktop becomes synonymous with cutting edge technology again.  And do that, we will need to make some tough choices and focus our efforts onto doing cool stuff that hasn’t been done before that make using Windows better.

Why do I suddenly feel the urge to whisper under my breath, "yes-we-can"?
End of quote
I would highly suggest resisting that urge considering the author of this post and his political persuasion.
I'm not going to say "I told you so" here. It serves no purpose, but I can't help but believe that if the economy turns around and goes back into the greedy feeding frenzy that existed when My Colors was created - Stardock would re-turn their back on the collective "power users" once again. This is a sound judgement by Stardock, based on the recent economic past and current economic outlook. Nothing more. Nobody should take any comfort in the focus being pointed *back* at the "power user". Now that Windows 7 will be the focus, and the new users will get (apparently) less toys than the longer time users, I fully expect less all around. Less for them means less for the rest of us as the money dries up. Not that the "power users" were getting anything lately either. Make the customer expect less in the short term while *almost* promising more in the long term - yet delivering far short of either expectation. That seems to be the way things work these days. That is what I expect from this point forward. Think....the commercial that tries to make the masses believe that "less is the new more". Yeah - sure. Whatever. I log into Impulse rarely anymore. I just did as I wrote this. There is a (supposed) update for WindowBlinds. Why do I say "supposed"? Well that would be because there is no longer a version history available in Impulse. So is it an update? I doubt it. It doesn't matter anyways. It's been a long time between updates and now we all reap the rewards of false promises. (Like the RightClick update that was promised months ago - remember that one?)Now RightClick is going bye-bye. Big surprise. Oh, I forgot about the lengthy Impulse updates. You know, the ones that require you to reboot but give you nothing in return ---> other than ads for games and other garbage that you "the power user" could care less about. As far as the whole "Ultimate" thing being a mistake..... wow - talk about your epic epiphanies! It's not like there was any history to draw from, like say Microsoft. I'm still looking for investors for my "New" Coke II idea. Any takers? No, the market has dried up. Now the objective is to try and get whatever money is possible from the hard core users that Stardock long since turned its back on. I don't use anything but ObjectDock anymore. I'm an ObjectDesktop Ultimate subscriber through June 2010. I won't be re-upping. What's the point? Even OD causes me problems and hasn't been updated forever. Nice. But Stardock is going to focus on people like me right? Give me a friggin' break. Congrats Stardock. You and your right wing, greedy, short sighted business plan is now fully reaping its rewards. You have nobody to blame but yourselves. Now you want to milk as much as you can before you drop off of the map - am I far off here? I bet a year or two from now I will be able to brag that I was spot on - just as I could brag about being spot on about my predictions from a year ago. It's sad what pure political ideology, pure greed, and pure narcissism gets people. Unfortunately we now get to share in it. Enjoy this bitter pill like you do your sub-prime mortgage. Like you do the groceries that cost you at least twice as much as they did. As you do your gas that is still trying to rape you like it did not long ago. Like so many things. Frogboy and his posse offer history. Nothing more. Do you want some - Mr. Power User? LAME post, LAME AGENDA You are fooling very few by now.

A happycamper?  Now that's an oxymoron, to say the least.

In any event, it's a blatant contradiction of terms.

With so many negative thoughts, happycamper88, you DEFINITELY need a new nick

Maybe grizzleguts88 would be more fitting? ;P

I suspect happycamper may find himself without posting ability pretty soon given his other thread.

I should point out that the WindowBlinds update IS a WindowBlinds update.  In fact there have been many updates of WindowBlinds and Deskscapes over the past few months. (WB7 and Deskscapes 3 betas)

As for Impulse needing reboots, an update of the impulse client should not require a reboot.  Reboots would be required for updating WindowBlinds or Deskscapes due to locked files.

I have always like the .suites that I could get after paying, year after year for my object desktop subscription. Unfortunately, the development of suites has slowed to a crawl in my estimation. I thought this was the way forward to make Windows how I liked. Perhaps I'd feel differently if I'd bought Vista but I didn't and stuck with XP instead. Now, coming into Windows 7 (how'd they ever arrive at that number? It's like version 11 or somethin'.) I will buy this and hope that my old XP computer will still be able to use Object Desktop Suites and that I'll have expanded capabilities and customization of my new computers in Windows 7. I hope to see, shortly after Thanksgiving, something new crop up to justify a financial decision by me to continue subscribing to Object Desktop. But at this point, without actual further benefits such as new .suites that will work in XP and greater, better features I can utilize in Windows 7 from Object Desktop, I question whether I will do so, especially considering numerous financial constraints. I know that's not enough time but I want to get more for my money, not continually less as I feel OD has provided over the last few years. I am grateful for the MyColors suites provided "free" for my OD subscription but they did not include all the neat feature I was able to get from previous .suites. I believe you understand this. Correct this, soon, and all will be well. Thank you.

gmknobl, suites are still being developed, and we are changing our focus back to providing .suites for OD customers instead of the MyColors themes.  However, all of the premium themes that you got with OD are also available as .suites.  Just do a serial number look-up:  www.stardock.com/support and it will email you two download links.  the first is MyColors, the second is a .suite file to use with ThemeManager.

All our .suites will continue to be developed for XP, Vista and now Win7.

Great stuff Frogboy - I was happy to see the direction you want to head in. A few things- I would hope that for each app retired, one is added. One easy way to do this is to begin to bundle two apps that are now separate, but are perfect compliments to all OD programs - Objectdock can Cursor FX (pro versions). I also agree with reply #5 -
Couple things I'd like to see: Sidebar replacement thing for Win 7. As far as I'm concerned, it's like Fences for widgets. Stack textures/filters in Windowblinds and Deskscapes. You can produce some pretty interesting results already.
End of quote
One more thing - one app that needs updating to 64 bit and Windows 7 is WindowFX. Animation and Visual Effects have and will continue to evolve with the OS and WindowFX can lead the way with this. Thanks!

I'm actually happy with this direction.  I prefer paying for capability (WindowBlinds) over content (MyColors).  Plus, MyColors and WB were and either/or proposition: I couldn't use a MyColors theme and then tweak it.

Sad to see ObjectBar going away, but ObjectDock performs most of the same functions, and graphically things are moving to widgets, gadgets, and virtual windows (Fences).

THAT was why I felt like saying "Yes we can" -- it's a subtle political metaphor, (a mantra chanted by the masses when great things were promised to them, but the promises were empty, and now the reality is we're all back to the same old shit).  As the saying goes --

Blessed are those who expect nothing, for they shall not be disappointed.

Look, I LOVE Windowblinds, and I enjoy being part of the community here and I don't want to be banned, but in the short time I have been part of this community, and especially this last year, we have seen a lot of "look at what the cool future holds" and sat around waiting, and waiting, and waiting for the "new" to become the norm, and like a fat girl being stood up for the prom, we have been left waiting for nothing.  "Tough love" for OD?  For the past year there has been NO love for OD.  Fool me once, shame on me, right?  We'll I'm not falling for this promise again.  If something new and beautiful materializes, I'll enjoy it when it happens, but until that day, I'm not getting my hopes up.

I've said in other posts on this forum that Stardock really has too many balls in the air when it comes to these apps. It's been painfully obvious that they've lacked the manpower to manage all the stuff they got going. Putting the focus on the most important things and bring them up to standard is the only way to go.

Either this works out or we'll see the entire OD suite falling into oblivion... There's no trickery here.

moving forward is always good..i wouldnt mind seeing TOONS suite updated though :X

That's kind of my feeling too.

That's why I'm coming in and basically "killing darlings".  There's been a lot of stuff fooled around with for too long that hasn't gone out the door or gotten finished because the scope has been endlessly extended to the point that it never gets done.

In the next 60 days, you're going to see a LOT of stuff released starting tomorrow all because things that just are pie in the sky are getting dropped (stuff most people are totally unaware of).

See https://forums.wincustomize.com/366192 to get a taste of what we can do in a couple of days with some focus.
