Gameplay question for someone considering the game

Hey there all,

I am an avid GalCiv player, and I have come across sins--which looks very cool.  But before I commit, I have one thing holding me back.  I am a _firm_ believer in turn-based strategy, and so when I read that sins is a RTS, I balked.  HOWEVER, some RTS can essentially become turn-based for all intensive purposes--I am thinking the old Star Wars: Rebellion and the Europa Universalis games.  Does sins have a similar game play mechanism, whereby you can pause the real-time, make some crack decisions, and then pick up where you left off?

Thanks for the info guys!

As far as I know, you can pause in any RTS, including Sins. I've done that multiple times back when I was really bad at the game, so yes, you can. I don't recommend doing that when you're playing with others though.

Unless you're playing multiplayer, you can pause whenever you like.  In multiplayer, each player gets ten time outs, but this will annoy other players.

Sins is very much a RTS that draws heavy inspiration from TBS, but it's still a RTS at its core.  It certainly isn't the "twitch reflex tactics" type exemplified by Starcraft, but it's still a RTS first.

Sins is much slower than normal RTS games and isn't a clickfest.  Why not see if you can find the Demo and try it out?

RTS games ... clickfest
End of quote

The use of these terms in the same sentence is a personal pet peeve of mine... but I'm all ranted out today.

Suffice to say that there isn't a significant reflex-factor in Sins.  You still have to manage your empire and fleets in a timely manner, as in any other RTS, but the time constraits are a little more lax.

Sins is the first rts game I have every played...

I started with turn-based stragegy games (alpha centauri, civ 3) and then at some point started with the total war games (shogun: total war)...over time I moved to more recent turn based (civ 4, galciv II) and total war games (rome and medieval II)...

Like you, I was very hesitant to buy sins...

But I did...

And I am damn glad I did too...

Coming from turn-based games, sins at first was very different and I had to change how I play...RTS games are about time-management and intuition while TBS games are more about deep-thinking...nevertheless I adapted and Sins is my favorite game...

If you happen to know someone that own sins, try and play their game...of course, if you do find out you like it, please buy the game, don't just use their impulse account...

I turned 6 of my friends onto sins by letting them play my game...all 6 of them fell in love with it and purchased it on their own (another reason why DRM doesn't help make more money)...if you can actually sit down and play it (even if its just the demo), I have a strong feeling you will like it...

I'd say that liking the space genre is more important than liking RTS...I came from GalCiv II as well, and I very much like both even though they are very different...

Ditto on what Seleucieia said. If you want you can even slow everything down I believe as well in the settings so it can be even 'more' turn based. That's how I started playing and now I play on normal speed.

We borrowed the game discs from one friend and my three friends tried it out. Played the snot out of it for a month and then all purchased the 'Collector's Edition' of the game which game with music cd, poster, etc. We all now have all the expansions and play at least twice a month.

It is well worth the purchase, especially the expansions.
