Smurfs

Smurfs

I bought Sins Trinity a few days ago, and of course started off by playing a couple of single player games. Then I figured it was time to try out the online play. I was immediately surprised by how few people were online playing, but soon realized why. I've never played a game with such a rude community. It was nearly impossible to get into a game because people will actually kick you for having never played before, calling you a "smurf". I wasn't sure what that was, so I looked it up, but apparently knowing what a smurf is makes people even more certain that you are one.

Eventually I did get into a game, against a smurf... He was the most helpful, and generally nice player I talked to. I got beaten pretty badly, but learned a lot, and he gave me some good tips.

What I would like to know is this: why is there this attitude against smurfs? Why do people even care if a good player creates a new name? To be honest, I think it is the rest of the players, not the smurfs that are destroying this game. It's a shame, because it has a huge potential to be a great online multiplayer game.

Oh no worries. I am just commenting that smurfs / alts are part of any online game. The differences are 1) the server populations and 2) getting booted from the game. Also that sometimes the 'cures' can be worse than the original problem.

As far as playing online I need to find out why my connection to ICO is so unstable. I also need more practice playing at faster speeds. While I usually play at 2x rate sometimes I need to slow down to 1x (especially at the start). I'll see what I can do. Online play is always a different experience than single player. Once I started playing Starcraft online back in the day I couldn't stand or play Starcraft single player campaigns ever again (let alone the craptastic Brood War).

On another note, I am curious in the past did people use ventrilo when they played Sins online? I am sure it doesn't apply now with the low server pops but I was wondering about back in the day.

Groups of friends will use voice comm sometimes, but I doubt that most players do.  I don't have any advice for an unstable connection other than to set up port forwarding which may or may not make any difference for Sins.  It's possible that there's just a bad router between you and the ICO server, and there's probably nothing you could do about that.

Its odd because in other online games like WoW (granted that was a few years ago) I never had any issues (same domicile, same provider). So yeah I am befuddled.
