Win by alliance with all five races!

Today I had my most amusing win ever. I allied with all five races for a political victory. Here's the saved game, for anybody who cares:

i once did it after i set everyone but the yor to good and then gave the yor a higher (but not too high) ai.

once they were dead it was easy to bribe for alliance.

I did this too, on Crippling, just to end the game faster because it was obvious I had won at this point.

Challenging, I think. Whatever it is when they're all set to Intelligent. Standard race settings... which means I was simultaneously allied with the angelic Altarians and demonic Drengin, and everybody in between. Maybe it's not as hard to do that as I thought, but it's the first time I have done it, and I thought it was cool.

I had a fun game with all 5 races set to Pure Good/Intelligent. I went pure evil immediately, and pulled off a alliance victory, with every race allied with every other races. Not a single war was ever fought between any of the major races. The best part, was when the fundimentalists popped up in the middle of the game. Thankfully, they only grabbed 3-4 of my systems, and I was able to retake them pretty fast.

Gonna have to try it again on Masocistic some day.

End of quote

I'm really insterested on how that was possible.

While it's possible to do alignment rebounds to snag one or two empires in a permanent alliance, it's quite a feat to nail all five without such tactics.

After seeing this thread, I though I might try this just for fun (tiny map, normal difficulty). The Altarians and Torians were wiped out too quickly but when I obtained the Alliance tech I allied with the three remaining civs and both minors.

I had trade routes only with the minors but I gave tech (eg.including valuable ones such as shields and trade) as gifts to everyone every now and again. I did not have to give many gifts, just every now and again. They mostly hated one another so tended to open a trade route with me. I had no wars. All 3 remaining majors and 1 minor were already "close" so I could immediately ally with them for free (it cost me some tech to get the majors to make peace with one another though). The other minor had to be given techs and trade goods to ally with me.

It was a very quick game. :)

Did it take a lot of little gifts, a lot of large gifts, a lot of medium gifts, or just a few massive gifts? Cuz sometimes its maddening how the AI won't ally with me no matter what I do, even if I give it the coveted Corvette tech >_<.

You can only raise relations once per turn to any given race. So only the first set of stuff you send them that turn will improve relations. Also how well they recieve your gift is effected by how long it has been since you last gave them a gift. So giving gifts turn after turn with no break in between, doesn't help much at all.

Trade routes with the race you are trying to ally with help alot also. They can really make the difference getting from friendly to close. I also usually have a high diplomacy skill in my games, and diplomatic translators.
