I just noticed: You easily have 50 techs researched by the time you deploy the 8th civic research station, making the 50 tech requirement quite pointless. Or is this just me?
You can build 8 civic stations without having 50 research subjects completed, or any research, even.
Therefore, the 50 tech buildup isn't pointless, it's just a big prerequisite for the victory research.
Still, 50 research items seems - EASY. Too easy. Of course, there is the insane cost.
I think its more to keep people from building 8 civic labs ASAP. Not that it would be a viable strategy anyways, but its a nice safeguard. As it is I think its harder to get a research victory over any of the other conditions save perhaps the capital victory if you're playing against a good player.
