Going by the minimum required specs for Ram your just scraping it mate you might want to up it I had to buy a entirely new computer to play GC3 I could tell you the specs but I don't want to see a grown man cry. :-"

Best bet is message the devs or ask one of the moderators to see if you'll have enough as Beta 6 patch tomorrow is going to optimise the game a lot and paul said they are going to be forever optimising it.

The game should be better by release, however, with those system specs the larger map sizes may not run the best as 6gb memory is preferred.  You may look at upgrading that.  The crashes I'm hoping is fixed with beta 6 :)

Edit: Echillion just beat my post :P

i dont like larger maps .. games tend to be long and boring :D especially when you conquer like half of galaxy :D  well i hope that they will optimize the game so i can play small maps :D .. in other way game looks fucking great.. i played early game , but it looks nice.. i like ideas and changes

I have 8 gigs of ram and it's not enough, SD should update their min. requirements. Sometimes it's slow on medium maps. GalCiv3 uses around 3+ gigs of ram in the task manager. Windows and programs uses 2 gigs of my ram, galciv3 uses around 3 gigs, that's only 5 gigs of rams being used. The other 3 gigs of ram should say available in "Performance" in task manager, but it doesn't seem to use them. In "Performance" in "Memory" it shows my computer is using 7/8 gigs of ram. Galvic3 is caching to my hard drive instead of ram.

With 4GB of RAM my laptop (thankfully is not my only gaming rig) can only run tiny maps. Although, my laptop has an integrated video card which may be also what is cutting into this number.

I can tell you 4 gigs is NOT enough. I had 8 gigs and stuttered on HUGE. I changed to 16 and left my page file ON, and set to 24 gigs. I run insane maps smoothly now. Get more ram, its cheap enough and all your applications will benefit, not just GC III.

1/6th? So it's going to go from using 4GB on huge maps to less than a GB?

I assume he meant 1/6th from Beta 5, not Beta 5 Patch 3 (though if it is the latter, all the better). Still, it's a significant difference.

i used 4 gigs up until just recently (upgraded just about everything and havent had a chance to play on it decided to wait till B6) i could play up to immense maps and would usually run out of memory about 6 times in the first 100 turns after that it would become stable for another 100 or so turns (all in one sitting) and then become pretty much unplayable

You only have a 24hr wait lads and lasses lets see what Beta 6 delivers before ripping apart your comps

According to the most recent post from brad, insane maps are down to using 2-3 GB of memory :) that is way down from 8-9 GB that beta 5 patch 3 was using...

I didn't really notice to be honest as I have double that amount of ram...oops! let the cat out of the bag! lol

In 5.3 I got extremely laggy gameplay after ca. 100-150 turns on large and huge maps. It hardly ever crashed though. That was with 6GB RAM that are "recommended" in the specs sticky.

It became so bad that I invested some bucks to go up to 8GB. Only 2GB more made really a huge difference.

If b6 improves/reduces RAM usage as anounced, I might be even able to play bigger maps :)

I have 16 myself, with the game using so much I was thinking of upgrading that to 32 before I really wanted to :)
