Thoughts on improvement to replays and observer mode.
The current setup is very basic. It shows everything that is happening on the screen and nothing else. Its pretty poor when you take into account the need to showcase whats going on, particularly when casting games for others enjoyment.
Beyond basic gameplay. Having a product that works as an entertaining spectators sport is important. But most game companies completely ignore it. (ie seriously how many years was it until CS was mildly worthwhile to spectate?)
Suggestions.
1
Any Orbital ability. Massively pings the map.
Benefits: Observers/streamers can actually follow events / battles / sneaky gameplay, and show them to viewers. This makes it interesting, while also giving streamers a chance to talk about something - like the tactical reasoning behind whats going on.
Reasoning: There have been so many games i'm watching where stuff happens and its not shown. Which is both boring and doesn't indicate actual events.
2
Any Orbital ability. Shows drop down box on the side of screen (times out after 10 seconds) that you can click on to take you to the event, with the name of the event on it.
Benefit: Same as above. But allows obs to quickly move to it, and allows users to see events happening.
3
Recording of screen location, and mouse clicks of users.
So you can go into FPV mode for the player while obsing. This might cause bandwidth / data issues though. Very similar to starcraft where they start watching from the players view.
Benefit: Can switch over to watch what players are actually doing, which adds another talking point and is interesting.
