Radeon 8500 - very annoying

Hi! I have a problem - when I play some games (not all, maybe 50% of all) the completely lock and everything I can do is to switch power off. I have Ati Radeon 8500 gpu (now old but earlier it was a monster). I know that the videocard is the cause of hang-up's. I've tried to change memory, HDD etc. (even the soundcard) but It hangs and hangs. It hangs very easy on C and C: Generals and Moto GP. Anyone will suggest something?

Are you using the latest drivers? They would be the CATALYST RADEON 3.4. Make sure you are using the drivers best suited for your OS. You may also want to read the Release Notes of each of the games to see if there are known issues. You could try http://westwood.ea.com/ for information on C&C games. I'm not sure who released Moto GP.

Have you checked your cpu temperature? C&C Generals is a graphics hog and could well be running your cpu flat out causing overheating. Check the bios to see if you have a cpu temp overheat cut-out in operation, that can stop the pc running. If the temp is running hot you'll need a bigger heatsink/fan.

Thanks, Tryzub. I am using the latest drivers and everything. And it happens in almost any game, in some games more, in some games less. The only thing I can play normally are 2D games.

Fuzzy Logic, I have already one really big (noisy too) cpu cooler, which spins 8000rpm. My cpu temperature normally is 35-45 celsium (intel pentium IV 1.7Ghz)... I just keep thinking that it is one really odd software problem.

You mention changing memory - not having memory in slot 1 can cause problems. Just a thought.

here's an old, but good write up on the 8500 http://www.guru3d.com/review/ati/radeon8500/ ...you might want to look at your DirectX version. I've read that 9.0 can play havoc with games using a card that doesn't support it
