When talking 'specials' or actual modified-for-drags vehicles you'll get 4 second passes, etc....but they are not road-going passenger vehicles to be bought off-the-shelf.

yes, very true. hell my car can do a quarter in about 5 hours... it is pretty slow but I love the car.

Rotaries are quite clever engineering....but originally their seals were a problem [life span in the minutes - almost]...and contemporary turbos were pretty horrid as well....but if you really wanted some serious 'grunt' you could always get a Pratt and Whitney gas turbine and chuck it into your Corvette [as one guy did....though he detuned it to 700 shp [shaft horse power]]...

Better than what?....no, a V8 is just a motor....where it seems that v10s and v12s give better performances in Formula One, where, for example, consistent reliable outputs could be 900hp sustainable over a two hour race duration...from 1500cc...though in those days the Turbos were toast if the car expired.....so many caught fire if they crashed/broke down...

The Arizona (U.S.) Highway Patrol came upon a pile of smoldering metal imbedded into the side of a cliff rising above the road, at the apex of a curve.

The wreckage resembled the site of an airplane crash, but it was a car. The type of car was unidentifiable at the scene.

The boys in the lab finally figured out what it was, and what had happened.

It seems that a guy had somehow got hold of a JATO unit, (Jet Assisted Take Off, actually a solid-fuel rocket) that is used to give heavy military transport planes an extra `push' for taking off from short airfields. He had driven his Chevy Impala out into the desert, and found a long, straight stretch of road. Then he attached the JATO unit to his car, jumped in, got up some speed, and fired off the JATO!!

Best as they could determine, he was doing somewhere between 250 and 300 mph (350-420kph) when he came to that curve....

The brakes were completely burned away, apparently from trying to slow the car.

NOTE: Solid-fuel rockets don't have an 'off'... once started, they burn at full thrust 'till the fuel is all gone.

The fastest rotary's land speed is 242 mph by Racing Beat ( www.racingbeat.com ). The fastet 1/4 mile is by flaco racing at 6.9 sec. In puerto rico there are many 7-9 sec rotaries. Here in this town I know of 2 11 sec rotaries. In australia and new zealand 10 and 11 sec roataries are a way of life. 800 hp rotaries do exist, there are many. There are 1000 hp 4 rotors. The mazda 787b won overall at LeMans. the rotary is one of the most technologically advanced engines around. Even GM couldn't figure it out, then again they haven't made a truely new v-8 in 50 years. The fact that a 1.3 engine can race along side V-8 scares the NHRA so much that they won't let them into the same class.

There are no rotaries in snowmobiles. Those are rotax engines... get your facts straight.

Oh yeah on the "if you are american, buy american" most japanese cars are made here in america. ALL hondas sold here are made in tenesee. Again get your facts straight.

Stock camaros, firebirds, mustangs, corvettes are only 13-14 sec cars, not very impressive when a stock turbo rotary does a 14 sec 1/4. Sure a hennesy this and a lingenfelter that can go faster, but they are not truely stock.

The Racing Beat RX-7 is shown in the "Back In Black" paint scheme after an ill-fated record attempt in 1992. Note the addition of the larger rear spoiler and "roof rails" on this car. Although it was hoped this car would travel close to 300 MPH, poor weather and salt conditions kept the the top speed to a mere 242 MPH. This 20b Powered FC is fully street engineered, but is just as happy on the track. It runs a Guru Dogbox and the 20b was recently rebuilt by Guru and puts out a healthy 500rwHp.

Still trying to find the old mag clipping about the 70's 'vette with the 'rotary' engine....actually a Pratt & Whitney [J52 I think]....with the 12" x 4" twin exhaust ducts.....and a 'slow' idle of 30,000rpm...

umm, yeah the workers in those factories are american. do you think they import workers to america for it? So the ceo is in japan, and he makes money woopity doo! The ceo's for american cars (which are made in canada and mexico by the way)don't share thier money with you or anyone else so what does it matter if they or a person in japan make the money.
