Norton Personal firewall will make your ip and its ports invisible to an ip scan, and block entry to anything unless you explicityly allow it.
supposeilvey SP2 will have such options available, as well.

Your ISP has your IP, so you can't hide it from everyone. Depends what you want to do and why what methods to use. Not all are safe, like the use of open proxies. And not all anonymyzing services are that good or free. If you want to hide from "hackers" because you've been scared by hype, just use a firewall.
I'm not aware that ZA can block your IP. There's a couple settings relating to concealing the IP or a portion of it when communicating with ZoneLabs via the ZA interface. But it doesn't hide your IP on the internet. A spoofed IP outbound would receive no returning communication from websites, so you couldn't surf on the net. That's why people have to use anonymizers (remote proxies) as a go-between between your IP and the sites you visit.

besides that you can run through an encrypted portal and even your ISP can not tell what or where your doing it...

i got real hyped up once when i saw a graphic in someone's sig showing me what my IP addie was
still tryin to figure how it did that. i know its happening on the client side- and it is in fact showing only my local ip addie- but.. still wonderin' how.

if you're checking an ftp log or even a visits log, of course you'll get their ip's.
the java, i assumed as much.

eer.. ack. forgot to mention: at least with certain software, in my case norton, if you found someone's addie say in one of those server logs, and tried to connect to it, it would simply block you out of the common ports.
if someone really want's to get in, they'll get in. but common firewall software tries to keep out the usual riff raf and spywear bull.

Another great way to avoid the fact that people see your IP: Pull the little square shaped plug on the back of your computer.
