For information only! As of today, Dell has STOPPED using 256MB DDR ATI Radeon 9800 XT Graphics Card (320-2566)in their computers. For those who purchased a Dell w/this specific Graphics Card, just make a mental note in the event you experience any problem. Dell is not wanting to make comments about "why" they have discontinued this part, and are contacting customers (computers being presently built) informing them of the situation. Hope this is of help to those who are using 256MB DDR ATI Radeon 9800 XT Graphics Card (320-2566).

Not sure on that Terry, but anything is possible. Dell will continue (for the time being that is) selling the 128MB, but "maybe" they found a bug in the 256 MB.

All I see is the ATI overview blurb for the 9800 series cards.

Is there anything specific about the Dell problems mentioned there? It's not obvious if so...

Knowing this I wouldn't be surprised if its some rumour...

There so many people out there who has that card (256MB ver), if there was any problem they would have been out ages ago. As the card was released October/November.

Im just happy Nvidia and Ati coming out with new cards that way prices fall down off other cards

Did you see the dual pci express Nvidia Alienware machine? 2 cards work half and half on the screen , thats insane... expensive... ahhh can only dream lol

from what i hear daily about the way dell builds their computers, albeit cheap and workable for the every day user, i'm betting the problem is an inability of dell's equipment to handle the card, and not a defect in the card. 256 meg is top of the line no matter how you look at it.. those machines aren't engineered for that. could be a pipe problem.

No there are a few 512 meg monstors out there. Made for CAD work I believe.

Recent orders on the build-line were nixed! Representatives contacted all customers (on the build-line) and let them know that the 256MB DDR ATI Radeon 9800 XT Graphics Card (320-2566) was no longer available. So, they had to make another choice, or just cancel. Either way, their order was cancelled, and for those who wished/desired to proceed with a second choice...another order was put into action.

On another note, and answering kona0197, Regarding X800 cards:

According to specifications on the Dimension 8300 found here:

The X800 is compatible with the units AGP slot but the power supply should be larger, recommended is 300W.

Windows MCE would not be supported. If you are going to use Windows XP Home or Professional there are drivers available and the card is compatible.

kona, what i meant was it's not standard. you have to go out of your way to get a card at that level. technology is moving fast but not even now are 256meg cards common amoung non-gamers or thrill-seekers.
