The Prancing Pony

The welcome sight of a tavern greeted the weary traveler as he moved within distance of the town. Having traveled for many days, he longed for a cool mug of ale to slake his road-thirst.

As he approached the inn, he could see a sign of a fat pony rearing up on its hindlegs. The letters, THE PRANCING PONY, was painted in white.

The common room was large and rowdy. A bald and overweight innkeeper stood bent over the counter, whispering the latest gossip into the ears of a patron. On the benches were various folks, the local drunks for most part, but in corners of the taverns, he noticed there were groups drinking by themselves.

Setting himself down, the traveler handed a couple of coppers over to one of the bar wrenches for ale.

“Welcome to the Pony.” The traveler was mildly surprised to find a sprightly old man next to him, holding his gaze with keen eyes that belittled his obvious antiquity.

“Thank you, and whom do I have the pleasure of addressing?”

“Folks around here call me Ray and I do enjoy meeting up with newcomers to see if there is any assistance I could render.”

“That would be great, Ray. I would love to learn about the people who reside in these parts.”

“Ah, that’s a frequently asked question and one I’m well qualified to answer. There are a couple of factions here in Meta that you will want to watch out for.

The Pirates are currently dominant. Not the most refined of speakers but they are a jovial bunch, with a particular weakness for good drinks.

The Diplomats hold power in the Courts. Their courtiers are many but they don’t really mix with us common folks.

The Farmers are our working class. Hardworking and honest, they are however on occasion given over to overly elaborate festivals and celebrations.

The Galahs are a group of seafarers. They are also good trainers of livestock.

The Warlords are our warrior class. Their love for long campaigns leaves them frequently out of town.

The Spiders monopolise our merchant guilds. They are by far the most invertebrate bunch of traders you will ever see.

Far to the north, the Undead holds a death grip over the wastelands. I would caution you against traveling down that road.

There are many other smaller factions around, but I leave the details of those to Barley our bartender.

One of our tavern regulars, Gerakken the Spymaster, is also in the know with regards to many of the factions. So do buy him a drink if you want to find out more.”

“Thanks for the insights, Ray. But how about yourself, which faction do you belong to?”

Smiling to himself, the old man stood.

“Come round the Fellowship Halls tomorrow morning and I’ll show you around.”

I see that the MWC is now #1. Congrads to them. Dunno if they have a chat thread here or not. I'm glad to see people not taking this so personally and defensively any more. Moving forward...

Strewth...how are all the characters going to get a run here? Ah well:
Name: Wild Wombat
Race: Wombat
Class: Beastmaster Bard (!)
Reason for joining: Save the universe (preferably before teatime)
No worries, Wombat. It's actually easier than you think. I've inserted Kit, IceMole, Idleprocess and Gibbie all at the last momemt.

I'm still not very clear about the powers of the Freedom Fighters, else those powers would sure come in handy against the Undead.

Just contributed another 3-4k to the Fellowship cause.

Our noses are ahead again but the Pirates and the Farmers are right behind chasing us with their cutlasses and pitchforks.

The Zombie Master was in pain. The energies emitted from the blinding pillar of light that rose out of the Fellowship Halls cut deep within his infernal organs, afflicting him with a blistering agony.

“Lord Technican, I have returned. ” A shimmering form appeared before the Zombie Master within his command tent, sited on a small knoll overlooking the village of Bree.

“Conwraith, you have failed in the mission. I sense that the pirates still live within the Halls.”

“Master, I have tried to subvert them as you had commanded. Their evilness would indeed have made them powerful undead. They may have slipped from my grasp for now but my unholy venom resides in one of them. That one may still be converted to our cause.”

The flaps of the tent parted. The grinning skeletal face of Vinashko came into sight. The skeleton mage had been assigned by the Lich King to advise Lord Technican in this campaign.

“Report Vinashko. Are our forces ready to attack the Fellowship Halls?”

“Lord Technican, cythknight would lead the vanguard. His force of Death Knights would cut down the perimeter defenders and seal the Halls off before our main body invades.”

“Excellent. The accursed Fellowship must be destroyed before they grow in power.”

"He resists my healing", CariElf's pale blue eyes were framed in sorrow as KitWarrior's weakened body thrashed on the hay bed. Delirious with pain, KitWarrior struggled against the undead assimilation.

"I don't wanna die!"
"Noooo... It's too bright! The light. Arghh..."

"He will soon become part of the Undead if he continues to resist."

Michael looked over at CariElf with concern.

"Shall I end his life now before he enters into a state of eternal wretchedness?" Michael's fingers rested quickly on his enchanted dagger, a gift from the elves at Rivendell.

"No! It is not the time. There is another way..."

What's the deal with this scoring???
End of quote

It came out just right. Sum of your two games = 18,336. Divided by the square root of two = 1.414. 18,336/1.414 = 12,966.

What did you expect? A pure sum of scores?

Congratulations to anyone who deserves congratulations at this point in time. I hope you know who you are, because I certainly don't, what with all the rank shifting going on.

Barry: Not sure if you know this already. For your total score, Stardock adds your scores and divides by the square root of the number of submissions (and then has some sort of aging algorithm added as well which probably doesn't affect you). So when you went from 1 to 2 games you went from dividing by 1 (square root of 1 submission) to dividing your total by about 1.4 (square root of two submissions).

On the other hand, if when you said "what's the deal with this scoring" you really meant "why did Stardock pick such a strange system," then I really don't have a clue.

Posted the same time as vincible. See his post for the scoring details.

Good job with the Normal win though. You are moving through the difficulty levels quickly.

Stardock chose this system so it does not overly reward the gamer who just piles the games on. But it has its problems in that it penalises losses and low scores.

Many nights later...

Darkness consumed the candlelit booth. The ruckus that was the Prancing Pony did not disturb the cloaked figure. He sat quietly, mesmerized by the fire's dance. A wench came to the table to take the empty steins.

"Anotha?" She asked in a husky voice.

"Rum. With strawberries," was his reply.

She nearly laughed, but was caught by his glare. She could see his face better now and was bold enough to ask, "Aren't you Ki..."

"Grog, woman!" His pale eyes seemed to fade further. The wench turned and quickly made her way back to the bar.

An infinite number of thoughts collided in the pirate's mind, yet he sat motionless. Panic nearly overtook him before he secured his sanity on a single question: why strawberries? The darkness visited him once more.

Grog arrived at his table. Slowly, he emptied his steins. It was with considerable effort that he managed to fill the void with distant memories. There was a task with IceMole to capture a dark elf. He could not remember what transpired, but a tinge of pain from his noggin served as clue. The pounding of galloping horses filled his ears. Figures of death lunged towards him. These could not be memories. Such things existed only in nightmares. And yet...

The light of the candle before him both narrowed and intensified. Through the light he saw her face again - an angel that healed the wounds of his body. She reached towards his heart to heal his soul, but the pirate stopped her. Not even an angel would he allow to touch his heart.

He concentrated, narrowed his eyes, clenched his fists. He could remember nothing more prior to walking into the Prancing Pony. Thoughts were useless. The pirate released his mind and stepped onto the path of his emotions. In one direction he saw blackness and felt cold. It was the way home. Looking over his shoulder he saw light and felt warmth. In that same direction he saw the cleric again. A glimpse of a future encounter somewhere in the Metaverse flickered in the light, but the darkness returned. The pirate did not move again for several hours.

Many hours later...

The barkeep was ready for last call. Although recent battles had wrested away far too many profitable drinking nights, he was exhausted. He took a deep breath, opened his large mouth, and began to shout, "LAST CA..."

The front entrance burst open as the motley crew of heroes swaggered in. Having reached the conclusion of their grand meeting in the Fellowship Halls, it was time for celebrating. It would be a celebration of life for these survivors and a tribute to their fallen comrades. In the barkeep's eyes they were wealthy customers. He waved his arms at the many wenches. Tables needed to be cleared for these new arrivals.

First to enter was the local Fellowship: the Mad Prophet with his many voices; the bard Michael Casey, always a welcomed entertainer; a troop of great wizards, Ray the Wanderer, Gengsta, vincible, and philopoemen; the Green Knight, ThelebK; H50 the halfling alchemist; the mighty warrior Barry Light; and even the dark elf Gibbie99.

A trio of new faces followed them through the doorway. Master Yoda, Qui-Gon Jinn, and Obi Wan Kenobi would not order any spirits, but given the number of drinkers they accompanied, they were just as welcome.

The third group was... was a bunch of animals! The barkeep recognized a few of them as the talking-drinking-paying kind so he let them all in. There was a wombat who acted as though he was already three-pints-full. There was a snake whose scales reflected all the colors of a rainbow. There was a bat who flew into a post, got up, flew into a table, and then crawled onto a chair. "Mus' be four-pints-full," the barkeep muttered to himself. There was a penguin who asked for a martini - "shaken, not stirred." And there was a cute koala bear who seemed to be keeping his eyes on Ray.

The last through the door was idleprocess. Though an enchanter, he normally spent his time with the common folk. He glanced around and noted that very few common folk were in the bar. For that matter, very few had been in town his entire stay. It was as though the common folk from many regions and these present extraordinary beings had been divided by a higher power. He shook away the thought and joined in the festivities.

The Spymaster watched from a corner and quietly took notes. Many details of the recent battles were shared through story, poetry, and song. Hours past until dawn intruded with its narrow beams of light. As the crowd hugged, staggered, and carried its way out, Gerakken looked over to the opposite end of the Prancing Pony. He was very concerned about a shipmate of his, but the Spymaster instinctively knew Kit's ailment was beyond any conventional healing. Gerakken's lips bent into a frown. Kit was gone.

FOTR members, councilors, avatars, outriders and even Halflings:

Congrats on (returning to?) #1!

Used to be, keeping up with the posts was a full-time job. Now, keeping up with the Empire rankings is almost as hard. Defections! Intrigues! New powers are founded! Stagnant powers fade! HIGH ADVENTURE!

Just posted my first crippling and I have to say, regardless of the reasoning behind it, it's rather disheartening to only get 13.8% of the actual points added to my total.

In point of fact, I believe that the size of the map is seriously overweighted since people have scores of 12k+ on gigantic maps at the "why even bother to play it" level of cakewalk.

In any case, great stories going on all over the forum, cudos to all involved, and it certainly has been fun to watch the battle at the top for supremacy of the metaverse :D

Keep up the good work on all fronts, and I'll continue to do what I can also.

*Edit*
It IS nice to see 14 of us in the top 100 however ...

It looks like we're duking it out with the MWC. If we don't win this week, we should be able to stomp them next week.
Mad Prophet, the division by number of games played really puts a damper on that. But based on current knowledge of the scoring process, you should experience a sharper rise in scores with each submission after this week. Coincidentally, I will too, as will many other people in the Fellowship.

Gengsta,

Thanks for the reply, and if true, I am in for a serious jump. A casual glance at my submissions will show that I have been pushing up the difficulty rapidly as I refine my style and learn how the game works. I finished that crippling with something like 50k in my reserves even after buying anything that took my fancy, although admittedly I started on an extraordinary map.

One thing I still would like to know however is how the heck people are getting these 12-14k scores on the tiny/maso maps. Either there is something I am utterly unaware of, or some kind of serious milking is going on (which I am also unaware of ;p ).

Zoshan and idleprocess both unleashed a pair of small to medium sized missiles for MWC yesterday.

Though they have recruited a number of new folks recently, their senators still form the mainstay of their missile command.

I believe the Fellowship still has a slight edge in terms of numbers of active players so it would be an interesting race.

Gengsta, I'm still puzzled over the month blocks.

When does each block start? Is it a fixed day for all or is player dependent?

[Message Edited]
It's 30/31 days and depends on date of last submission. I think that number explained Staffa's jump the best, and his lack of similar sized jumps before. It also best explains the ability to lose points on submissions during the middle of the month.

And if you remember, you had a pretty good jump when you submitted on the 14th to overtake Staffa. Look at your games and you will see the four so games that made the world of difference.

To Mad Prophet
I've gotten tired of really milking my score. I just can't handle the tedium of hitting turn hundreds of times, and my computer can't handle the challenge of playing on intelligent or higher on larger maps. Personally I don't understand how PBP consistently scores 19k on gigantics or Ray 13k on tiny masos, and really I don't care either. I play quite a few maso games, but the scores are usually too poor to submit. If I want to help the Fellowship, I ease back the difficulty and play some experimental games.
