The Prancing Pony

The welcome sight of a tavern greeted the weary traveler as he moved within distance of the town. Having traveled for many days, he longed for a cool mug of ale to slake his road-thirst.

As he approached the inn, he could see a sign of a fat pony rearing up on its hindlegs. The letters, THE PRANCING PONY, was painted in white.

The common room was large and rowdy. A bald and overweight innkeeper stood bent over the counter, whispering the latest gossip into the ears of a patron. On the benches were various folks, the local drunks for most part, but in corners of the taverns, he noticed there were groups drinking by themselves.

Setting himself down, the traveler handed a couple of coppers over to one of the bar wrenches for ale.

“Welcome to the Pony.” The traveler was mildly surprised to find a sprightly old man next to him, holding his gaze with keen eyes that belittled his obvious antiquity.

“Thank you, and whom do I have the pleasure of addressing?”

“Folks around here call me Ray and I do enjoy meeting up with newcomers to see if there is any assistance I could render.”

“That would be great, Ray. I would love to learn about the people who reside in these parts.”

“Ah, that’s a frequently asked question and one I’m well qualified to answer. There are a couple of factions here in Meta that you will want to watch out for.

The Pirates are currently dominant. Not the most refined of speakers but they are a jovial bunch, with a particular weakness for good drinks.

The Diplomats hold power in the Courts. Their courtiers are many but they don’t really mix with us common folks.

The Farmers are our working class. Hardworking and honest, they are however on occasion given over to overly elaborate festivals and celebrations.

The Galahs are a group of seafarers. They are also good trainers of livestock.

The Warlords are our warrior class. Their love for long campaigns leaves them frequently out of town.

The Spiders monopolise our merchant guilds. They are by far the most invertebrate bunch of traders you will ever see.

Far to the north, the Undead holds a death grip over the wastelands. I would caution you against traveling down that road.

There are many other smaller factions around, but I leave the details of those to Barley our bartender.

One of our tavern regulars, Gerakken the Spymaster, is also in the know with regards to many of the factions. So do buy him a drink if you want to find out more.”

“Thanks for the insights, Ray. But how about yourself, which faction do you belong to?”

Smiling to himself, the old man stood.

“Come round the Fellowship Halls tomorrow morning and I’ll show you around.”

Whilst I am a "higher number", I go back to the OS/2 version in 1995 - I only discovered the Windows version last month....

Alex, you belong to the Precursor list :D

I wonder who else played the OS/2 version here?

To score big, the strategy. Turn turn turn turn especailly early. Don't take too much too fast. Culture bomb near the end and take em all rapidly. You get no points for building pop after you've taken most of the map. Of course it's boring as heck so I don't worry too much bout that and just play. If I score, I score. Although I think I'll be playin stock ai's for awhile till they fix a glitch.

I agree that alcohol is a vital part of any real Galciv gaming strategy, at least if one is in the drunken master school of gaming! Alpha strikes take a long time to prepare. I am an advocate of building up transports and attack forces early on, so I tend to get the preparation part quite right, but I prefer to play with my prey a bit without killing them completely in one blow. One never knows what else they will research or what tribute they will pay later on.

On the other great news front of the day, recruitment wins yet again. Both the Fellowship and MWC used very successful roster additions to keep the momentum up for their scoring drives. Now the pirates strike back with our mutant franchise partners! As I said before, there are no dynasties on the Metaverse. The fortunes of war are ever changing. But I am not one to underestimate worthy foes. The MWC has persistence that cannot be ignored and the Fellowship has several superior players. When it comes to the Fellowship, quality is a quantity all its own, to reverse the Russian saying.

Nice of you to drop by, Bombashaman.
Have fun with the game!

And thanks for the encouragement, we have some catching up to do with GROSS.

Strategies (though limited):

1.)Patience - build economy and military
2.)Tech whore

I tried an "Alpha Strike" last night. It backfired on me and I got wiped out. The stupid Arceans apparently noticed the transports and decided to chew me up. >:(

It seems my best strategy is to keep the strongest empire occupied with the other empires until I am strong enough.

By the way, looks like I'll be updating the Fellowship News today...

:notsure:

Good work on the Fellowship News, Barry!

Yes, the near complete assimilation of FF by GROSS is indeed headline material.

I will definitely suggest some material for our website by this weekend. Maybe you can give me your email address.

Once our veteran member J4 returns, I'm sure he would be delighted to join you as a reporter. If you are interested, search for J4 in the forum and read his old Galactic News Network reports!

End-of-Week business report

Ray, my email is [email protected]

Believe it or not, I actually check my email during the week more than I do during the weekend.

I've been trying to offset the GROSS/FF merger by recruiting more. I figured if all of FF merged, we'd be down by somewhere around 120,000+ and that's a wide margin.

I'll take a look through the forums for J4's GNN.

I'm working on a game that I hope to finish sometime this weekend. Everyone in the Fellowship needs to crank out some games this weekend for us to stay competitive.

We were behind GROSS about 150k points just 1+ week back and somehow we managed to get more than 70k ahead. 120k isn't unsurmoutable. :)

The old dynasties of Apolyton and European Alliance held huge leads previously but see where they are now.

We just have to keep plugging away at both games and recruiting.

For all who are wondering, I just updated the Fellowship News. You can read it here http://home.earthlink.net/~nascarfanatic/fellowshipnewslog/

Ray: Yes, we'll just have to work a little harder, but we can regain the lead. :)

Reposted for our enjoyment:

GNN---Humans found to be cheating

The Alien Intelligence Community was in an uproar today when the non-profit galactic corporation (NPGC) found that Humans were regularly cheating while playing Galactic Civilization.

Emperor X-1 from the Yor Empire had this to say:
"It was very odd indeed that no matter how hard we tried our Overlords were not able to penetrate the human Corvettes. Well...we later found out that the humans stacked 99 Corvettes and we were unable to get through."

"Yes! We Love War, but these humans...they war...call peace...war call peace...they war...how can we keep up!" said Drengin General Charzak
"Humans must play fair and stop complaining about the Alien Intelligence Community cheating in the game, we do not as long as we are kept at an Intelligent level." Torian ambassador said. "We are bugged in some ways, yes, but cheaters no! We will persevere and may BRAD be with us."

Thanks to J4 for this article!

The first is a reference to the Fleet Defense Bonus. J4 was using stacked ships to defeat bigger enemy ships.

The cheating reference was targeted at a spate of "AI cheats" threads that appeared during that time.

Sure brings back memories. :)

The original post left out one type of "cheat" that would really bug me if I were an A.I.

"We were winning handily when all of the sudden the space-time continum went into flux and we found ourselves back in time 5 months! All races seemed to have lost all memory and advances that had been gained. And now, strangely, the humans seem to know all our top secret plans and are doing much better."

Hahahahaha!!! Yes, the Load Button cheat. LOL
