The Prancing Pony

The welcome sight of a tavern greeted the weary traveler as he moved within distance of the town. Having traveled for many days, he longed for a cool mug of ale to slake his road-thirst.

As he approached the inn, he could see a sign of a fat pony rearing up on its hindlegs. The letters, THE PRANCING PONY, was painted in white.

The common room was large and rowdy. A bald and overweight innkeeper stood bent over the counter, whispering the latest gossip into the ears of a patron. On the benches were various folks, the local drunks for most part, but in corners of the taverns, he noticed there were groups drinking by themselves.

Setting himself down, the traveler handed a couple of coppers over to one of the bar wrenches for ale.

“Welcome to the Pony.” The traveler was mildly surprised to find a sprightly old man next to him, holding his gaze with keen eyes that belittled his obvious antiquity.

“Thank you, and whom do I have the pleasure of addressing?”

“Folks around here call me Ray and I do enjoy meeting up with newcomers to see if there is any assistance I could render.”

“That would be great, Ray. I would love to learn about the people who reside in these parts.”

“Ah, that’s a frequently asked question and one I’m well qualified to answer. There are a couple of factions here in Meta that you will want to watch out for.

The Pirates are currently dominant. Not the most refined of speakers but they are a jovial bunch, with a particular weakness for good drinks.

The Diplomats hold power in the Courts. Their courtiers are many but they don’t really mix with us common folks.

The Farmers are our working class. Hardworking and honest, they are however on occasion given over to overly elaborate festivals and celebrations.

The Galahs are a group of seafarers. They are also good trainers of livestock.

The Warlords are our warrior class. Their love for long campaigns leaves them frequently out of town.

The Spiders monopolise our merchant guilds. They are by far the most invertebrate bunch of traders you will ever see.

Far to the north, the Undead holds a death grip over the wastelands. I would caution you against traveling down that road.

There are many other smaller factions around, but I leave the details of those to Barley our bartender.

One of our tavern regulars, Gerakken the Spymaster, is also in the know with regards to many of the factions. So do buy him a drink if you want to find out more.”

“Thanks for the insights, Ray. But how about yourself, which faction do you belong to?”

Smiling to himself, the old man stood.

“Come round the Fellowship Halls tomorrow morning and I’ll show you around.”

Just commenting on how GROSS has steadily degenerated from a mainly a pirate empire into mainly a drunken empire. The many comments that I managed to spray about the forum uses the newest recruits to take a heavy jab at the current GROSS empire.

Personally I think that culturally, GROSS has recessed over the past month or so, even as it retains its number 1 in the empire standings. I casted the new recruits to GROSS as breathing life back into a moribund group.

For example:
The new recruits are really pirates for a bit before becoming drunks. (on the SS Pirates thread)
The new recruits are spiny and stir up excitement with every step. (ANZAC thread - you have to read this one carefully - I couldn't really find a better way to do it without being blatant)
The new recruits are breathing life back into a corpse. (Jedi Republic - blatant, but I didn't expect you to check the thread)

No offense to you or any of your empire mates, but the creativity just hasn't been there. - CypherPax and Gerrakan have my respect. Pontius is just generic. And to tell the truth, Darth Bob is just bad. :(
And quite a lot others that are just not really around.

The Fellowship has quieted down quite a bit from a week ago, but I'm pushing through the WotWs as quickly as possible. Maybe generate more excitement.

I know I am harsh, but hey a commentary is a commentary and you wanted the truth.
Actually for the ANZAC post, if I made it more poetic and juxtaposed the two uses of "step" it would have worked much better, but that's more literary techniques. I didn't think of it when I wrote the post.

What is this two-page mess to which you are referring? I've been rather busy and haven't been checking any empire threads other than this one.
Aaaaaahhh... makes a lot more sense now. Not harsh at all (except about Darth Bob - try to imagine who he is in real life - hint hint). Thanks. :)

[Ray: "...took Kit's bait" ;p ]

You didn't rate me! Am I that bad? I don't think I'm going to contribute to the Fellowship thread anymore. (:( Just curl up under a blanket and cry my little Evil heart out.

I have been very VERY excited about a new situation with these new recruits - new stories, new everything! Killa Koala, Wild Wombat, and Hurley (where's bakka?) are extremely creative and I love their stories. BUT I went away for a few of hours and came back to find two whole pages of crap!

PontiusBruinPilot, Ray the Wanderer, Gengsta, BlueSteel, Slitherin... PLEASE don’t let your pride get in the way of great stories and funny antics. Give these guys some space. Let ‘em have fun and we ALL will. I agree with Gengsta about the new recuits breathing life into G.R.O.S.S. This should be exciting! :D

Well excuse me for not breaking out memories of old sci-fi / fantasy movies / books and re-hashing them mixing them up.. "The ANZACS" are'nt that type of Empire .. they are geographically / like minded ppl who are proud of where they are from.. and what the ANZAC name stands for. I report things as I see them... being poached by pirates (Yes when I was deciding who'm to join they approached me too.. and are still interested) and having the empire your in (Fairly newly signed up to) disintergrate as quick is you can play games then you to would take a stand.. to try to save it .. wouldn't you..

I am mearly wrapping a story line around what is actually happening in the metaverse.. and believe me its not easy to try to combine fantasy/.sci-fi and geographic groups together.. but i think i'm doing ok.. sure there will be ppl that take things too serously as in any activity.. but we are ALL here to have fun.. (and rule the metaverse) .. no i'm not really upset that ppl are leaving the ANZACS etc... its all part of the stoery.. which I shall continue with after this msg.. It's up to everyone to make up their own minds.. Most of the people are taking my story how it is ment.. a fun way to try and keep ppl involved in the empire that i'm in.. and recruit more Overlords. I do not however appologise for what i've written (or am going to write) however I am prepaired to those who are offended for their on lack of security in that they may think that its personal.. sheesh.... they need to get a life and lighten up a bit...

Yes I'm Blatent at times... but thats the ANZACS .. if we weren't that nature of ppl then wouldn't survive... I don't sware.. i'm polite..

I['m really trying to help tie the metaverse together the best way i can.. if it causes friction between empires in the metaverse So bee it.. we are after all trying to compete for the metaverse... everything I read in the forum i try to incorporate into the theme.. some things i can't others i can .. you try it.. writing on fact rather than pure fiction.. its a lot harder than it looks...

enough said... now back to the fun... :)

PS: this msg is not pointed to anyone in particular its a general msg to explain my writtings and to try to smooth some ruffled FelboCarb out there..

so Nannoo Nanoo this is BlueSteel signing off.. fly and be free and don't let the daggits bite

Ok BlueSteel, we understand the ANZACs Empire isn't that sort of empire. But the Fellowship and GROSS are, and it is important for their survival to continue developing their theme. I have seen GROSS regress more and more into the get drunk and pass out theme rather than create new ideas that can be associated with pirates.

You can continue to call them traitors or deserters, but repeating the same argument isn't going to get you anywhere, but less friends. I even took the easy open jab at the FF recruits of GROSS, of course, disguising my harder jab at GROSS itself. Now that I have made myself clear - explanation necessary - I am not about to say it again.

I tried in an earlier story to liven up GROSS (remember that fantasy story of my visit to the Ship of the Doom) by attacking all their tire custom of capturing Drop Bear, Mrs. Pilot coming up and rescuing him, everyone rampaging for the beer, and the overused Walking the Plank bit.

I doubt many GROSSers ended up reading the story (my fault for being so long) because Pontius attacked the most insignificant part of the story at the very end and ended up dismissing it. I followed up with a more direct attack, and Gibbie99 defected, so I stopped doing that. I know it wasn't because of me, but it would have been really bad for relations.

Anyways, bless you KitWarrior for bring up keelhauling, and CypherPax for his stories of Mrs. Pax (someone actually responded interactively to an outside story), but lately GROSS still seemed stagnant (can be blamed for the empire's fall from grace). The new addition will be very good for GROSS, but don't underestimate their loyalty to ANZAC, if being pirates wears out on them.

Refer to my ANZAC post:
So now that GROSS has culture again, you should have no more lame excuses for losing first place to FOTR. Only fun creative ones written by Killa Koala! :p

Sure.... I'm not stopping them....

However I do believe that its not up to you or anyone to tell the pirates of GROSS how to behave... They've just had a major Coo in recruting.. If I was in GROSS.. or in the new sub GROSS family I too would be Celebrating.. getting drunk.. and just generally having a great time of it..which is EXACTLY what they are doing...

As for my reactions I believe that my story line is a perfect example of an empire in the metaverse..

eg:
1. There is life out there but not as we know it...
2. If you loose a planet in a game of GalCiv (or say 3-5 of your top active planets) to another empire OR even if they simply break away .. you try to get them back.. don't you...
3. I'm a caotic and play universalists.. I'll do what i deem necessary for the servival of my empire..
4. I don't care how others carry on so long as I play the game to win (win / loose draw doesn't matter.. so long as i can say that I've done my best)
5. I always play for a militery win.. however I never knock back easy wins due to espionage/sabotage .. sucking ppl in... If they feel guilty who am I to stop them... who knows some may swing back (and invariably do.. in the game anyway)
6. the metaverse IS an extention of the Game.. and I certianly don't hear the computer shouting foul tactics when i win..
7. If ppl get drawn into my stories then that means that I've done a good job.. I'm telling it from MY side .. to get the other side of things I rely totaly on others input/reactions.. and Yes aI've had flops of msgs too that have gone absolutely nowhere... then that avenue to me is dead.. as my storys are written in sewudo realtime .. I have to think fast and act.. then play the lines as long as i can before the line breaks...
8. The Anzacs were dead in the water too... never mind about GROSS.. I'm simply doing what Gross did to get their recruits.. appeal to ppls feelings and ego's

I know all empires are getting players fro other empires thats how the game is played..

so all i can say is .. Let the pirates or anyone for that matter decide how they want to play... whats so hard about my story is that when a story line gets broken or ignored that chapter ends.. If pirates nabbed your family when they were overseas trying to spread their wings and they get in with the wrong croud.. wouldn't you try to get them back ? or would you simply was your hands of the whole matter... If the latter then your empires will soon die.. you have to fight for what you believe in.. or perish

WOW.. i've rambled on again... (one of my biggest flaws.. but then all GOOD story tellers/writters do.. isn't it :)

no hard feelings from me to anyone out there

Thank you. I am just sad that my creative muse cannot come out more often for the sake of GROSS or the Metaverse in general. Now I am going to ramble some about empiring in general.

I somewhat agree on the comment of GROSS becoming a stagnant empire, but that is what happens when a lot of the members go inactive. It is what will happen to the Fellowship in good time as well if fresh blood does not bring new ideas to the forum.

Submitting games is not always enough. Look at the Euros and the Canadians. They have a lot of games still being submitted, but do they, as a group, participate or lend ideas on building their empires to the forum? No, they are practically lifeless as a group on the forum. That doesn't do the empire or the Galciv community any good.

In the end, all real empires have life cycles. No fresh recruits eventually means death. The empire survives based more upon the vision of the newer recruits who keep alive some of the traditions of the elders while making new rules all their own.

I am very excited about newer generation members like KitWarrior and the newest recruits, the South Seas gang. They are indeed giving my empire an incredible boost. I am not talking just score here, but the whole vision and ideals thing. If we only had ten real top 10 empires in the Metaverse with new vision and ideals still instead of five near brain dead ones in the top 10 crowd, it would be a better place.

(Note: Gerakken sometimes has radical, unorthodox viewpoints. But he generally sneaks around observing people. You can take or ignore his advice at your own risk! :) )

vincible,

Just saw your Maso Gigantic win. Good job!

Do share. I'm playing one myself now and I'm cautiously optimistic about winning.

Whew, just took out the most powerful Incredible AI, the Arceans' 11 systems. They had Rangers to my frigates.

Had 3 Incredibles attacking me at the same time. Thank goodness it was a gigantic map, they took ages to mount attacks.

Thanks Kit - and happy to provide some entertainment. Which is, after all, what the literary offerings are here - an adjunct to game playing, for me anyway. The writing has given me a reason to play on, when I would have lost interest long ago. That, and a receptive and interesting bunch of like-minded players in all the other active empires.

No one is seriously going to start offering critiques of what's on offer, here, are they? You can either:

1. Write stories.
2. Trade shots about the plots that unfold.
3. Remain a lurker and just enjoy the read.

Reflecting on another's 'creativity', or regarding them as 'generic' - well, the Metaverse is the competition, NOT the bloody writing! This stuff just tends to DISCOURAGE shy writers - and that's the WORST outcome! We NEED more people to be vocal on the boards!

Bluesteel - no ruffled fur on THIS wombat, I can assure you. I'll trade (hopefully) clever and amusing stories with you lot and we'll have fun taking the piss out of each other - that'd be an Aussie way to do things. My reasons for leaving ANZAC, forming FF and then to GROSS are public and available in the last four weeks worth of threads. If you can galvanise ANZAC to new heights - good on ya! I couldn't, and wanted something different - and am having great fun!

Guys, this is not a story-writing board where we trade creative stories and critic each other. Role-playing and story writing is part of the fun of empiring.

Give everyone here the freedom to do what they find the most fun. Whether it is plain competition, trading strategies or just enjoying the company of like-minded people.

Now Ray, you know I love you, but you're going to have to work on some of your writing techniques. Let's start at the beginning, shall we?

There's something missing here, Ray. What is it Ray? Now, now... you know you shouldn't assume everyone is following your logic.

Give everyone here the freedom to do what they find the most fun.

A command, Ray? Tsk tsk. Persuasion, Ray. Persuasion.

Heavens to Betsys, Ray! An incomplete sentence?!?! This is very disappointing. I'm afraid I'm going to have to submit a petition to have you removed from the story-writing board. ;)

Well, I opened the can of worms and I should close it. The whole thing wasn't suppose to get to an individual level at all - just an empire wide comment.

I'm retracting everything I said in my posts about individuals. Ignore them all. It was all a mistake.

I'm afraid that the credit for the gigantic maso win really should go more to getting a nice start than to my own skills.

All five AIs were set to pure evil/incredible, and I went pure good. I started off after maybe five control-N's with a big cluster in the corner, and did sector influence checks and realized that it was all mine and the other AIs were scattered throughout the other smaller clusters. It turned out after colonization that maybe a bit under a third of the habitable stars in the galaxy were under my control (I had the speed +1 bonus, which is lucky or the Arceans would have grabbed some of my cluster). I later found out that all the best worlds were elsewhere, there were a couple base PQ 26's owned by the Arceans and Altarians, and many with a base PQ of 20ish, whereas I had a whole slew of class 15-17 planets, a couple class 18s, and one class 20 planet (Earth), if I recall correctly. But I had so many planets that I still had the advantage.

The main problem was the map size--I sent fleets but they were obsolete by the time they arrived! Certainly by the time I'd set up an Alpha Strike. I made some progress that way, and I'm sure I could have taken over the map very slowly (since after capturing some nice worlds I was in a position where I was teching faster than the AIs), but my computer was groaning about the strains of a Gigantic map and running really unbearably slowly. So I decided to ditch doing things the honorable way and to take the quickest way instead (quickest real-time way, not quickest game-time way). I teched to Cultural Conquest and built a whole slew of constructors and seeded the galaxy with Party Palaces, and bought most of the influence starbases in the galaxy with tech. A cheap win, but still a win. I unfortunately did not have Gravity Accelerators since the minor that made them and Diplomatic Translators--died before I ever found them. So all this took a long while. But eventually I made enough Party Palaces along with a couple tiny colonies in the hearts of their empires and everyone flipped and it was game over. The comp really needs help in dealing with that.

And of course the whole time I was exploiting the usual tricks of bribing the AIs to war (you're right, that needs to be nerfed) tech trading, etc. Also, I usually don't do this but I built several Trade Starbases--generally I consider this to be a cheese tactic. That REALLY needs to be nerfed--I don't know why Brad doesn't put diminishing returns on them. I put maybe ten in one sector along a short trade route with the Caronids but then I started to feel dirty, plus half my income was from trade at one point, so I stopped adding them (though I wasn't totally pure, I didn't disband them or my existing trade routes).

I'm not going to play Gigantic again on this computer. My previous Huge game was kind of fun though and I might try another of those--my comp wasn't hurting too badly in that game.

XXXXXX warning #1 issued to Kit Warrier. That post wasn't
A: Obtuse enough
B: Holier than though enough
C: Falsely intellectual enough
D: Deep enough
E: Subtle enough.
I'm afraid I'm going to have to put you on report for failing to meet the Gengsta standard. Oh and I guess I better issue a warning to myself for this one too.

XXXXX warning #1 Pontius Bruin Pilot.

That is the Gengsta standard, and has the Gengsta stamp of approval. Although your post doesn't fail the standard at all.

I mean you used a hyperbole, your pride shows through the post. The subtle emphasis on subtle using deep, obtuse, and subtle. It's just wonderful to see someone writing with such skill!

Please do come back and visit often!

No no no oh genius one. Why back off now? Why none of us could ever measure up to the "true epitome of intellectualism" that is Gengsta. I mean I am unworthy to judge what meets the Gengst Criteria, but as you pointed out above, everyone needs to change to suit your whims and wishes. After all, us little ones were put on this earth merely to do just that. We, in our unworthy way, have developed this warning system to try and make the vain attempt to reach the true standard by which all should be judged. The Gengsta Standard.

Of course one wonders why the heck you don't keep your stuffed shirt pompous attitude to yourself and why when you don't like someone's stories you keep reading them. But..

XXXXXXXXXX Oh no!!! a backslide. Too direct. Not subtle or obtuse enough. Oh darn that's #2 for me. I guess there's no hope.

Gerakken was trying to enjoy a few stiff drinks at the Prancing Pony, lurking around, occasionally getting into some small talk with the patrons, when a bar fight breaks out nearby. First, it was relatively well contained, just a couple of people punching each other. Then more people got shoved around and drawn into the fray. Soon, chairs were being broken over heads and people were being thrown down, smashing tables.

The Spymaster looked around nervously, trying to find a way to an exit that wasn't blocked while watching his own back. The Watch would be coming soon to break things up, and Gerakken tends to stay away from the law. They tend to ask too many questions because of his reputation as a sneaky spy who engaged in shady backroom dealing. Trying to stay out of the fight, the nimble Spymaster avoided a randomly thrown barstool and a pool cue wielding drunkard that was swinging his weapon of choice wildly all around, vainly trying to hit anybody.

Over the din of the brawl, whistles were being blown by the approaching Watch. Gerakken dives over the counter and quickly crawls to the end. Then he waited for an opening so that he could quickly get to the nearby door to the cellar and hopefully slip inside unnoticed. A precious few seconds pass. A pair of brawling men were close by. One of the fighters was picked up and thrown down the length of the bar counter. Gerakken waited for the thrower to either chase down his unfortunate opponent or to wade back into the main room to fight another patron. But he just stood there, slightly crouched, teeth gritted, arms out. Just waiting for someone else to come to him instead. Gerakken decided that he could wait no more.

The Spymaster quickly grabs a bottle of beer from under the counter and throws it at the back of the man's head. The brawler-in-waiting collapses onto the floor, stunned. Gerakken quickly scampers across to the door, stands up, masterfully opens it, slips inside, and closes it in very short order. The Watch was right outside now, forcing their way into the establishment. Few knew that there was a trap door and a secret tunnel out of the storage cellar that Gerakken was now in, and the Spymaster quickly descended the stairs, took a right turn to go to one of the back corners. Moving a barrel aside, Gerakken finds a hidden handhold and lifts the trapdoor aside. He starts down the ladder, closes the trapdoor, and heads out through the tunnel.

By now, the Watch would be taking the hotheads that instigated this fight to the jail to dry out and to cool off. And Gerakken would be far away. :)

Miles entered the tavern, ordered and ale from the barkeep. The barkeep, Toxiar, looked dubiously at Miles, and handed over the drink.
“Heard you’re looking for a good rewardin’ cause, Zyrixion,” Toxiar stated pointedly. Zyrixion was the name Miles was known by in these parts of the kingdom.
“Yea,” replied Zyrixion, “any news of troubled folk in need of assistance near our fine city of Fornost Erain?”
“There be news of Marauders sailing the waters of the lake bordering Bareketta. They plunder Barketta once a month and move on elsewhere temporarily.”
“Sounds like my kind of adventure,” Zyrixion stated with earnest eagerness.
“If ye be goin’ there take some of your monastery folk with ye. They number about 13 in number,” stated Toxiar.
“I’m sure I can recruit some fine candidates. The Monastery has a large following, and have many a powerful warrior to assist me, even some skilled in wizardry,” Zyrixion informed him.
“What reward be posted for the demise of the marauders?” Zyrixion inquired.
“1000 gold pieces,” replied Toxiar dryly.
“Thanks for the news, Toxiar. I’ll be seeing you when I return from my quest.”
Barketta was a small town with inadequate garrison, which made it ripe for marauders. It was three days journey from Fornost Erain with three villages and an fort along the route. Zyrixion went back to the monastery to speak with master-at-arms Seripitus. He found Seripitus in the monastery courtyard engaged in training exercises of his forces. Desipte having left the monastery temporarily in pursuit of adventure and study in the ways of the bard, Zyrixion still held the respect of the master-at-arms.
Seripitus greeted him with a nod and asked, “Why are you interrupting my training session?”
The disciplined students ceased their sparing and stood at parade rest waiting for the matter to be resolved.
“I have a new quest, and I am in need of some adventurers to fulfill it.”
“Just what kind of quest is this and how will it aid the monastery?”, inquired Seripitus.
“Well, there are marauders plundering Barketta occasionally, and they are offering 1000 gold pieces reward for the demise of the bandits plus what we get from them ourselves,” stated Zyrixion eagerly.
“What will be your cut of the booty?” asked Seripitus doubtfully.
“Only ten percent, and the rest will go to the monastery,” Zyrixion humbly stated.
“How many adventurers would you require?” Seriptus questioned further.
“I think five of our best would do. These maruaders sound like semi-skilled rogues.”
“I accept your offer Zyrixion. May Eru protect you and grant you the power to defeat this evil blight upon Barketta. I will provide you with these Five multi-field adventurers: Jinxor the mage monk, Quinil the ranger monk, Kryll the fighter monk, Frellas the cleric monk, and another ranger monk, Roveous.”
“Fine picks sir,” Zyrixion said respectfully.
Seriptus called forth each monk by name, and one by one they came to stand beside Zyrixion.
“I’d advise you all to gather your weapons and magic items now, as we will be leaving this morning. Meet me in front of the monastery in fifteen minutes,” Zyrixion informed them.
They dispersed hastily to gather their items, and twenty minutes later they were ready to set out on their adventure.
The journey took them down and through the Tyrn Formen cliffs passing a fort and finally ending at nightfall uneventfully in the village of Safia. The next day of travel took them to the village of Riptak, and the following day they neared their destination, entering the village of Plid-Adel. All this uneventful, for this part of the kingdom seldom saw creatures or demons roving the lands.
The following day, they passed the ruins of Drelox keep, and encountered three rogues there-in who accosted them and said, “Want to buy a magic rod?”
The older more experienced Kyrll stepped forward, having been appointed leader of the expedition due to his immense fighting skill, and said, “We have no need for goods obviously stolen from some decent citizen. Be gone before you try our patience.”
Obviously outnumbered, the rogues wisely decided to turn and walk the opposite direction to which the party was traveling.
They finally reached Barketta just as the sun was setting, and immediately went to speak with the town viceroy. A passerby directed them to the building where he stayed, and they knocked on his front door.
The door opened and an older man appeared behind it, saying, “What can I do for you good fellows?”
“We’re here to defeat the marauders that have plundered your town,” Zyrixion spoke up, the consumate diplomat.
“Well you look like a tough bunch, you do. My name is Creish,” the viceroy said, introducing himself with dignity.
After introducing each of themselves, they verified the reward being offered and Zyrixion asked the obvious question, “Do you know where the bandits might be camped out?”
“The seem to come across this narrow section of the lake, so they would most likely be found directly on the other side of the lake,” Creish informed them.
“Can you provide us with a small boat?” Zyrixion asked humbly.
“I’ll talk to the dockmaster tonight and arrange a boat for you in the morning.”
“Thanks, we’ll try to expedite the vanquishing of this marauding bunch of hooligans,” Zyrixion assured, then continued, “Well report back when our quest is completed. Fare thee well ‘til then.”
“Fare thee well yourselves,” Creish wished pointedly, and closed his door.
The party left to go to the local tavern/inn to eat and rest for the next day’s adventure. They awoke early and procured the boat from the dockmaster and set sail for the opposite shoreline, filled with trepidation at what they might find.
After searching the coast for about three hours, they spotted a ship off in the distance, and immediately tacked to turn around and avoid being spotted. They landed the craft on the shore about a mile from the beached boat they saw and disembarked. They gathered their gear and headed toward the location of the boat.
Upon arriving within a close distance, they sent out their most experienced ranger, Quinil, to scout out the land around the boat. Quinil approached the area under the cover of brush and trees, moving stealthily and soundlessly. He spotted a small settlement after a half hour of searching which looked like a ripe target for the group as there were no defensive guards posted. He noticed twelve rogues in the encampment, and stealed away back to his group with the information.
“We should sneak up at twilight and blitz them,” Kryll said in advisement, and everyone agreed, knowing Kryll’s expertise in weapons and tactics.
At twilight they headed out, furtively moving toward the settlement. Everyone except for Jinxor and Kryll, paired up in preparation for the attack. They each moved into position and awaited the signal to proceed. The rogues were busy building a fire and preparing their evening meal when a bird call signalled the onslaught of the party. Momentarily surprised, the rogues quickly sequed from meal preparation to defensive battle mode, grabbing their weapons as fast as they could. But before all could grab their weapons Kryll had taken down three in a blinding fury of blade pierces and slashes, while Jinxor the mage spell-cast a wounding fire missile to another. Zyrixion and Roveous failed to catch anyone before their weapons could be drawn, but Quinil pierced one rogue with a long sword while Frellas brought his mace down on the head of the unfortunate rogue.
The remaining nine rogues, now armed, formed a defensive ring, one of them uttering a battle cry in some local dialect. The battle cryer was apparently the leader and most formidable fighter amongst the group, and Kryll moved in to take this one himself. As kryll attacked the others moved in to attack the other rogues and it was two on one in some cases. Jinxor remained outside of weapon’s reach casting attack spell after attack spell taking down two in the process. As Kryll attacked the leader, the rogue next to him landed a lucky attack on Kryll which wounded him severely. Frellas the cleric saw this and quickly stepped back from the fray and cast a heal spell on Kryll. Kryll quickly got his strength back and continued his assault. Kryll then took down two with one stroke and the rest of the party did their part fighting valiantly though taking some casulaties in terms of wounds.
After the rogues were vanquished, Frellas moved quickly to cast more healing spells, first on Zyrixion who had taken the worst of it, then on the others.
Plundering the plunderers, they located jewelry and gold pieces, and they estimated the total worth at 4200 gold pieces, which they would return to Bareketta after exacting a percentage, of course.
They returned to Barketta, took 1000 gold pieces (plus a percentage of the rest) out of the booty as the reward and Creish thanked them dearly for conquering the evil blight upon his humble town.
During the journey back to Fornost Erain, the party, in high spirits, exchanged banter about each other’s role in the demise of the marauders. Upon arriving home, Zyrixion got his ten percent and then returned to the Fellowship, now more experienced and eager to help them with their adventures.

By the way, the above post has nothing implied about G.R.O.S.S. or pirates in general. It's just a fantasy story. No offense meant. ;)

Well, I opened the can of worms and I should close it. The whole thing wasn't suppose to get to an individual level at all - just an empire wide comment

I'm retracting everything I said in my posts about individuals. Ignore them all. It was all a mistake.

Gengsta, I appreciate you making such a retraction. I felt the individual comments were unnecessary. Thanks.

I'm afraid that the credit for the gigantic maso win really should go more to getting a nice start than to my own skills.

You don't give yourself enough credit, vincible. If starting location is all there is, lots of folks will be winning at Maso Gigantic.

I'm doing mine the hard way in my game. Pure military invasions. My pop score will undoubtably suffer as hordes of my pop are constantly being sent to the front lines. I may culture flip the Dregs though as they got Tir-Quan.
