The Prancing Pony

The welcome sight of a tavern greeted the weary traveler as he moved within distance of the town. Having traveled for many days, he longed for a cool mug of ale to slake his road-thirst.

As he approached the inn, he could see a sign of a fat pony rearing up on its hindlegs. The letters, THE PRANCING PONY, was painted in white.

The common room was large and rowdy. A bald and overweight innkeeper stood bent over the counter, whispering the latest gossip into the ears of a patron. On the benches were various folks, the local drunks for most part, but in corners of the taverns, he noticed there were groups drinking by themselves.

Setting himself down, the traveler handed a couple of coppers over to one of the bar wrenches for ale.

“Welcome to the Pony.” The traveler was mildly surprised to find a sprightly old man next to him, holding his gaze with keen eyes that belittled his obvious antiquity.

“Thank you, and whom do I have the pleasure of addressing?”

“Folks around here call me Ray and I do enjoy meeting up with newcomers to see if there is any assistance I could render.”

“That would be great, Ray. I would love to learn about the people who reside in these parts.”

“Ah, that’s a frequently asked question and one I’m well qualified to answer. There are a couple of factions here in Meta that you will want to watch out for.

The Pirates are currently dominant. Not the most refined of speakers but they are a jovial bunch, with a particular weakness for good drinks.

The Diplomats hold power in the Courts. Their courtiers are many but they don’t really mix with us common folks.

The Farmers are our working class. Hardworking and honest, they are however on occasion given over to overly elaborate festivals and celebrations.

The Galahs are a group of seafarers. They are also good trainers of livestock.

The Warlords are our warrior class. Their love for long campaigns leaves them frequently out of town.

The Spiders monopolise our merchant guilds. They are by far the most invertebrate bunch of traders you will ever see.

Far to the north, the Undead holds a death grip over the wastelands. I would caution you against traveling down that road.

There are many other smaller factions around, but I leave the details of those to Barley our bartender.

One of our tavern regulars, Gerakken the Spymaster, is also in the know with regards to many of the factions. So do buy him a drink if you want to find out more.”

“Thanks for the insights, Ray. But how about yourself, which faction do you belong to?”

Smiling to himself, the old man stood.

“Come round the Fellowship Halls tomorrow morning and I’ll show you around.”

Hey B,

Yeah. Funny thing was I thought it was a problem at my company's side as our internet server went down as well. But imagine my surprise when I got the server too busy message from Galciv. :)

I've started on my next game. A Maso Gigantic Rare. All of us got equal starts with the Dregs slightly better. Used tech trading to get on relative tech parity with the AIs and have decided on go on a military rush approach.

Basically, it is my belief that once you can take out a sizeable AI on Maso, you would have achieved the critical mass to win that game.

The Dregs declared war on me but I went ahead to strike at one other Incredible AI. Arceans are, IMO, one of the worst if not the worst defender out of the five AIs. Their fav orbital defenders are colony ships. LOL. They even send their battleaxes out to space.

Didn't really have the time to execute a proper Alpha Strike but managed to take out 2 planets at start. Another two were taken out through deft maneuvring of spd 6 Transports vs their spd 2 Death Knights.

Captured 4 out of their 8 planets and managed to secure peace. They still had hordes of Death Knights flying around but they were largely ineffective. Will be deploying my forces to take out their last 4 planets in an Alpha and if I succeed, the game is won.

Luckily, the Altarians have declared war on the Arceans as well and their Death Knights are helping to clear some of the Arcean ships. I still have to deal with the Dregs who are Strongest in both Military and Economy. Hopefully, they will tire of war and ask me for a peace. Currently, they wouldn't give me peace even if I offered them everything.

I had alot of fun with this game. I think my strategy of alternating between Maso and Crippling is sustaining my run for much longer than I've expected. :)

Just ignore him, Alex. Why bother with someone who always wants to have the last word?

Just kiddin' Cotal - it's just rare to see computer gamers talk about interests AWAY from the keyboard! And you'd better watch your spelling - I'm old enough to point out that 'canoodling' has a slightly different meaning than paddling in water! LOL

It is worth repeating an useful advice from Andreas Finn when playing at Maso.

It is to keep a cool head when you see yourself hopelessly outmatched in terms of military. It is still possible to win if you are able to take advantage of certain AI weaknesses.

In my game, the AI's battleaxes are 9/12 in orbit while my frigates are 6/4. Wouldn't have managed to capture any of its planets so easily if it had one battleaxe defending each planet. But knowing the military behaviour of the Arceans helped me to overcome them.

Just thought i'd drop in and say hi. I see the XP isn't out yet, sigh. I'll be patient :) I haven't played any recently, i've been waiting for the XP. Glad to see teh Fellowship is still kicking and in 1st, esp since GROSS has #2-#6 slots on the top players list. Anyway gotta run :)

Ray, you are amazing. That is so many levels above where I can ever dream of playing. LOL. Make sure you are taking notes so you can write "Ray's Gal Civ Strategy Guide for winning at crippling and maso levels". I, for one, would love to read it.

I wanted to share another way with everyone on how to bump your metaverse score if you are playing good on 1.05. Just set all the major AIs to pure evil and play good. Several of us have done this and the preliminary increase in mpts is roughly 20%. On a tiny, beginner map (EBZ's cranking method), I went from about 10k to over 12k. I don't know what this would do on a larger map. This may only be a 1.05 thing but I thought it was kind of interesting that playing good can get an extra bonus. FOTR is in first place for a few moments. Hang on . . . LOL.

Seriously Ray. Do you really think anyone with at least half a brain won't recognize this for what it is?

"I'm not talking to you." "Mikey don't talk to Stevie or you can't be my friend."

Once I graduated primary, I got over that kind of thing.

Wombat and I have both responded to your post elsewhere, B. Try resubmitting, it should clear up that anomalous score.

Problem with writing a guide is that the game changes so quickly so the strats may become obsolete quickly. I still prefer my current way of sharing on a real-time basis. I will probably write a more complete one when I retire from this game.

Hey Gibbie! Good of you to drop by.

Yeah, Brad mention that it will only be out in another couple of weeks so I guess early-mid Sep. Really hope to you see some of you (KseAli, redshift, etc) back here playing once the Xpack is out.

And you may want to revise your excellent strat guide to cater to the new Xpack features and changes. Wonder what happened to Ralegh?
