The Prancing Pony

The welcome sight of a tavern greeted the weary traveler as he moved within distance of the town. Having traveled for many days, he longed for a cool mug of ale to slake his road-thirst.

As he approached the inn, he could see a sign of a fat pony rearing up on its hindlegs. The letters, THE PRANCING PONY, was painted in white.

The common room was large and rowdy. A bald and overweight innkeeper stood bent over the counter, whispering the latest gossip into the ears of a patron. On the benches were various folks, the local drunks for most part, but in corners of the taverns, he noticed there were groups drinking by themselves.

Setting himself down, the traveler handed a couple of coppers over to one of the bar wrenches for ale.

“Welcome to the Pony.” The traveler was mildly surprised to find a sprightly old man next to him, holding his gaze with keen eyes that belittled his obvious antiquity.

“Thank you, and whom do I have the pleasure of addressing?”

“Folks around here call me Ray and I do enjoy meeting up with newcomers to see if there is any assistance I could render.”

“That would be great, Ray. I would love to learn about the people who reside in these parts.”

“Ah, that’s a frequently asked question and one I’m well qualified to answer. There are a couple of factions here in Meta that you will want to watch out for.

The Pirates are currently dominant. Not the most refined of speakers but they are a jovial bunch, with a particular weakness for good drinks.

The Diplomats hold power in the Courts. Their courtiers are many but they don’t really mix with us common folks.

The Farmers are our working class. Hardworking and honest, they are however on occasion given over to overly elaborate festivals and celebrations.

The Galahs are a group of seafarers. They are also good trainers of livestock.

The Warlords are our warrior class. Their love for long campaigns leaves them frequently out of town.

The Spiders monopolise our merchant guilds. They are by far the most invertebrate bunch of traders you will ever see.

Far to the north, the Undead holds a death grip over the wastelands. I would caution you against traveling down that road.

There are many other smaller factions around, but I leave the details of those to Barley our bartender.

One of our tavern regulars, Gerakken the Spymaster, is also in the know with regards to many of the factions. So do buy him a drink if you want to find out more.”

“Thanks for the insights, Ray. But how about yourself, which faction do you belong to?”

Smiling to himself, the old man stood.

“Come round the Fellowship Halls tomorrow morning and I’ll show you around.”

Have you all read the History of Galciv by Frogboy on the front page?

The Drengin are later discovered to be led by an Arnor (beings of immense power) but the humans are able to counter this by the lucky finding of an artifact called the Orb of power, an ancient weapon used by one of the Mithrilar, the guardians of the universe, who disappeared eons ago.
End of quote

The complex interactions between humans and the alien civilizations combined with the presence of beings that are seemingly magical (such as the Arnor along with the Altarians who are somehow related to humans as they seem have nearly identical DNA) provides a rich universe to play in.
End of quote

Now I know it was the Mithrilar that sent me down to Middle Earth to protect the Ring of Power. The Ring is probably another of their artifacts, other than the Orb.

He also made references to magic so our empire fits right in as well. :D

It would be nice to tailor our empire background to gel with Frogboy's Galciv universe. If he could share more of his stories with us, we could do weave our sub-plots around his main character and story.

Heh... I don’t really know any Polish. ;) I sure hope that translation program works. If I said something like “you’re great-grandfather was a coffee table”, sorry! In addition to some attached files for Paul, I’ll be sitting on IM for a while. :)

Please, please don't try and decifer post 1300! I know some of you might try . . . it's meaningless. I just wanted to get post 1300. I got busy and I noticed (when I came back) I couldn't edit it.

That post by Frogboy was very interesting indeed! He's gotta be careful though, it would be so easy for his insights to be seen as spoilers. I think I'll wait for the books, I hope he gets the time to write them sooner than later.

Kit I can't get Messenger here at work (unfortunately) . . . but we'll ketchup.

We're still here. A few of us are taking sabbaticals but many are still posting.

Possibly the illusion is caused by the number of GROSS posts in this thread recently. :)

Thanks, Ray! Finally finished my "experiment" which actually took a lot longer than I wanted it to. For only a few thousand more points, I think I'll stick to my original playbook...

I will admit, however, that completely dominating the AI was kinda fun. Keeping them financially and militarily bankrupt was the high point of the game. Oh, the experiment was nothing more than trying to completely decimate the AIs by tech whoring and culture bombing. I know this is pretty standard fare for everybody else, but my strat usually isn't so non-military. It's actually kind of boring building culture bomb SBs and waiting for planets to flip. I'd rather send in a fleet of transports and laugh while my troops march through the capitol. :D

Also got every tech, every Achievement, every Wonder and every trade good (except Ultra Spices >:( ) but I thought that would make a bit more of a difference in score than it did. All-in-all, an interesting game, but not one I'll repeat anytime soon.

Crap, I'm already out of the Top 50. Oh, well...need to submit another game! :D

Report from my game.

The Dregs are at war with everyone except the Arceans who just took a beating from me. The Tors gave me 3 Death Knights to aid me. :) Only 1 made it back to my space, 2 were destroyed enroute by Dreg Dreads. :(

I've realised that AIs send ships with at least Warm relations. No need to enter into messy alliances.

The Arceans joined the war against the Dregs so I was temporarily undecided whether to Alpha them or have them jointly fighting the most powerful Dregs. Decided to wipe them out.

The Arcs must have read my derisive words about their defense here because they decided to guard 2 of their remaining 4 planets with 12/15 battleaxes. :sniff!:
Captured the other two planets but was staring at 2 guarded planets while my puny attack fleet of corvettes and frigates waiting helplessly outside. Tried the bait tactic. I left my transports undefended outside their planets and sure enough their battleaxes charged out for the kill. LOL Arcs are history.

Turned my attention on the Dregs. Constant waring has not weakened them and they refuse to make peace. Their battle transports have finally reached the gates of my planet and they have Dreads in support. At defense 21, those B.Transports require a Dread of mine to take out! So I bit the bullet and surrendered a system for peace. Chose one in an old Arcean sector that has 2 other systems. Destroyed the cultural improvements in the gift planet. Luckily, I did not scrap the cultural centres in the other 2 captured Arcean planets earlier and with 4 untapped influence resources at my disposal, I'm confident I will be able to flip this planet back soon.

This game should be in the bag. :)

Greets friends,

Been away for a while, lots to do IRL and my MMORPG addiction keeps me busy also, but it's nice to see friendly faces again. Submitted a couple games and played around a bit here in the last couple days. It's good to see the Fellowship doing so well. This thread has advanced some 900ish posts since I last read it........geesh.(don't think I can find the time to read all of em lol)

Keep up all the good fun, and know that the Prophet lurks at the edges of society as always ;)
