The Prancing Pony

The welcome sight of a tavern greeted the weary traveler as he moved within distance of the town. Having traveled for many days, he longed for a cool mug of ale to slake his road-thirst.

As he approached the inn, he could see a sign of a fat pony rearing up on its hindlegs. The letters, THE PRANCING PONY, was painted in white.

The common room was large and rowdy. A bald and overweight innkeeper stood bent over the counter, whispering the latest gossip into the ears of a patron. On the benches were various folks, the local drunks for most part, but in corners of the taverns, he noticed there were groups drinking by themselves.

Setting himself down, the traveler handed a couple of coppers over to one of the bar wrenches for ale.

“Welcome to the Pony.” The traveler was mildly surprised to find a sprightly old man next to him, holding his gaze with keen eyes that belittled his obvious antiquity.

“Thank you, and whom do I have the pleasure of addressing?”

“Folks around here call me Ray and I do enjoy meeting up with newcomers to see if there is any assistance I could render.”

“That would be great, Ray. I would love to learn about the people who reside in these parts.”

“Ah, that’s a frequently asked question and one I’m well qualified to answer. There are a couple of factions here in Meta that you will want to watch out for.

The Pirates are currently dominant. Not the most refined of speakers but they are a jovial bunch, with a particular weakness for good drinks.

The Diplomats hold power in the Courts. Their courtiers are many but they don’t really mix with us common folks.

The Farmers are our working class. Hardworking and honest, they are however on occasion given over to overly elaborate festivals and celebrations.

The Galahs are a group of seafarers. They are also good trainers of livestock.

The Warlords are our warrior class. Their love for long campaigns leaves them frequently out of town.

The Spiders monopolise our merchant guilds. They are by far the most invertebrate bunch of traders you will ever see.

Far to the north, the Undead holds a death grip over the wastelands. I would caution you against traveling down that road.

There are many other smaller factions around, but I leave the details of those to Barley our bartender.

One of our tavern regulars, Gerakken the Spymaster, is also in the know with regards to many of the factions. So do buy him a drink if you want to find out more.”

“Thanks for the insights, Ray. But how about yourself, which faction do you belong to?”

Smiling to himself, the old man stood.

“Come round the Fellowship Halls tomorrow morning and I’ll show you around.”

I've calculated that I would break 400k if I play another 7 Maso Gigantics over the next 3 weeks.

Hopefully that would give me my Fleet Admiral.

Cotal-bot can take the top spot from me at her lesuire. There is no way an old bot like myself can keep up with her work-rate.

She can have the gold, I'm gunning for Fleet Admiral now.

I'm starting my second Gigantic game ever. Now that I have a computer that can handle it, hopefully it will be more fun than the first.

Ray, do you research Stellar Cartography on Huge and Gigantic maps?

I do research it but usually after my colonization phase. It's more for convienence to see where all the AI worlds are rather than manually using the diplomacy screen. Despite what I said in my Galciv blog about AIs buying this tech, it's value is really low both for trading and as a gift.

Damn it vincible! I INSIST you stay on small maps...at least give me someone to fence with for a little longer! Ah well...the maso effect rules - and congrats on your fine play lately!

Ray - 7 maso gigantics...should take about three days, no? ;p LOL

Raybot doesn't have Cotalbot's game-acceleration routines.

The only consolation Raybot has is that in the movies, the old models usually terminate the newer ones. ;)

Anyone wants to post some not-so-dry stuff in our thread?

How about some "The AI is cheating at Maso" posts? Those are always good for a laugh.

Ok, I redid the numbers and found that I could get up to 400k if I submitted a Maso Gig every other day for 2 weeks. Unlikely that I will be playing so hard though.

Shocking! I will never play another Stardock game for as long as I live.

Seriously, there is a bug in the game which allows AIs of any morality to build trade centres once you research The Better Way. So feel free to sell or trade that tech once you get it.

To be totally honest (re Cotal crankermania LoL) I'm just trying to get the ANZAC Reps into third place, unfortunately our players aren't as obcessive about this as I am . . . hehe . . .

The Mid-Westerners also seem way to organized (a very nice site I must say!) for us ANZAC Reps to be a real threat (bakkas maths/statistics seems to support the hypothesis) . . . :notsure:

Divide by the square root of the number of games over the past 30 days. You've submitted 7 games so it should be somewhere between 1/2 and 1/3 of the score...

Oh dear . . . that explains why I can't seem to make as much headway as I would like . . . mmm . . . interesting, a mathimatical anti-cranking formula . . . So what would the optimum rate of submission be per/month?

"One" big one i.e. the square root of 1 is one . . . ? LOL

I KNEW IT! I KNEW IT! A BUG IN THE GAME!!! [Wombat runs screaming from his computer cave....]

Cotal: I am NOT the expert, but I doubt there is an 'optimum' rate of submission; I think the issue is to optimise the QUALITY of your submissions, i.e. make each individual game score as high as possible...you know how to do that, dont you? Hmm? ;p ;)

I've just downloaded the Warlords IV demo. I have to say the graphics are really nice. Though the AI is certainly most important factor for me, the graphics of a game shouldn't be that far off the market. I'm thinking about SD's fantasy TBS game - Elemental as I say this.

Why don't you just use the minimap "population" option?

The game's not going so well, if that's any consolation :)

That's true. I always forget about that. Most of the time I just leave that off.

Interesting. I have it on as my default. It helps keep you informed when another major is taking a beating.

I prefer the production capacity view, since the population view generally turns into a big blobby mess of colors after a good bit into the game... but I can still use it to see all of an enemy's planets as soon as I meet them (without having to find them firsthand) :D
Reply #2123 Top
It's one of the options for the minimap view. It's the button next to the "show autopilot" option, under the minimap, if I recall correctly. It shows circles around the settled stars on the minimap, with the size of the circle representing the amount of population on the star system.

Thank you. Oh that view. It can be helpful sometimes to me when I am wondering where to direct a freigher especially on huge & gigantic maps where I tend to get a little lost and disoriented on the standard view.

Well, these forums are fun but I suppose I should go to my medium maso and see if I can pull it out of the frying pan. Colonizing more planets and using scouts is different than tiny/small and delays tech research. Longer to meet aliens means longer and less effective tech swapping in the beginning game. Plus my start wasn't so hot and I am trapped in a single sector by the strongest AI. By this time on small, I already had all the aliens at war with each other using amber & green techs. Let's hope I score a couple of trade good to use for bribery purposes in the near future but the AI already beat me to gal stock exchange and grav acc. Oh well . . . keeping it fun. Talk to you later.
