The Prancing Pony

The welcome sight of a tavern greeted the weary traveler as he moved within distance of the town. Having traveled for many days, he longed for a cool mug of ale to slake his road-thirst.

As he approached the inn, he could see a sign of a fat pony rearing up on its hindlegs. The letters, THE PRANCING PONY, was painted in white.

The common room was large and rowdy. A bald and overweight innkeeper stood bent over the counter, whispering the latest gossip into the ears of a patron. On the benches were various folks, the local drunks for most part, but in corners of the taverns, he noticed there were groups drinking by themselves.

Setting himself down, the traveler handed a couple of coppers over to one of the bar wrenches for ale.

“Welcome to the Pony.” The traveler was mildly surprised to find a sprightly old man next to him, holding his gaze with keen eyes that belittled his obvious antiquity.

“Thank you, and whom do I have the pleasure of addressing?”

“Folks around here call me Ray and I do enjoy meeting up with newcomers to see if there is any assistance I could render.”

“That would be great, Ray. I would love to learn about the people who reside in these parts.”

“Ah, that’s a frequently asked question and one I’m well qualified to answer. There are a couple of factions here in Meta that you will want to watch out for.

The Pirates are currently dominant. Not the most refined of speakers but they are a jovial bunch, with a particular weakness for good drinks.

The Diplomats hold power in the Courts. Their courtiers are many but they don’t really mix with us common folks.

The Farmers are our working class. Hardworking and honest, they are however on occasion given over to overly elaborate festivals and celebrations.

The Galahs are a group of seafarers. They are also good trainers of livestock.

The Warlords are our warrior class. Their love for long campaigns leaves them frequently out of town.

The Spiders monopolise our merchant guilds. They are by far the most invertebrate bunch of traders you will ever see.

Far to the north, the Undead holds a death grip over the wastelands. I would caution you against traveling down that road.

There are many other smaller factions around, but I leave the details of those to Barley our bartender.

One of our tavern regulars, Gerakken the Spymaster, is also in the know with regards to many of the factions. So do buy him a drink if you want to find out more.”

“Thanks for the insights, Ray. But how about yourself, which faction do you belong to?”

Smiling to himself, the old man stood.

“Come round the Fellowship Halls tomorrow morning and I’ll show you around.”

Random thought: does anyone else think it would be interesting to have empire rankings sortable by morality, just like the player rankings? So we might see the Fellowship first overall, but GROSS as the top empire in terms of Evil games and Anzacs as top empire in terms of Good games, or something. Might add more competition to a Metaverse that has been pretty stable, and would give the smaller empires something to shoot for. For example Evil Empire, which is a really neat concept, is too small to compete on total ranking, but they might be able to make a run at the top spot on an evil-only board.

And a big welcome back to FriendJosh!

Okay, how do people catch these? Ray always seems to know immediately when someone joins. Now you do too.

:D

Actually, I check the empire page quite often. I just don't want someone to join and feel like I am ignoring them by not updating the Roster page. Yes, I'm probably a bit obsessive... LOL

Ray is connected to the website via wires and serial connections, so he instantly knows what's going on at all times. It's part of him being the actual leader of the Matrix...

Hey guys,

We've gotten away from story writing around here lately. What does everyone think of a Round Robin story on the War of the Worlds site? I'm going to write a little something and then if somebody wants to, write a chapter. The WotW site is at this http://idle.thehueys.com/wotw/index.php

I've actually been mentally composing a continuation to the Evil Ray story while I work.

It's probably obvious from all my posts that I'm not getting much actual work done today :(

I'm not sure I'd enjoy writing in the world of the War of the Worlds.

WotW isn't too bad. It's pretty easy to find what you want.

I started a new story there, called Alliance of Evil. vincible, hope you don't mind, I just included you in it. I hadn't seen your post. If you want, I can edit it to be somebody else. Just let me know.

My start is pretty vague, so whoever wants to jump in can go wherever they want to. I know Downie isn't crazy about the space aspect of our stories, so if he wants to bring it down to land, that's fine. And different contributors can have different action going on at the same time, so don't feel confined to following what somebody else writes.

I certainly don't mind being included and I'll read your story when I get a chance. I'm just not sure that I would enjoy writing for it, since the setting doesn't appeal to my imagination all that much--but you never know, sometimes ideas come from surprising sources and at surprising times.

How much of the stuff there have you read? Do you have any favorites?

Okay Theoden, just read your story. Seeds of inspiration are germinating in my mind.

Could someone give a super-quick run-down of the War of the Worlds and the Fellowship's place in it? I read the first fifteen posts in the WotW thread then lost interest in it.

Hello All,

Just to let you know I have been trying to read the 2135 previous posts. Way too much history which leave the eyes dry and red by the end of the night.

I started with an Avalon Hill game in 1970 and have yet to find a shooter or real time game which can compete with a well organized and thought out Turn based game like GalCiv.

I hope to be a visable member of the Fellowship on submissions and with my two cents.

So stop by my forest sometime and visit the trees. They are beatiful this time of year. Some of them even talk!! I don't understand a word they say, but I know they are talking about me!!!!

Trying to read the entire Fellowship thread is not recommended unless you are a true Masochist, Celeborne. :) Besides, some posts will only make sense if read in the context of other empire posts and the circumstances and happenings at that point in time.

You are in good company here. Most if not of us here prefer TBS to RTS or FPS games.

Do join our discussions and feel free to pose questions of your own. :)

Greetings, Ringfolk. Your friendly neighborhood Jedi here. Or one of them, anyway.

I've been busy with RL for the past few days, so I thought I'd drop by and pay a few respects:

Theoden: I'm glad that your family seems to be healthy and well, considering the circumstances. Your contributions to the Metaverse and the Review aside, you've always been something of a moral conscience around here, and you have my sympathies for all you're dealing with.

To all in the Fellowship: Congrats on your latest milestone. What was it again - 2 million? 3? Hard to keep current on 1.10 scoring...

Ray: Sources indicate that Brad caught wind of your plot to stop submitting games at your next promotion. The absence of the expected promotion threshold, I'm sure, is just a coincidence... :D Personally, I think you and Cotal should form a 2-person empire and see how far you can get!

May the Force be with y'all!

Thanks for all the kind words everyone! I appreciate everyone's concern. This is what makes this forum so special. My wife is doing a little better now, though she still has some soreness and bruises. My mother-in-law went back to the doctor yesterday as she is still in a lot of pain, and it doesn't seem to be improving. My baby daughter caught a little cold from being in the cool night air the night of the accident (a little unseasonably cool in Virginia these days), but otherwise she is fine.

vincible, the story I wrote isn't connected to the WotW story, so we're not confined by what's in it for our Roundrobin story. I have read many of Wombat's submissions and I recommend them and the History of the Jedi Republic for good reading.

Celeborne: The Balrog (this thread) is much too large to attempt to completely read. Just jump right into the conversations and join the madness! :D

-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

I'm sort of taking a break for now. I've been trying to spend some time with my family so it may be a few days till you see a submission from me. I'm probably going to make another feeble attempt at Maso next game.

I don't really have a problem. I just have difficulty reconciling the intergalactic setting and the Tolkienesque theme into a logically consistent whole. Also, I've never really kept up with the doings of the other empires, so I don't feel able to write about them. But I'm not ruling out a space story at some point.

Having scored a depressingly low 8480 metaverse score for a Masochistic game, I thought maybe I could exceed that in my next game and get an unbeatable record low. So I tried playing in a manner calculated to score as little as possible; for example, I didn't build any wonders or trade goods, and didn't research techs except for those that seemed absolutely neccessary. I ended up in a bizarre endgame where I had one enemy who had a couple of planets, while I had the rest of the galaxy, but I was bankrupt and had no ships while he had loads of dreadnaughts and gravity accelerators and superior technology. Missiles are a lot more effective when you're faster than your opponent than they are when you're slower... I only won by keeping my spend rate low until I could afford to bribe him for peace, and then betraying him.
Oddly, I scored quite well this time. I have no idea why.

Madness it does seem to be. I do not know if I will ever be able to join the writing, but I might give it a try later. I have the same issue of combining Middle Earth with Space, it would get confusing. Just image the surprise of the elf looking out a window and finding the stars have more worlds around them.

Maybe a bit confusing.

Until Middle Earth On Line comes out, I think this will be the best place to learn about these types of forums.

Thanks all for the welcome and I hope that your family gets better soon Theoden.

The one aspect of GalCiv I really enjoy is radomizing the races. I find it makes it more intersting for me NOT to know how they will react to me. Right now I am in the middle stages of a game where I went pure evil. Being without luck, there is one other evil race with only three planets, in a huge playing field and the other all hate me.

I won the race to battleships so I beat off the first mass attack and I am now preparing to take out one of the weaker races. I think once that is done, I will just have to beat the rest into submission. Long and drawn out, but fun in its own rights. Nothing can reach out a touch someone like an Elf Archer!!!

Ray on small question, can I place a bio of Celebrone on the Fellowship page? If yes how do I do this, I have not found a link for that yet.

Talk with you all later.

Hi Celeborne!

If you want to post your bio, just put it here in this thread and Theoden will add it to the Fellowship page.

Fellowship of the Ring is the first empire to have two admirals. Ray was the first admiral in the entire metaverse and I got my stripes today on a 40k maso large. If vincible plays a lot of tiny maso (for game numbers and points) we may soon have a third admiral. I will only have the 3rd place bronze medal for a short time until Solitar and Jaws submit another game. It took about two weeks of study and dedicated playing to go from large tough to large maso. If anyone wishes help with his/her game, Ray and others of us will be happy to help. Thanks to everyone for all of your help. Now it is time to let the tendonitis in my right wrist cool off and watch some football this weekend. :)

Playing a very interesting Maso Gig game.

Have an average start with the Arceans right next to me. They had 10 systems and I spent most of my early game in a sea of yellow influence. In this game, I went for Stellar Carto in the colonization phase to find out where the yellow stars were in areas out of my reach.

I knew I had to rush the Arcs and I took four of their systems quite early. Managed to secure peace by offering up quite a few techs.

Took another 2 systems quite a while later when they declared war on me. Then I had a very lucky UP event which enforced a galactic ceasfire just when I needed it to reposition more transports nearer to their systems.

I expect that this game will be won once the Arcs are destroyed.

Fun. :) Amazing that I still enjoy the game after 6 months of playing. If not for Maso level, I would certainly have stopped playing months back.
