The Prancing Pony

The welcome sight of a tavern greeted the weary traveler as he moved within distance of the town. Having traveled for many days, he longed for a cool mug of ale to slake his road-thirst.

As he approached the inn, he could see a sign of a fat pony rearing up on its hindlegs. The letters, THE PRANCING PONY, was painted in white.

The common room was large and rowdy. A bald and overweight innkeeper stood bent over the counter, whispering the latest gossip into the ears of a patron. On the benches were various folks, the local drunks for most part, but in corners of the taverns, he noticed there were groups drinking by themselves.

Setting himself down, the traveler handed a couple of coppers over to one of the bar wrenches for ale.

“Welcome to the Pony.” The traveler was mildly surprised to find a sprightly old man next to him, holding his gaze with keen eyes that belittled his obvious antiquity.

“Thank you, and whom do I have the pleasure of addressing?”

“Folks around here call me Ray and I do enjoy meeting up with newcomers to see if there is any assistance I could render.”

“That would be great, Ray. I would love to learn about the people who reside in these parts.”

“Ah, that’s a frequently asked question and one I’m well qualified to answer. There are a couple of factions here in Meta that you will want to watch out for.

The Pirates are currently dominant. Not the most refined of speakers but they are a jovial bunch, with a particular weakness for good drinks.

The Diplomats hold power in the Courts. Their courtiers are many but they don’t really mix with us common folks.

The Farmers are our working class. Hardworking and honest, they are however on occasion given over to overly elaborate festivals and celebrations.

The Galahs are a group of seafarers. They are also good trainers of livestock.

The Warlords are our warrior class. Their love for long campaigns leaves them frequently out of town.

The Spiders monopolise our merchant guilds. They are by far the most invertebrate bunch of traders you will ever see.

Far to the north, the Undead holds a death grip over the wastelands. I would caution you against traveling down that road.

There are many other smaller factions around, but I leave the details of those to Barley our bartender.

One of our tavern regulars, Gerakken the Spymaster, is also in the know with regards to many of the factions. So do buy him a drink if you want to find out more.”

“Thanks for the insights, Ray. But how about yourself, which faction do you belong to?”

Smiling to himself, the old man stood.

“Come round the Fellowship Halls tomorrow morning and I’ll show you around.”

EBZ Its a given I'm sure, a legend takes time to grow and cast thier dark shadow over the entire galaxy! ;)

Congrats to everyone for everything useful or at least not counter productive they have ever done! (SUch a statement seems a bit broad but at least I don't include the risk of forgeting who to praise!)

Ohh were winning again! Yeay!

FINALLY!!!

I have returned to the top 25! ah, i remember my stint in the top 10, low these many versions ago.

Also (not to be boastful, but I'm going to brag), I broke into the top 5 evil player board - up until today GROSS held all 5 slots, but now I am 5th (for at least a few hours until KitWarrior submits).

Also, I am the top rated evil player in the fellowship! (sorry Ray)

bwahahahahahahaha!

Just for fun, I added a poll to our website. Just interested in everybody's answer.

GJ Josh, we need more people who understand Evil.

Man, I stop playing for a week and sink six places =(

I see Ray has been making that Ring work a bit. Why stop at 200,000? Go for an even quarter million. Give GROSS a real target to shoot at. :)

Oh, and for your poll, Theoden, I am leaning toward tough myself. I'll pick a victim empire or two later over the weekend and see what they play.

vincible,

The poll might not be viewable with Netscape... :notsure:

The question is what difficulty does everyone like to play? I was just interested in seeing the feedback. :)

The Fellowship and GROSS numbers are already buried in this thread somewhere, but I will throw in the Jedi Republic's preferred difficulties before I run along. Why them, one may ask? Because they are in the top 10, quite active and have a decent number of people to check:

Cakewalk : 1
Easy : 1
Simple : 3
Beginner : 5
Normal : 5
Challenging: 0
Tough : 0
Painful : 4
Crippling : 1
Masochistic: 0

Out of the 20 players with score, it looks like a straight down the middle empire from the perspective of those who play normal and above and those who prefer below normal. 10 to 10.

Josh is celebrating his achievement when all of a sudden. JOSH HEADS UP!!!
Josh looks up. EeeeeeeeeeeekaBOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!!!!!!! What was that? A Pontius Pie Bomb. Bananna cream. From 18 to 5 in one game. Yeah baby. HEHE. G.R.O.S.S. has all the top 5 on evil once again!!
Go Kit Go!!! :)

Josh: "Dang Pirates. Although this bananna cream is delicious. Why do these people shout heads up when they really mean heads down and out of the way?"

Congrats on your top25.

Good job FriendJosh! :CONGRAT:

I'll be stepping up evil submissions soon so watch your back. :D

Well, I'm half way though to 200k.

Just completed a Crippling Gigantic. I had probably one of the best if not the best start for a Gigantic map. Managed to get (including 13-14s) 220 colonies. I basically just needed to put all my money into economy and research and the aliens just fell over.

And FriendJosh, I'm right behind you now in terms of evilness. :)

Wow Ray your hootin along there, you might even wrap 200k up by the end of the weekend at this rate. I wonder if your Godd Icon will Turn Neutral soon?

Great Work!

H50, did you try resubmitting that anomalous? I just got an anomalous without any mods and then when I reloaded, refinished, and resubmitted the correct score of 12000 showed up (like there had never been a problem). Just a reminder to everyone to resubmit the anomalous if there is a glitch.

Ray, you are amazing. Have you ever organized your strategy tips into a Word Document or something that could be posted on a web page? Thanks for all of your help and enthusiasm.

A question for the Spymaster. What seems to be the most common difficulty level played?
End of quote

I can finally answer that question, vincible. After developing a rating system and examing 520 player records from the current 13 top empires, I have 422 valid player records I can compare. That should represent a real nice sample percentage of the Meta. This system measures preferred difficulty levels based on recent games, not best levels ever played. Full break down by empires and documentation on the method used will appear on another thread sometime later after I recover. Afterall, Spymaster training can be brutal! Here the number of players per difficulty level:

Cakewalk :17
Easy :17
Simple :50
Beginner :70
Normal :92
Challenging:52
Tough :29
Painful :54
Crippling :35
Masochistic: 6
Toughness rating: average of 5.36 if cake is rated 1, easy 2, all the way up to maso being 10. Normal is 5.

Very interesting Spymaster!

It is almost a bell curve as we would expect. Not many Tough players as that's a combination of Bright and Intelligent. I guess most folks play pure.

Can I ask who are the six Maso players?

Not possible even if I play 24hrs a day cause I probably need another 8-10 20k games to cross 200k.

I've got alot of good games so wouldn't be that quick.

I should, shouldn't I? I would certainly consider doing that sometime.

Ray,

Nice job churning 'em out. And on cracking 150K.

The milestones, toppling as prairie grass in the wind of a gathering storm...well, that's probably more of an MWC metaphor, but congrats anyway. :D

If you do, we'd be happy to have a link to it on the JR website. Next to EBZ's guide, that would give a player an interesting set of strategies to choose from based on their difficulty level.

Evil seems to score about 1.5 times good based on my recent games....
