The Prancing Pony

The welcome sight of a tavern greeted the weary traveler as he moved within distance of the town. Having traveled for many days, he longed for a cool mug of ale to slake his road-thirst.

As he approached the inn, he could see a sign of a fat pony rearing up on its hindlegs. The letters, THE PRANCING PONY, was painted in white.

The common room was large and rowdy. A bald and overweight innkeeper stood bent over the counter, whispering the latest gossip into the ears of a patron. On the benches were various folks, the local drunks for most part, but in corners of the taverns, he noticed there were groups drinking by themselves.

Setting himself down, the traveler handed a couple of coppers over to one of the bar wrenches for ale.

“Welcome to the Pony.” The traveler was mildly surprised to find a sprightly old man next to him, holding his gaze with keen eyes that belittled his obvious antiquity.

“Thank you, and whom do I have the pleasure of addressing?”

“Folks around here call me Ray and I do enjoy meeting up with newcomers to see if there is any assistance I could render.”

“That would be great, Ray. I would love to learn about the people who reside in these parts.”

“Ah, that’s a frequently asked question and one I’m well qualified to answer. There are a couple of factions here in Meta that you will want to watch out for.

The Pirates are currently dominant. Not the most refined of speakers but they are a jovial bunch, with a particular weakness for good drinks.

The Diplomats hold power in the Courts. Their courtiers are many but they don’t really mix with us common folks.

The Farmers are our working class. Hardworking and honest, they are however on occasion given over to overly elaborate festivals and celebrations.

The Galahs are a group of seafarers. They are also good trainers of livestock.

The Warlords are our warrior class. Their love for long campaigns leaves them frequently out of town.

The Spiders monopolise our merchant guilds. They are by far the most invertebrate bunch of traders you will ever see.

Far to the north, the Undead holds a death grip over the wastelands. I would caution you against traveling down that road.

There are many other smaller factions around, but I leave the details of those to Barley our bartender.

One of our tavern regulars, Gerakken the Spymaster, is also in the know with regards to many of the factions. So do buy him a drink if you want to find out more.”

“Thanks for the insights, Ray. But how about yourself, which faction do you belong to?”

Smiling to himself, the old man stood.

“Come round the Fellowship Halls tomorrow morning and I’ll show you around.”

ToEE has got some potential. I am in Seattle, U.S.A so I had no problem getting it as soon as it came out. I never did give NWN a try, so adjusting to the "wheel of choices" is interesting. All the actions on the spiraling outward menu was tricky for me. AI pathfinding is a bit off, and some of the quests and encounters are buggy. The play is pretty good and the early fights seem balanced decently. I like how your alignment and your skills affect the conversation choices with NPCs. The game graphics are a bit on the dark side, so it has been hard for me to see some of the things on the screen. There isn't a gamma correction or lightness option within the game to brighten things, and adjusting my monitor didn't seem to alter it, so it is hard to see things. But all in all, it is a fun diversion. It has kept me away from GalCiv for several days now and I'm sliding in the standings because of it... ;)

Hey Ray by the way, I understand how you feel, sometimes gets hardship, but a good advice from my heart would be for you to take a nice well deserve vacations, how about 3 months in a Caribbean resort without internet access and without computer. I think that would be the only way to get closer in the scoreborad to such a good player.

I tried to send you some Torians girls but you didn't answer the door bell. So the vacation package sounds better.
End of quote

I probably wouldn't be going to the Caribbean but I'm almost about made up my mind to retire from Metaverse competition once I obtain the Fleet Admiral rank, which I hope is at 300,000pts.

I would likely still be active in the forum though. I think this would be the best option.

Anybody else feeling weary about all these scoring discussions? I am. Yesterday, I was seriously considering wandering off this game and forum to something else because all these bad vibes were starting to get to me.
End of quote

It was bad. I had to break from Gal Civ and go watch football. Usually, I come to the forum to get pumped up to play more Gal Civ but you are right Ray, it was a downer. So to prevent this from happening again, Ray and vincible, let's get two things out in the open.

1. Vincible. In my opinion, the Gal Civ Cranking Guide is a good tutorial walk-through for beginners. It is helpful when learning how to adjust the slider and what tech yields which trade goods, wonders, etc. It not only took a lot of work to put it together but to put it on a website and to pay for the space, etc. I think it is like "pre-season" or "warm-up" and after cranking for a while, most move on. I also run a small website and it definitly took EBZ some extra effort to do that. Any Gal Civ player who puts together a walk-through tutorial on a website for any level should get thanks and not a "it's cheese" comment. It is double-bad for a maso player to rail on a beginner or a beginner tutorial. That pushes my button and will do so in the future.

2. Ray. We need one set of rules for everyone. Instead of a "take it or leave it" attitude for 1.05 metaverse scoring we had active lobbying to raise metaverse scores per game for the highest difficulty levels/best players and finally that happened with 1.1 (or 1.092 for Drengin.net subscribers). Now, when some people don't like the changes from 1.05 to 1.10 and lobby for some changes; it is an unfair double-standard, especially for any maso player (a major benefactor of 1.10) to say, "take it or leave it you non-maso players".

Those are the two things that really bummed me out this weekend and tarnished the Fellowship of the Ring empire for me. Hopefully we can prevent railing on newbies and promoting double-standards in the future but I couldn't keep quiet any longer. To continue . . .

We as players do not need to "take it or leave it" because we can change how we respond. We can help each other get better through the Internet. Some wonderful folks even put up websites including the fantastic Orion guide. If we are smart, we actually want the same thing Stardock wants, which is lots of people interested in, buying, and playing Gal Civ so we get Gal Civ 2, etc. It is best for ALL of us if we are "user-friendly", particularly to newbies.

I am sorry if your feelings were hurt Ray, but simply referring a newbie or frustrated player to a thread that is over 100 posts long for info is not the best we can do and we don't need to "take or leave" that part either. Many game manuals present a tutorial or walk-through to augment the pages of instructions or tips. I requested a walk-through tutorial because it is easier for many to learn by following a walk-through tutorial. Since 1.1 arrived, walk-through tutorials of Maso have been posted by Killa Koalla, Jeff DeSilva, PontiousBruinPilate, and others including now by you (in < 1 week!!!). I think it is great. Thank you all very much including Ray and others who have done this. IMO, this sharing will help more people play longer and is one reason the forum is so popular. Ray, I hope you did the walk-through tutorial because you really dig Gal Civ and not because of a guilt-trip. Like you have told me in the past, beware of burn-out. It is better to take a break and return than burn out.

It is often difficult to be articulate and accurate using written language, especially for a science nerd like me. But, while not rabid, I am concerned the scoring changes in 1.1 are a bit too generous to maso games and that they may intimidate those who are new to Gal Civ and the metaverse. It took me a while to warm up to the metaverse and others too have commented how cool it is to get those little medals in the beginning for bascially submitting games (sort of silly but it is a fun hook to get people to play more). We who have played a while should want to share with newbies because it can be fuel for newbies to hang in there and become regular participants in Gal Civ, encourage more Stardock games, etc. My opinion (not shared by all) is I would like to see a metaverse scoring tweak that is between 1.05 and 1.10 so that maso could be rewarded but no one would ever say, "Darn, I upgraded to 1.1 and my scores went down".

As someone interested in the Gal Civ community (and wants Stardock to make more cool stuff), I say to Stardock, "Hey, was that big of a scoring change really necessary?" and "Did you have to nerf the lightweights and newbies while boosting the super players?" but of course, as you say Ray, the metaverse scoring calculations are up to Frogboy.

What is up to us is whether we choose to work together to try to be most helpful to those who are still new to Gal Civ. The scoring changes are unlikely to intimidate those of us who have played for months or played computer games for many years. And, we are probably never going to all agree on how much of a tweak Stardock should have done so let's just hope it all works out. We will either keep playing or we won't. It's just a game.

On a personal note, I moved up from tough to painful today without problems (the Yor are a non-entity again LOL). I will play a crippling soon and if that goes ok will try maso. We will see how things shake out and I will keep playing as long as it is fun. Maybe some more maso players will step up to help team-Tolkein while others of us re-tool the skills. No matter what happens, this has been a really great game that has had a short cut on my desktop for over 3 months so I am quite pleased with my Gal Civ experience including game, metaverse, and forum. Thank you Stardock. Thank you Ray, vincible, H50, Theoden and other Ring-heads. Thank you all contributing forum members including empire members and free agents. OK, time to go watch Monday Night Football. :)

Thanks for the post, Rick. To be honest, your post in Black Shade's thread affected me the most, not the ones from Pontius.

I did the walkthrough because you asked for one. I do see your point that the Maso Strat post is not user friendly. Hopefully, newbies will find my Galciv blog more concise, structured and helpful.

All these arguments about scoring is the key reason why I'm going to retire from the Metaverse soon. I would still try my best to help newbies in the forum whether they have issues with the game, scoring or technical problems. :)

Rick, I agree with everything you said here. I really truly have nothing against EBZ. EBZ wrote a guide that helped many people enjoy the game more, and he should be applauded for that.

I have nothing against EBZ for "breaking" the Metaverse. Scoring is arbitrary and is not a measure of skill or dedication no matter what Stardock says, so I really don't care if someone finds a way to break the system because it's inherently unfixable. I think my record shows that I don't take Metaverse competition at all seriously--if I did, I would have been playing very different games in 1.05.

I had hoped to make it clear in that thread that what spawned my original one-line comment was the apparent contradiction of Pontius singling any particular thing out as being cheesy. It was a quick thing that I barely thought about. And what got me pretty pissed, after that, was Pontius inventing stories about my past in the forum, claiming that I've been agitating for scoring changes and so on. (He's done it before, with me and with others, so I finally snapped.) Also, you probably did not see his original post, before he edited it, which was more of a personal attack than the final version.

Apparently I was not as clear as I had hoped to be. I wonder... for the other people who read the relevant threads, did this not come through? Do people all think I hate EBZ? Should I go out and post a clarification?

I never had that impression, vincible.

It's up to you whether you would like to clarify but I feel people will always misinterprete you if they want to. I think most of us who follow the empire threads closely know better.

I've had the same feelings on occasion. I think part of the problem is that the forum is so focused on Galciv. So once you tire of that there's nothing left here. There's no off-topic chatter to keep people around after they move on from Galciv.

Just checking in this morning. I know I was gone for a while last week, but I didn't realize the scoring changes had created such a wide spread discord around here. I touched on what I thought was a fairly small issue in the Metaverse Review, but now we've got several players considering retirement. What the hell?

Look, guys...I appreciate the fact that everybody can get burned out with the game, especially when there are changes that totally reinvent how we all play the game. And if anybody is truly tired of the game, there's nothing I or anybody else can do to keep them here.

I'm glad we in the Fellowship can discuss our issues in a polite and informative manner, unlike others. Feelings can get strained and tempers can flare but it seems the Fellowship maintains a pretty even keel as far as our disagreements. Let's try to focus on the positives of the game and the Metaverse, and enjoy ourselves.

Ray, I appreciate the fact that you are considering a "submission retirement" and are still going to be hanging out in the Metaverse to help people. It might be good for a few of us to catch up to you so that there doesn't seem to be a vast chasm between the Top 10 and the rest of us. I hope you don't become a Treylis or Impune and just disappear. There's still so much to do here in the Metaverse besides game submissions. Our stories should continue, you should still be playing the RPG, and we can all enjoy friendly banter with the other empires. If we can just get the focus off of Metaverse scores, maybe everybody would realize what a unique environment we hang out in.

We may have a little superiority complex here. We've gotten accustomed to being the Number One or Number Two empire, and have lost focus of the others. No offense meant here, but I'd like to shift some of the focus onto the smaller empires. There are some outstanding battles going on between the ANZAC Republic and the Euros. The Jedi Republic is hanging in there and there are several very interesting new empires that are really fun (Evil Empire, PanGaea, etc). I think I enjoy watching them slug it out just as much as I enjoy our fight with G.R.O.S.S.

I know this post has gotten kind of long, so I'll wrap it up. I really hate that some players are considering retirement just because Maso scores are getting a huge boost. I hope they will reconsider, especially Bradley (aka TheNewfyScotian). Let's just step back and take a breather.

I feel bad for you Ray, I agree with your feelings, but if you give in you will defeat the purpose of your presence here, if people don't like you, tough, that is their problem, not yours, this is not a pageant Mister America or Mr Universe competition, you are an excellent player as EBZ is also, I wish he will keep playing, if some people have a problem with yu is their problem not yours, don't let anyone to put you down, ny dream is one day being able to play the way you do. And I also dream to see yor score one day being 1 million points. Don't let any sorry loosers get to you, if they don't like it, tell them to go to the United Nations maybe they can plead their case over there, please don't leave, stay, you are the challenge that keep many of us interested in the game, you are our goal, for that reason I am asking you don't cave in, don't give up. Let those detractors and loussy players that cannot achieve your victories to learn how to become a good player, by the way I won my first maso today thanks to your strategies, many wars have been won by following the strategies of man with great vision and wisdom, not everyone can be a strategist or a vissionary you are a good one, so don't give up, don't surrender your position.

Dear all,

Just a quick howdy from a new member... LOL

I've been a turn-based strategy fan for years, but I've only just discovered GalCiv (I don't know, all that time spent on the Apolyton Civ boards and I never noticed it :notsure: )

I've played all the Civs (including SMAC) to death, so I was looking for some alternative entertainment...

I played the demo, read some of the amazing strategy advice and now can't stop playing :D

I finally managed to upload my second ever game to the Metaverse last night (for some reason it just wouldn't take my first game?), I thought I did ok for a first bash. I think I've got the early game sorted now, working on my mid game...

Ho hum, just thought it would be rude to join this merry band without saying a word or three...

;)

Take care all,

DtM.

Happy gaming.

Great to have you posting here, DtM! You are going to have a lot of fun with this game.

As Theoden have said, feel free to ask questions here in our thread or in the forums. It's usually the best and fastest way to learn. Check out the manual and guide in the download page as well.

Enjoy! :)

Thanks for the encouragement, Theoden and Mayito. :)

I've thought it and felt that I should stop maxing my score and instead just play for fun once I achieve Fleet Admiral. That's the only way I think I would be able to sustain my interest for this great game. Star Pilot reminded me that my submissions may help improve the game so I'll still submit scores but I would definitely not be doing stuff such as researching the entire tech tree or rushing for all TGs/wonders, etc. It's good also that others get a chance to be first. We did a count recently and I think there are less than 10 persons who have touched it since we started almost 6 months back. And being first obviously means a very big deal to some people so why should I hog it?

That's lots of reasons for me to still hang around. The great atmosphere here, the Fellowship, friends, etc. And of course, I've still got that 1-yr worth of Drengin.net. :)

The only real thing I'm sick of are the personal attacks and yeah like Mayito said, I can ignore them.

Thanks for the welcome peeps :)

I also have to say that I'm amazed at the support for this game through Stardock...

I'm still languishing in the dark ages with my 56K modem at home, but being able to download all the patches and a free expansion after buying it... my hat's off to the people who made this game, such product support is a truly rare thing these days.

Oh and that morale hit you get from overpopulation had me stumped at first...

...but I'm over that now LOL

Take care all!

Alas, Killa, I haven't had a chance to actually play a game with the XPack! The one and only 1.1 game submitted by me was that darn anomalous that would only submit under 1.1.

Now, I liked playing under the beta, which is essentially the XPack, so yes...I really love the Death Knight and the increased Shark attacks. I'm also quite fond of the new events.

I've updated the Roster on the website to reflect our newest member, xenophobe!

http://www.angelfire.com/rings/fellowshipgalciv/

Just as a reminder, any Fellowship member who would like to submit a backstory for your character, post it here and I will add it to your name on the Roster page. The backstory is just a fun way to describe yourself (and it also helps us to know if you are male or female)!

Also, everyone is encouraged to write stories or submit poetry! If you feel the creative urge, this is the place to release your inner Tolkien!

Membership in the Fellowship doesn't require you to do any of this, by the way...so don't feel pressured to do anything but play the game and enjoy yourself! There's just some of us that enjoy the extra stuff! :D
