The Prancing Pony

The welcome sight of a tavern greeted the weary traveler as he moved within distance of the town. Having traveled for many days, he longed for a cool mug of ale to slake his road-thirst.

As he approached the inn, he could see a sign of a fat pony rearing up on its hindlegs. The letters, THE PRANCING PONY, was painted in white.

The common room was large and rowdy. A bald and overweight innkeeper stood bent over the counter, whispering the latest gossip into the ears of a patron. On the benches were various folks, the local drunks for most part, but in corners of the taverns, he noticed there were groups drinking by themselves.

Setting himself down, the traveler handed a couple of coppers over to one of the bar wrenches for ale.

“Welcome to the Pony.” The traveler was mildly surprised to find a sprightly old man next to him, holding his gaze with keen eyes that belittled his obvious antiquity.

“Thank you, and whom do I have the pleasure of addressing?”

“Folks around here call me Ray and I do enjoy meeting up with newcomers to see if there is any assistance I could render.”

“That would be great, Ray. I would love to learn about the people who reside in these parts.”

“Ah, that’s a frequently asked question and one I’m well qualified to answer. There are a couple of factions here in Meta that you will want to watch out for.

The Pirates are currently dominant. Not the most refined of speakers but they are a jovial bunch, with a particular weakness for good drinks.

The Diplomats hold power in the Courts. Their courtiers are many but they don’t really mix with us common folks.

The Farmers are our working class. Hardworking and honest, they are however on occasion given over to overly elaborate festivals and celebrations.

The Galahs are a group of seafarers. They are also good trainers of livestock.

The Warlords are our warrior class. Their love for long campaigns leaves them frequently out of town.

The Spiders monopolise our merchant guilds. They are by far the most invertebrate bunch of traders you will ever see.

Far to the north, the Undead holds a death grip over the wastelands. I would caution you against traveling down that road.

There are many other smaller factions around, but I leave the details of those to Barley our bartender.

One of our tavern regulars, Gerakken the Spymaster, is also in the know with regards to many of the factions. So do buy him a drink if you want to find out more.”

“Thanks for the insights, Ray. But how about yourself, which faction do you belong to?”

Smiling to himself, the old man stood.

“Come round the Fellowship Halls tomorrow morning and I’ll show you around.”

I agree, it takes way too long to load this tread. I am on cable and it does take a while. But since this was my first experence with this type of an organization, I had nothing to compare it with.

I am just now winning my first normal / gigantic game. I hope to get to the point where I can even attempt a crippling and can not imagine what the maso is like right now.

We all have to start somewhere.

I'm on LAN and this thread loads slowly for me. I'd say Ray will start a new thread soon, and we'll just retire the Balrog.

Celeborne, congrats on your normal/gigantic! Don't worry about moving up the difficulty too fast. Look at my games and you'll see I haven't moved up in difficulty too quickly. Maso and Crippling were too hard for me until just recently (heck, I think they still are!). Do yourself a favor and play the difficulty that you're comfortable with. Playing Maso right now might frustrate you into not playing the game anymore, which is the worst thing you could do!

BTW, didn't you ask where to post your backstory for the website? You can just post it here, or if you want to you can [email protected] it to me.

The whole site has been loading slowly for me (on university ethernet). I don't think that this thread is any worse than the rest.

I don't object to starting a new thread--I just don't think it will be particularly helpful. Ray, if you do start one, are you going to put some sort of "summoning" or something like last time? Give us a bit of warning to prepare stories, if you do.

Do some think huge & gigantic are easier on maso than medium & large? Why is that?
End of quote

Rick, I have limited experience on gigantic due to the limitations of the computer I played most of my games on. But on huge and gigantic, in my experience, the AI is weaker. Diplomatically, it doesn't understand that with more planets, things which affect your whole empire rather than an individual planet are more valuable (starbases, trade goods, etc) so its trading is even more out of whack than it normally is. On my current maso gigantic I bought up every resource starbase using normal tech trading. And militarily, once it declares war it takes a really long time for its ships to arrive, so you have a really long time to react, whereas on the small maps every turn is important. Basically the large maps are much more forgiving of mistakes.

Actually, what am I thinking. There's no way I'll have time to write anything over the next several days.

Theoden, I also got an anomalous for a crippling, large which is why I have no crippling games on my personal profile list. I sent my saves to Cari and she told me I tripped a money flag. I don't recall having all that much but she implied the game searches at different times for the flag. I interpreted that as meaning you could have not that much money but you may have it *too early in the game*. One of my zero scores was right after colonization ended and I used the same strategies you did. That did turn me off to sub-maso levels because I didn't want to have to step off the gas just to avoid anomalous scores. So, I think I will stick to maso to avoid anomalous scores.

Ray (in the strategy maso thread) and vincible (above) thanks for your comments about the huge/gigantic maso games. My favorite maps are tiny/small/medium/large just because I can see the entire galaxy more easily and my computer hardly takes any time between turns.

I am treating my right wrist tendonitis with rest (no gal civ), lots of football viewing LOL, anti-inflammatory Rx, and a splint. Hope I can get back in the groove soon. I will definitely play maso - either a large or small map. It might be fun to get to 100 games submitted some day. Talk to everyone later. :)

Just wanted to chime and say how much I love Excaliburs! Had to reinstall the Bonus pack to get them again but now all systems are go. Last night I finished up a game in which the Drengin were the last race to fall before my armies. I waxed the Yor and Torians with a quick transport+starfighter early rush and that made the rest of the game a breeze. The drengin were last on the list and they had amassed a huge armada of dreadnaughts and rangers. I would say they had about 50 roaming the space lanes which is a lot for a medium map. Anywho, i built a single Excalibur called the "Abyss" hehe, positioned it in the middle of Drengin fleet, and commenced the butt woopin. Like a fox in a chicken coop. I had built all the wonders/trade goods, research every tech, and had 3 maxed mil resources. The result, Abyss had 585 hp and 480 for an attack value! I used it kill every single drengin ship and never lost a single hitpoint. Muhahahahaaaaaaaaa. :HOT: Talk about Shock and Awe baby!!!

Ok people, let's migrate our discussions over to the new FotR empire thread that I have just created.
