where can I find general info on ship attributes?

A ship can be set to "Guard" or "Auto attack" etc. but there's no info in the manual about what these mean and exactly how they work -- is there someplace on this website that I can get this info - or if not - can someone enlighten me???

You're right, its not really mentioned in the manual except brief references in the keyboard shortcuts.

Sentry - Ship will become active only when an alien ship comes within sensor range

Guard - Ship will become active only when an enemy ship comes within sensor range

Auto Attack - Ship will attack enemies within sensor range

Sector Sweep - Ship will "patrol" sector

Is it just me or is Sector Sweep kind of useless? Why not just set a ship/fleet on "Guard" in the middle of the sector. That way there is a much quicker response time to enemy incursion.

I never really use Sector Sweep. :p

Everytime I use sector sweep it never seems to work correctly. May this will be fixed in the upcoming expansion.

Also, there is an auto retreat function which never seems to work either - my ships continue to go on to their merry demises. What would be nice is that this would work correctly as well as the ability to set a level of damage that your ship retreats at, ie., 20%, 40%, etc. I played a game somewhere (Civ 3, Deadlock ?)along the line that had this incorporated.

If you keep it in the middle of the sector and "Guard", the sensor radius basically stays the same with no change.

With Sector Sweep, the ship moves about in the sector to give a minor "boost" to the detection radius. Ships can be detected a few squares further away, and the sweeper can move away from the incoming hostile at the same time. Better results can occurr using a manual scouting, but Sector Sweep basically does it for you.

Personally, I would suggest making the "Sector Sweep" option a bit more versitile, such as sweeping a 2x2 cluster of sectors.

I think the sector sweep was originally designed to allow you to get to a sector, and expose the whole sector and a little bit beyond to your sensors. But I never use it b/c I always get the Eyes of the Uni and speed enhancments quickly so as to make it obsolete for me to use. Also, I tend to explore planet sectors first then go for surrounding areas so it just isn't a sweep pattern I end up using.
