Question about Military costs in 1.10a

Hello people,

I noticed in the games that I've played since moving up to 1.10a that the cost of Military seems to increase over the course of time, regardless of my slider settings. Well, not COMPLETELY regardless, but there appears to be a base value that keeps increasing. It almost looks like I'm getting dinged twice for Maintenance costs.

At the beginning of my last game, setting sliders to 30/30/40 (M/S/R) would produce something like 8/8/10, with 0 Maintenance costs. By the end of the game, setting to 0/50/50 would have me spending 500/350/350, with another 400 or so in Maintenance costs. How does 0% Military cost me 500bc AND 400bc maintenance? (At 0% I was getting the "No Resources" on my planetary screens, too.)

Any reasonable explanations gladly accepted. (I managed to win the game anyway, my first Maso win. Yay me! :) )

Don't forget that military spending figure in the budget includes maintenance on the ships you've built already, as well as military production funding you've set with the sliders. You can kill the production funding by setting the slider to 0%, but you can't cut those ship maintenance costs unless you start trashing your own ships.

Oh, and grats on the maso win! :)

Military expenses include both current turn military expenditure and military maintenance.
The "Maintenance" in the expenses box refers to social improvements maintenance costs.

Well, it's the only reason I can think of for base military costs gradually increasing, without anything to do with the sliders. It's easy enough to check - if some ships get scrapped, then by next turn, military spending should fall, and maintenance spending should stay the same. If it doesn't, I'll gladly eat my humble pie.

Hehe, I believed you, mate. Just a bit of forum-lag - I was replying to the first few posts again, then you posted first, and you thought i meant you should check, then i refreshed and saw your first post and thought that was plenty, and then you went and checked anyway...

Ow. My head's spinning around. I'm going to sleep.

Thanks for the info, TheQuack and Ray. You'd think I would have realized that for myself before now, but this game I think was the first one where I was cutting WAY back on military spending in mid- and late-game.

It does raise the obvious question, though, why are Ship Maintenance costs not included in "Maintenance"? It seems like an extremely logical place to put it... and it would avoid the counter-intuitive situation that I found myself in.

Any developers care to answer that? Cari, maybe?
