Welcome to the Fellowship of the Ring Empire Thread - The Sequel. :)

No, your nickname doesn't affect anything but what shows up here on the threads. Submit your game under your player name, which is still jp42655.

While I'm on that subject, submitting games can be a little confusing the first time. When the submission screen comes up, you'll see a place for an "Alias". That is your player name, which is jp42655. You also need to enter your email address. It takes a while to submit a game, so be patient while it sends the info to Stardock. When it's through, it will pop up a little box that'll say something like "success=1" and "errors=0". That'll mean it sent okay.

Since you have not submitted a game yet, you can also change your player name here: http://www.galciv.com/playerreg.asp

Just remember to key in whichever player name chosen into Alias on the submission screen.

I have tried that page and keep getting an error that it cannot be loaded after I click the register button. I will try later...

Theoden: I am all hooked up with the other game. Very nice. Good use of the Age of Kings engine.

On to GalCiv now...

Thanks vincible and congrats on vice-admiral to you. Very shortly Maxtipherous or Mr. Wombat will pass both Ray and me so I won't have the shiny medal for long. LOL.

Congrats to both of you! Looks like we all have played a little this weekend! :D

Just submitted a little morsel for the pile. Man, the Torians just would not die in that game... >:( Oh, well...nothing a couple of Terror Stars couldn't handle! ;)

Samwise: Glad ya liked Galactic Battlegrounds! Did it come as a set with Clone Campaigns?

Well, time for sleep. It's turning out to be an okay weekend, weatherwise. Last night's snow melted very quickly! :) Oh, and just to update you all on my wife, she had the stiches removed and it hadn't healed. She's been battling this problem the whole time. The wound just won't close. :(

Goodnight, everyone. Have a great weekend and I'll see ya on Monday.

Congrats on Third, Rick. :CONGRAT:

I've always believed Maxtipherous would do very well on the Metaverse.
Tried to recruit him quite a few times when he first emerged but was unsuccessful. :)

I played a goodly bit of 1.12, and there were some things to like about it. The loss of UP as any kind of factor has finally dragged down my enthusiasm, so I have been playing other games this week. But I can testify the AI was beefed up to better detect a coming military attack. Even parking a single transport adjacent to one of their sectors can trigger a war, although moving through does not seem to do so. DON'T PARK TRANSPORTS NEAR INHABITED SPACE. :)

Some other bits improved, although the game is still as vulnerable to party palaces as ever. IP's got changed, too, to where they are worth considerably less in trade than they used to be. :(

Theoden: Yes it came with clone campaigns. $20 + tax, not bad. Thanks for the recommendation; I love to find a good game. I am going to focus on GalCiv today though. Just dug out from the snow :(

Hey guys, it's me, dropping in for a visit. I just submitted another 60K game. (Dammit, how many pure good games do I have to submit before I earn Very Good status?) My GalCiv games seems to have fallen into a pattern of three hours of challenging fun, followed by ten hours of tedious mopping up.
I would rejoin the Fellowship, but I don't want those Special Forces guys to get discouraged by a widening gap when things are so close.
I've submitted another chapter to Theoden's Alliance of Evil story on http://idle.thehueys.com/wotw/viewstory.php?sid=138&PHPSESSID=e69bc37fcfc5c46659dbfb80b424486d - though it's not up there yet.

I noticed this too, and was pleased. The Altarians went to war from "friendly."

Then I noticed that they seem to declare war even if the transport isn't within their sensor range. That was less pleasing. (I had Eyes of the Universe and could check every ship in the area.)

Welcome back, Matthew! I always enjoy your stories.

What are you doing in the mopping up stage? Maybe somebody can give some tips on how to speed it up.

Sirian and I were discussing this in another thread. I'm reposting some test results for those who might have missed it:

I did a couple tests today. You can definitely use influence to top off a deal. However, the value of the influence seems to be not proportional to the amount--it's a step function as far as I can tell.

In one sample deal, 1000 IP was worth nothing, but 1001 IP was worth 41 BC, as was 3000 IP (all my IPs at that point.) Not sure yet what the next threshold might be. That ratio (1000 IP to 41 BC) is probably affected by the relative diplomacy of the races--I've never tested that yet.

It's a strange system :notsure:

In the first part of my game, I establish a dominant position, and get on good terms with all the AIs. I acquire all the influence resources, usually by trading techs for them. Then there's a long period of researching, building trade goods and wonders, and maximising the influence bases. Once my influence bonus hits 300% or so, a slow chain reaction of cultural assimilation gives me victory. I try to speed it up by colonising low PQ planets in their territory, and building culture bases if I have to.
Playing on Gigantic probably doesn't help.

Looking forward to you returning to the Fellowship, Matthew. I wouldn't worry too much about discouraging the SpecForces, they cover ground so rapidly with their many active overlords and bio weapons. :D

Some points on speeding up the game.

To obtain max 60k score on Maso Gigantic, there is no need to research all the techs - I believe halfway on the final stretch of techs should about do it. I also don't see much of a difference in score between trading for the techs and researching them yourself so feel free to get as many as possible from the AIs.

If you got all the cultural resources and all the cultural wonders/TGs, planting a culture colony bomb would definitely flip systems (put in a dollop of pop in your colony ships - pop increases influence). I do that often with success without need for any starbases. For sectors without colonisable systems, mop up with terror stars.

Build those embassies, cultural centres in your systems if you have not already and have nothing else to build.

Just finished another one. I'm at home today, as the baby's sick now. Yes, the "Theoden Month of Bad Luck" seems to be upon us.

Culture bombing is very tedious, but I had to resort to it in this last game because the Arceans had some lucky breaks. The Fundies didn't take a single one of their systems and they grabbed the Alexians, Carinoids and Fundies before I could. Without a strong military, which for some reason I didn't ever manage to build, I had to rely on Culture Palace Terror Stars to do my dirty work. Took twice as long as invasion, but it was really my only chance.

Well, the baby's crying...gotta go. Good to see ya Downie! And Samwise, glad you were able to dig out of that mess. I saw on the news Maine got hit the hardest.

Theoden, hope things get better for you this month.

Well, my game is going fairly well. I have two of the carinoids 4 planets and have taken out 2/3 of the altarians. I screwd up and ticked off the Yor (my friends from the beginning) by clicking too fast. They had decided to help me afterall and actually took a planet I had ships headed to...I clicked through not bothering to really read who actually owned it when I finally got there. Oooops. No matter anyway as they are next now. The Drengin have decided to be my friends now and have helped a great deal clearing out the altarians.

So far so good...

Hmm... seems like you do almost what I do in the mopping up stage.

If you have a slow computer, this might contribute to the mop-up stage taking a lot longer for you. There's a vast difference in the game's crispness between when I play at work and when I play on my home computer--everything's literally twice as fast at work, or even better in the late game.

Matthew,

Don't let us keep you from rejoining the Fellowship. As much as the Special Forces would like to nab #1, we don't want to keep you out of the empire of your choosing. Besides we were 750k back a few weeks ago, so another 200 k or so still looks possible. ;)

The mopping up phase is the primary reason I avoid big maps....

Glad to see you back,

Cypher

OK, since everyone seems to think I should, I am now officially rejoined, if that's a real word. Slaughter the fatted calf, and put on the kettle for a nice cup of tea - the prodigal prodigy has returned!

It took me longer to conquer the galaxy than it did to research all the techs in my last game, partly because I'm usually too lazy to build culture bombs until I have no other choice. I saved a few Unknown anomalies for the slow techs at the end, so they didn't take much time.
I suppose the mopping up phase was particularly long that time precisely because I got a great starting position and had more stars than anyone else right from the start, so as soon as I got my economy straightened out, the challenge was gone completely.

I've got a theory about the scoring system. I think the research score and military score you're going to get can be worked out by looking at the graphs. If the area under your line on the military graph is bigger than your rivals, then your military score will be higher than theirs. If the area under your research line is bigger, then your research score is higher. If I'm right, then things like how many enemy spaceships you destroy and how many planets you capture and how many techs you trade for are irrelevant. What matters is having a big military for a long time, and doing a lot of research over the course of the game.

Because of this, I've started trading techs for military ships that I don't plan to use.

Matthew, great to have you back!! :CONGRAT:

I got to play a little more today, so I was able to submit two games! Both had the Arceans at the end game but they had two completely different conclusions! The second game featured me running through most of the AIs as quickly as I could.

Oh, crap...somebody at the door. Gotta run.

Again, welcome back Downie!

Any Aussies around.,

Just a reminder, that tomorrow night, Wednesday, the ABC is showing a movie on the making of the latest LOTR.
Actual movie will be released on 29th Dec.

Welcome back to the Fellowship, Matthew, and welcome to the Fellowship Council!

Thanks for the heads-up, Marquesa, though obviously I wouldn't be catching the ABC show, Smeagol and Stupot, etc probably will. Our local channels usually show these "making of" shows as well.

Heard that those who previewed "The Return of the Ring" said it's the best of the trilogy. I personally enjoyed the final book more as well.
