Travel to Realms Beyond Your Ordinary Gaming Experience

Travel to Realms Beyond Your Ordinary Gaming Experience

This thread is intended to recruit new players to the Realms Beyond community through our Metaverse Empire. We don't exactly need a thread for discussion, as we have our own GalCiv forum attached to the RB website. (Realms Beyond is a veteran community of gamers with an established presence in several strategy and role playing games). However, some have suggested that our "meteoric rise" in the galactic standings represents a "mystery" and a possible threat to other empires. Surely not, says we. :)

Why not wait for interested parties to find their way to the RBGC forum, if they wish to communicate with us? That seemed wise at first, but the suggestion has been floated amongst our own that we should research "communication theory" and create a device called a "univeral translator" and seek to open communications with other empires on terms they are used to operating, through channels they are used to using. The ultimate wisdom of this idea, and this so-called translation device, remains in doubt among RB leadership, as the first attempt to use the wicked thing resulted in misunderstanding leading to combat and nearly kicked off a minor war, but we are an adventurous people and will give almost any idea a try, so here we go. :D

Our Empire Motto: WE SEEK CHALLENGE THROUGH VARIETY!

http://www.galciv.com/metaverse/empires.asp?id=555

We seek mastery over the game. The ideal at RB is to be able to beat the game on any map size, without choosing to abuse the AI's various inanities, without having to have perfect terrain conditions. Any alignment, any victory condition, any habitability range, any political party, any combination of bonus picks. If a challenge lies before us, we will embrace it. Mistakes, setbacks and losses do not represent failure, merely a chance to learn, from which greater success can sprout and flourish.

No skill level is too high or too low for RB. All we ask is that you play your best and have a good time.

RB players venture beyond the ordinary. If you are like unto our brother in the spirit in which you play, you would be welcome to join our empire. All you need is interest, an RB-style gaming attitude, and the desire to participate. Our mission is to have fun, to pursue excellence, to play fairly, to uphold the integrity of the game, to embrace variety and challenge, push the boundaries of the game and gameplay, experiment, learn, grow, and do it together.

Our passion is the AAR. We live to read a good AAR and to write our own. Fun shared is fun doubled. The RB Epics tournament for Civ3 sees every participant post their own AAR after each tournament game, with the chief entertainment value being sharing insights, experiences, and laughs. Whether we will hold a GalCiv tournament remains to be seen, but the possibility is out there.

We keep a list of rules for our GalCiv gaming. This list will grow and evolve as the game evolves and our understanding of it matures. We voluntarily refrain from (in our opinions) game-breaking tactics that unbalance a game or pigeonhole it into one "best" path to victory. Some game elements may be broken or have loopholes. Some moves may just be "too strong" and kill variety. We do not use these moves. We do not have to use them. Mastery over a game is established by taking the high road, by trudging uphill and building our strength and endurance. Our interests lie in seeing the game refined to where the game balance provides extended replay value and neverending strategic challenge. However, unless and until that state of polish is reached, we will set our own boundaries to create this effect for ourselves, whether or not it can be found in the game as currently programmed.

If this sounds like your kind of gaming community, we invite you to travel to Realms Beyond.

Our forum for Galactic Civilizations:

http://www.network54.com/Hide/Forum/237344

Players interested in joining Realms Beyond should venture to our forum, read the lastest version of our rules, and confirm their assent to abide by the rules we have set. We place the quality of our gaming experience ahead of our standing in the competition. Excellence brings its own rewards, its own forms of recognition and respect from peers. That is something no measurement or score could ever fully depict.

Anyone who agrees to our playing philisophy and signs their John Hancock pledging their allegiance to our posted rule set will be confirmed onto our roster. Come one, come all, for the time of your life. LOL Our star is rising. Our destiny is written in the heavens. :HOT:

We are also hoping to generate enough excitement to lure out some of the other RB players who have yet to pick up GalCiv. Surely when they see the grand party we are staging at our best starbase, some will be compelled to join in. And as far as "threat to other empires", that's purely propaganda. We have no hostile intentions. Now if some players are impressed with our culture and decide to emigrate to our worlds, that would not constitute hostile action against other cultures on our behalf. ;) We cannot help but to be ourselves. :D

I've had suspicions that ship losses might contribute to lower military scores. In that end, I am a little more careful sending my ships out on pointless search and destroy missions and concentrate on lethal strikes when necessary, mainly clearing defenses off of invasion targets.

Congrats, Jaxom.

Well--finally got my fist game under my belt--time to move up to some more worthy opponents. Maybe I'll even get used to using some governors and not cringe when I keep hitting endturn. Civ3 habits are hard to break. :p

Thanks guys, just doing my best to help RB overtake the Anzac team.

I know the feeling BamBam. My first few games, I kept staring at the screen between turns thinking "What did I forget to do? My turn was too fast, I must have forgotten something!"

I rarely have to hit Next Turn. With autoturn on, as soon as I move my last ship, the next turn begins. And unless the map is small or it is very late in a long game, there will be more fogbusting to do, or I will leave my surveyor on manual to get the most out of those juice Unexplained anomalies, so I do usually have at least one ship on manual.

Maybe I'll even get used to using some governors and not cringe when I keep hitting endturn.

I only use one governor, even. Too much hassle to manage more than one, I found. All I really need to do to get the effect of two governors anyway, is to change a few priorities later in the game when I want all my new colonies to do nothing but improve morale. It no longer matters on the old colonies, because they built all that stuff already anyway. Thus, one governor fits all. :D

It's not that I don't micromanage, but because all the spending is global, I can only choose one setting. I can only micromanage one thing at a time, and the rest are along for the ride. Get to it, get on with it.

I tried to play a turn of FRFR and a lot of things in Civ3 felt awkward. Go figure. :)

I always use 2 governors, sometimes even 3. 1 governor with lots of morale for the planets lower than 18 PQ, another with lots of production/research for planets of pq 18 and up. Sometimes I setup a special governor prioritizing cultural improvement when I decide to settle pq 14 planets deep in ennemy territory.

I do it this way because your higher pq planets cannot use things like harmony generator or virtual reality center if you try to keep all planets at 100% morale all the time. And the lower pq planets don't gain much benefit from fusion power plant and anti-matter power plant. There are few improvements I don't build on all planets, but I have a very different build order for high pq versus low pq, so the governor is very helpful to me.

Sirian, in your last report you spoke about one of the AI's always leaving one of their planets on morale 1 until the I-legaue took over all of them. I just noticed exactly the same thing in my latest game, surely that must be a bug.

hey guys I was able to submit a game last night and noticed on metaverse we are really close to 9th place!

we must have had several of us submit games recently

just thought you guys would like to know :)

Oh yeah. 100k of the 150k lead the ANZACs had on us went poofies in about three days. :D

And that was without me playing at all. :) So good show, the rest of you. Chenglian just leaped up, and Jaxom continues his conquistador drive. BamBam posted his first game. Now if only we can find where KoP got lost, we'll be ready to rock n roll.

I took a break in my conquistador drive to try a tech victory on a gigantic map, just to see if it was worth the points. Well it is quite pitiful, I scored 24k only. So I reloaded just before researching the final tech, stopped all the ongoing wars by gifting techs, made everyone love me by gifting more techs, allied with the 5 majors and got an alliance victory worth 57k. I hope they fix the tech victory scoring some day so that we don't feel cheated on the score.

Now I'll try a cultural victory on a gigantic map to see how it compares.

got my 2nd game up. Medium, loose, occasional, challenging (all bright), industrialist (econ +30, morale +10, socprod +10, pq +5). Had some nice luck (deciding to build my fleet after battleships and then getting a random event starting a war with the Drengin. Lots of fun to be had. Lots of flips--flipped the allied Drengins out of the game :)

I can see what Sirian has said about just taking the quick victory--this game has a much nicer recognition of a won game than Civ.

Oh yeah, and time to up the difficulty. :p

We are chasing the Anzacs who are bullying the G.R.O.S.S. pirates who are taking potshots at the Evil guys who are, well, just too evil to fight fairly! :D :HOT:

Which empire will hold the 7th place by the time the new year is upon us? :)

"Poof" - American term for the act of disappearing in a puff of smoke. Like, a magician on stage waves his wand, causes a puff of smoke and a flash of light, obscures the object, and when the smoke has cleared, POOF, the item in question is gone. Like... magic.

Poofies is where you tell a child that something went when you know it ain't comin' back, but you don't care to explain the hard truth in detail. :D

Um... the ANZAC lead has gone poofies. :HOT:

So did the time estimate on the new patch, by the by. Poof! Now you see it, now you don't. :) Perhaps the kindly Stardock magicians will bring it back for us next week, though. ;) (The patch estimate, not the ANZAC points lead LOL).

The crowd rejoice throughout the Realms as we finally reach a million points!!! :CONGRAT: :CONGRAT: :CONGRAT:

For those interested in the scoring mechanism, I tested cultural victory on a gigantic/rare map. I saved my game 1 month before getting a cultural victory, stopped all wars and allied with the 3 remaining majors, this gave me 54k points which I submitted to the metaverse. I then went back to the game to let the cultural victory complete, I would have scored 48k points, quite reasonable compared to alliance. Compare this to my post about tech/alliance and you'll understand why they need to fix the tech victory scoring.
