Travel to Realms Beyond Your Ordinary Gaming Experience

This thread is intended to recruit new players to the Realms Beyond community through our Metaverse Empire. We don't exactly need a thread for discussion, as we have our own GalCiv forum attached to the RB website. (Realms Beyond is a veteran community of gamers with an established presence in several strategy and role playing games). However, some have suggested that our "meteoric rise" in the galactic standings represents a "mystery" and a possible threat to other empires. Surely not, says we. :)

Why not wait for interested parties to find their way to the RBGC forum, if they wish to communicate with us? That seemed wise at first, but the suggestion has been floated amongst our own that we should research "communication theory" and create a device called a "univeral translator" and seek to open communications with other empires on terms they are used to operating, through channels they are used to using. The ultimate wisdom of this idea, and this so-called translation device, remains in doubt among RB leadership, as the first attempt to use the wicked thing resulted in misunderstanding leading to combat and nearly kicked off a minor war, but we are an adventurous people and will give almost any idea a try, so here we go. :D

Our Empire Motto: WE SEEK CHALLENGE THROUGH VARIETY!

http://www.galciv.com/metaverse/empires.asp?id=555

We seek mastery over the game. The ideal at RB is to be able to beat the game on any map size, without choosing to abuse the AI's various inanities, without having to have perfect terrain conditions. Any alignment, any victory condition, any habitability range, any political party, any combination of bonus picks. If a challenge lies before us, we will embrace it. Mistakes, setbacks and losses do not represent failure, merely a chance to learn, from which greater success can sprout and flourish.

No skill level is too high or too low for RB. All we ask is that you play your best and have a good time.

RB players venture beyond the ordinary. If you are like unto our brother in the spirit in which you play, you would be welcome to join our empire. All you need is interest, an RB-style gaming attitude, and the desire to participate. Our mission is to have fun, to pursue excellence, to play fairly, to uphold the integrity of the game, to embrace variety and challenge, push the boundaries of the game and gameplay, experiment, learn, grow, and do it together.

Our passion is the AAR. We live to read a good AAR and to write our own. Fun shared is fun doubled. The RB Epics tournament for Civ3 sees every participant post their own AAR after each tournament game, with the chief entertainment value being sharing insights, experiences, and laughs. Whether we will hold a GalCiv tournament remains to be seen, but the possibility is out there.

We keep a list of rules for our GalCiv gaming. This list will grow and evolve as the game evolves and our understanding of it matures. We voluntarily refrain from (in our opinions) game-breaking tactics that unbalance a game or pigeonhole it into one "best" path to victory. Some game elements may be broken or have loopholes. Some moves may just be "too strong" and kill variety. We do not use these moves. We do not have to use them. Mastery over a game is established by taking the high road, by trudging uphill and building our strength and endurance. Our interests lie in seeing the game refined to where the game balance provides extended replay value and neverending strategic challenge. However, unless and until that state of polish is reached, we will set our own boundaries to create this effect for ourselves, whether or not it can be found in the game as currently programmed.

If this sounds like your kind of gaming community, we invite you to travel to Realms Beyond.

Our forum for Galactic Civilizations:

http://www.network54.com/Hide/Forum/237344

Players interested in joining Realms Beyond should venture to our forum, read the lastest version of our rules, and confirm their assent to abide by the rules we have set. We place the quality of our gaming experience ahead of our standing in the competition. Excellence brings its own rewards, its own forms of recognition and respect from peers. That is something no measurement or score could ever fully depict.

Anyone who agrees to our playing philisophy and signs their John Hancock pledging their allegiance to our posted rule set will be confirmed onto our roster. Come one, come all, for the time of your life. LOL Our star is rising. Our destiny is written in the heavens. :HOT:

We are also hoping to generate enough excitement to lure out some of the other RB players who have yet to pick up GalCiv. Surely when they see the grand party we are staging at our best starbase, some will be compelled to join in. And as far as "threat to other empires", that's purely propaganda. We have no hostile intentions. Now if some players are impressed with our culture and decide to emigrate to our worlds, that would not constitute hostile action against other cultures on our behalf. ;) We cannot help but to be ourselves. :D

And, a kind of interesting start to the succession game too! We're going to be spread all over Hell's half-acre...

Looks like a challenging map, indeed. :SURPRISED: Be sure to find me in the lurking crowd. ;)

Good luck, guys! :)

Interesting start to your succession game. :)

Regarding your submission of this game to the Metaverse, each savegame contains a serial number so since Sirian created this game, it can only be submitted by Sirian unless someones goes and amend the serial number.

You guys may already know this but I thought I'll just mention it just in case.

Yeah, at the end of the day we plan to nominate someone to submit and swap in their serial number. Not sure who that will be yet, though. :)

Good luck managing your two decent planets and the bunch of rocks. :)

The maintenance for a PQ9 must really hurt at this early stage.

Yeah, I'm thinking this would have been a good map to go for a one planet challenge! :) Of course it's far too late now, even if we abandoned everything we'd still be way far behind on the pop growth/tech/wonder curve...

The serial in this game is X'd out. When/if we submit the final result, the applicable player's serial will have to be edited in, yes. Fortunately, word I've heard on the grapevine says there will be changes to improve on this situation in the expansion.

The PQ9 won't be needed much longer. The upkeep is either 5bct or 10bct, not at all a bad hit for a few turns as a downpayment on grabbing even one yellow star, much less a whole cluster of whatever is out there. As pointed out, we're kind of short on yellow stars so far, so each one counts big. :)

It is not so much that you are short of yellow stars, more like you are short of yellow stars without alien infections ;)

Aha--now it all makes sense...Jaxom has just been acting as the GalCiv Doctor lately (vice conquistador)...cleansing the galaxy of these so-called infections. LOL

Yeah, no kidding. I'm jealous of your gaming time, Jaxom; you're certainly putting it to good use!

It is a bit more than that... we also are paying to spend money there to build something (currently a scout) that we may or may not want. And, if we want to get our value out of that spending, we have to keep that planet around long enough for it to complete, or else pay to rush it. Otherwise if we flush the planet at first opportunity, we also flush that spending.

Still, it's well worthwhile if it gets us the range we need to settle a few more yellow stars.
Well--I build two scouts out of there before abandoning it--the scout did help find some more yellows--one of which we will get on TBC's turn.

Overall--good gambit on your part Zed. :)

Well, our fearless leader was the one who originally proposed it, I just took what sounded like a plan and ran with it. :)

Situation looks slightly tricky as you are sandwiched thinly between 3 AI powers which looked like they had decent starts.

Should be interesting. :)

Well, I finally finished a game that I started a month ago! Ouch! I hate my schedule right now. Still, it should be easing up sometime in January.

Sirian, quick question for you. You said on the other forum that UFO Aftermath was good, but you didn't give much feedback on the later stages of the game. Did it stay good? Did you finish your hardcore game? Did you finish the game at all? I'm looking at maybe getting it as an after Christmas present for when I get some free time (I'll still be playing GalCiv as well of course - just need a different type of venue for a change of pace.)

Yeah! Back in 9th place, within reach of 8th. :CONGRAT: :CONGRAT:
But who will be in 7th place by the endof the week is nybody's guest. :)

RB and ANZACs been going at this for so long, we may pass the two Evil groups together and STILL be fighting it out to see which of us will lead the other. :D

Steve, I got one of my 60k presents in for you. May be next year before I can send the other two, though. ;) :HOT:

Oh look, I'm up in the SG. :)

Added a 29K game (small, abundant) to the pot. It definitely felt like milking, though, getting terraforming/evolution control and a bunch of other unneeded non-military techs & building building building for umpteen turns before finally launching a terror star strike. Next time I may not allow it to drag out, and to heck with the score... we shall see. :)

EDIT: not sure why my game isn't showing up yet, though... perhaps later.

Umm, btw... what does a zero-score game look like, as in how would I know if I got one? The fact that my game is not showing up is making me suspicious that that might have happened to me. I'm not sure why, though... about the only thing I can think of was that I had saved up about 15-20k in preparation for building about 8 terror stars, basically by turning off spending while waiting for my constructor fleets to position themselves. That doesn't strike me as a terribly large sum, considering I still went about 17k in the red when I built them...

Zed, I think it would actually show 0 Mvpts on the summary screen. I am not sure, never got one. Maybe you should load the end game save and submit again, I have had this kind of trouble in more than a few occasions. What I do is, I submit, alt-tab to windows, loadup explorer and move to the metaverse page. Then I wait for a couple of minutes, it could take a while for your game to come through.

By the way, I have once accumulated about 70k gold for a terrorstar alpha strike on a gigantic map. Most of that game I was in the 30-40k range due to all the trade in the galaxy coming to my central hub :)

I've submitted the game a couple different times now, including replaying the last few turns from the PreviousAutoSave file and trying to avoid building up as much cash. From what reading I've been able to do I would expect a zero score at the game summary screen as well -- I just don't know any reason why this game submission wouldn't be working. :sniff!: Maybe I will have to mail the file to CariElf and see if they can figure out what's going on...
my zero score clearly said it was a zero score in the summary. so it may be a submit problem? others have had the same problem of submitting a score and it being 'succesful' and it not showing up in the meta....sorry can't help more...

As far as cash goes, the only restrictions seem to be in the early game. People have had millions of BCs in the late game and submitted successfully.

This doesn't seem to be your problem though. If your game was anomalous it would say so.
