The tales of the agent - part 6

Or - how I finally became one of the gang

A powerful blast shook the Special Forces regular pub. Quake after quake hit the compound, anti-matter explosions rocking the members inside. Wombat even spilled his drinks.

"What in darnation is going on?!" He bellowed, as the agent entered. "It's him! Battle stations!"

"There is no need to get agitated, my dear wombat", answered the agent. "I come in peace. And anti-matter missiles."

"Isn't that an oximoron?" Inquired black smoke, one of the newer members of the force. He piped down after the agent gave him the look.

"Yes, it is an oximoron. The best kind.

Regardless, I have come to join you. I grow weary of bureaucracy."

"We don't trust you", said the wombat flatly.

"Nor you should. But then again, I do have 50 anti-matter missiles outside. Do you have a choice?"

The group pondered for a while.

"We have decided among ourselves to accept you to our gathering", answered Wombat, and behind him jaws nodded amiably.

"What a shock. Well, this does call for a celebration. And I know just the place. Don't I, Koala?"

The agent was very fond of Koala look of horror for quite a few days.

Harel, Wombat, Jaws and Koala sat on Barad-dur's porch, sipping a lovely drink. Someone was out back with a hawaiin guitar.

Harel: Ahh.. Very passable, this, very passable.

Wombat: Nothing like a good glass of elfwine, ay Jaws?

Jaws: You're right there Wombat.

Koala: Who'd a thought thirty years ago we'd all be sittin' here drinking elfwine?

Harel: Aye. In them days, we'd a' been glad to have the price of a cup o' tea.

Wombat: A cup ' COLD tea.

Koala: Without milk or sugar.

Jaws: OR tea!

Harel: In a filthy, cracked cup.

Koala: We never used to have a cup. We used to have to drink out of a rolled up smart-paper.

Wombat: The best WE could manage was to suck on a piece of damp nano-cloth.

Jaws: But you know, we were happy in those days, though we were poor.

Harel: Aye. BECAUSE we were poor. My old Dad used to say to me, "Money doesn't buy you happiness."

Koala: He was right. I was happier then and I had NOTHIN'. We used to live in this tiiiny old house, with greaaaaat big holes in the energy dome.

Wombat: House? You were lucky to have a HOUSE! We used to live in one room, all hundred and twenty-six of us, no furniture. Half the floor was missing; we were all huddled together in one corner for fear of FALLING!

Jaws: You were lucky to have a ROOM! We used to have to live in a corridor!

Harel: Ohhhh we used to DREAM of livin' in a corridor! Woulda' been a palace to us. We used to live in an old starship water tank on a rubbish astroid. We got woken up every morning by having a load of rotting fish dumped all over us! House!? Hmph.

Koala: Well when I say "house" it was only a hole in the ground covered by a piece of energy barrier, but it was a house to US.

Wombat: We were evicted from our hole in the ground; we had to go and live in a nebula!

Jaws: You were lucky to have a NEBULA! There were a hundred and sixty of us living in a small shoebox in the middle of the intergalatic highway.

Harel: Cardboard box?

Jaws: Aye.

Harel: You were lucky. We lived for three months in a brown paper bag in a septic tank. We used to have to get up at six o'clock in the morning, clean the bag, eat a crust of stale nano-paste, go to work down the fabricator for fourteen hours a day week in-week out. When we got home, out Dad would thrash us to sleep with his belt!

Wombat: Luxury. We used to have to get out of the nebula three o'clock in the morning, clean the nebula, eat a handful of hot anti-matter ore, go to work at the fabricator every day for tuppence a month, come home, and Dad would beat us around the head and neck with a broken bottle, if we were LUCKY!

Jaws: Well we had it tough. We used to have to get up out of the shoebox at twelve o'clock at night, and LICK the hyperspace conduit clean with our tongues. We had half a handful of freezing cold anti-matter, worked twenty-four hours a day at the fabricator for fourpence every six years, and when we got home, our Dad would slice us in two with a vibro-blade.

Koala: Right. I had to get up in the morning at ten o'clock at night, half an hour before I went to bed, (pause for laughter), eat a lump of cold poison, work twenty-nine hours a day down fabricator, and pay mill owner for permission to come to work, and when we got home, our Dad would kill us, and dance about on our graves singing "Hallelujah."

Harel: But you try and tell the young people today that... and they won't believe ya'.

Mayito: I'm sure that in the fullness of time Killa could think up a really cool soap opera that involves you, and say... no, I've reformed. I think I'll stick to Arthurian Tales from now on.

Harel: :D

New chaps: Don't forget to leave a message with your former mates telling them what happened to you. They'll fret otherwise!

Refresh AGAIN - this is the Delta Force icon.

This one is cool. My vote would be this one or the last one.

Good morning!

It's been an interesting evening. Welcome Harel and Piers! I'm working on a story, I just gotta finish filling all those Euro papers Killa gave me...

Harel - It's great to have an enforcer! I think the other empires might be more 'receptive' to our diplomatic advances now.

Killa - I am beginning to think you should quit your day job and become a writer. I would definitely buy anything you wrote...

Piers - Congrats on the addition to your family!

Actually, I've become a fairly hardcore maso player, but I'm sure I'll get back in the writing mood when I start to slow down with the games again.

Cheers,
Cypher

Another thought. The logo du jour is quite nice. I wouldn't mind if it stayed around for awhile...

Well, it doesn't matter how the CO marks the barracks as long as I can find the pub. Better yet, the officer's club. They must have the good stuff there. Just keep the troops in shape. PT on the parade grounds at 0600.

Welcome aboard, Harel! Nothing like a little trip down Python Lane to set the tone!

Cypher, if I ever published I would be sued for every penny I made. Looking forward to a new Cypher story.

I like the current logo: what does it represent? And the sergeants' stripes looked great (very mainstream military).

Hmm, the muse is of the snake variety??? ;)

It's always easy to knock a new logo.
So I won't do it.

Well maybe.

Can't resist.

It looks like one of those triangles the Euros carry in the boot of their cars, in case they break down. ;)

Thanks to everyone wishing me well. It won't be long until I teach her the front leaning rest! :D

As soon as I return from leave, I'll toss my contribution to the literary skills on this forum with first of the Space Assualt stories. It's been a while since I last worte, so bear with me. :notsure:

OK everyone - last refresh! Gold star this time, and that's just about it. Thanks in particular to Jaws who really hunted up some good ones; the problem is that an image with ANY complexity seems to simply trash out in the forums.

So far we've had:
1. The 'foxhead'
2. Medal of Honour
3. Silver star
4. Dragon on spaceship
5. Sgt. stripes
6. Delta force (the triangle - Killa I dont know what Delta force is; Quack will know!)
7. Gold star

Really, the ones that work best are the simpler military images that give good recognition on the forums as well as the big board.

The most positive feedback so far has been for the Sgt stripes, perhaps followed by the Delta force.

So - make some noise, people (SpecFor and others): which one shall we go for?
I've missed the 1st three but for 4-7, out of 10, I will score them:

1. Sgt - (9/10)
2. Delta Force - (7/10)
3. Dragon - (3/10)
4. Gold Star - (2/10)

Delta Force lost points because not everyone is familiar with this US special force and it's from one country. Sgt stripes is an internationally recognisable military rank and it could represent a coalition of special forces from around the world (Aussie, US & Israeli at the moment).

That's true Ray. Every country probably has Sgt stripes. Except, I think that Australia has the stripes the other way (Quack?).

I prefer Delta force icon.. who gives a toss if anybody doesn't recognise its a US special force insignia... there you have it... it is an actual special forces insignia... ;)
I prefer the delta force icon too. BTW, Israel doesn't have sergeant stripes the same way too. Check it out:

OK - we'll need to wait for all the votes if there isn't an obvious winner. It's a race in two, unless there are other strong feelings. I'd favour stripes over triangle, so that's two all with one observer for stripes. Actually, the Israeli one was kinda neat, too. Keep the votes coming... ;)

the delta force icon was the better looking one
but i still like the fox.

I vote for Delta Force, everybody in the world has seen the movie "Delta Force" with Chuck Norris. ;) Even in Australia. LOL :D

I vote for the Delta Force logo... thought the Stripes are my second choice.

Just submitted another game, yesterday I would have snuck onto the big board - this morning it was good for 27th place. I guess this gives me a task for the weekend...

Yeah, the sarge's stripes point the other way around here - of course, you still have to recognize them even when you're hanging upside down :SURPRISED:

I'm voting for the stripes one, just cause it still looks so damn good when it's squashed. Plus, people won't keep asking what our logo is :)
