My concern of a pay for expansion pack...

My concern of a pay for expansion pack...

One thing that has always annoyed me with other companies is the lack of support for the core game once an expansion pack has been released. In the case of GalCiv so far that has not been a problem since all patches and expansions have been free all bug fixes and stuff need only be applied to one branch of the source code.

What is going to happen once/if there is a pay for expansion? Will the main game (without expansion) still see bug fixes? Will it die as far as growth goes? I know originally all the talk about keeping people interested in GalCiv was by providing regular meaningful updates. Will this end for the people who don't want to pay for the expansion?

Just wondering, because I think, although it will bring in some new revenue, it has a very strong risk of splintering the community into two groups, and eventually completely isolating one of the groups.

I know for me in the past when bug fixes were only applied to an expansion, and I didn't buy the expansion I got very angry at the company. It didn't make me want to buy the expansion, in fact the opposite was true. It made me want to not buy from them again. As for new content, that's your perogative, but I do think it will splinter the community.

JordanVmp: if you don't mind moving to Michigan, you can always apply. :)  You'll need to know C/C++ and DirectX.

Read a manual on your way to the interview and I'm sure you can wing it ;)

I cannot understand, for the life of me, why people think they are entitled to a lifetime of freebees.

Stardock said they budgeted a year of support and it appears that they are on their way to fullfill it. The support has been great IMOHO.

Lack of support because they didn't place individual sliders per planet? Come on. Was this in the plan to begin with? You can't equate personal game tastes with the "lack of support".

Support the game a year after it enters a store? Are you serious? Do you really expect Stardock to support this product 20 years from now when it finally enters some store in Nepal? (exaggeration used to make my point)

The things people post these days . . . ;p LOL

People always seem to jump to extremes.

My original point was Stardock mentioned in the early literature the way to keep interest in a game after it is release (and cut down on piracy) is to release regular meaningful updates after it is released.

That doesn't mean they have to do it for free for ever, but when they stop, they will likely see a big decline in the borderline players like myself.

I've given it quite a bit of thought, and I have decided against buying the expansion pack. Upgrading to Drengin.net doesn't seem like a good deal to me since the only thing I'm interested in is GalCiv.

Anyway, that's just me. I'll let you people who are still fanatics about the game continue to enjoy it. I'm probably going to slide to the back of the pack now.
