Star Faring Tax? How do you have a star system in a sector you don't own? The Council asks for a tax to be levied on systems in sectors not owned, if I have a system in a sector, do I not own that sector??

How do I ask for money to not go to war the way the AI does. Is it Attack for money? I don't remember seeing the AI's name listed with those available to attack when selecting that option. Could be just a rookie mistake as well. ;)

John,

If you look at the "Influence" within a given sector, whoever has the most influence is considered to own that sector. Usually it's only when there are two (or more) stars in a sector, each owned by a different race; only one race can own the sector.

You can demand money from another race just by going in to the diplomacy screen and selecting some amount of money from their side while selecting nothing from your own side. The text will say something like "We must ask that you give us 150bc." (Or, if they are stronger than you, It'll say "Even though you could crush us like a bug, we must request that you hand over 150bc.") It's pretty darn rare for an AI to bow to extortion requests, though.

I've never seen the AI bow down to a request, even when I could crush them like a bug. Ah well. :) Just makes it more interesting I guess.

They do bow if you're strong enough.

I've never been able to extort money out of the AI - even when having a vast mil. superiority.

Best way to go about that is to actually declare war ('giving' the declaration of war to another AI is good) and immediately offer peace. Against a price of course.

Works most of the time, although last game the Drengin would not accept peace (which is fitting, seeing their nature).

Thanks to all. So I am to gather that the influence of said sector changes as the Council meets? So if the AI had control for 4 years, I could conceivably take control for the next 4, as the Influence resets after the council meets right?

My idea would be to buy influence from a Minor on the first turn after the Council convenes thus rushing ahead in IP for at least a little while during the next 4 years.

Actually, that may be a good way to drain AI resources without spending your own money while doing it, hmmmm. ;)

I don't think you're actually buying influence. You're just buying votes in the UP... But someone can correct me if I'm wrong?

Exactly. When you buy Ip's you are buying the votes in the council the influence represents, not the actual influence itself.

Way's to increase sector influence are (a starbase with influence boosters)
This is not recommended if the aliens have a planet in the sector. They'll demand the starbase and go to war if you don't give it to them.

Planet influence boosters such as embassies

influence starbases or planet influence boosters such in the adjacent sectors.

Grabbing and mining any influence resoruces. (blue cubes)
