Frogboy - Do you have a pond?

I know he had a natural pond in his backyard before they moved. I think all he has now is an indoor aquarium with his pet turtle "Snuggles"

Yea, we have a big neighborhood pond now. I used to have one in my backyard but the new place we moved to doesn't have one in the backyard yet.

I just transplanted a few thousand tadpoles into the new pond over the weekend.

Hey guys, I have a koi pond in my back yard about 15x8 and 4' deep.

Is it safe to put tadpoles in it or will the koi eat them?

heh, a friend of mind had a pond full of koi...then a nice blue heron moved in. Just like like the 10 little Indians...and then there were none...

You can put tadpoles in, Koi don't like the taste of them. Frogs are so great to have (even if they're a bit noisy sometimes)!

I just love red eyed tree frogs (monkey frogs)! They're sooo cute!!! I got a picture of one stuck to my pc and another bigger one on the wall. Tree Frogs rock!

What kind of frogs do you all have? I do frog research, I use Xenopus laevis, the African clawed-toed frog. People have them for pets. The great thing about them..well several:

1) They are incredible survivors, just give them clean fresh water and they can survive an incredible amount of trauma/infection
2) They are totally aquatic. All they need is water and food.
3) They are quite large, the females average 6-9" not including length of legs.
4) They live a very long time, I think 5-10 years, i can't get any firm numbers on this.
5) They can survive long periods without any food at all (at least the females can - they use their oocytes as food stores)

Anyway IMO they make ideal pets but are overpopulating areas like California. Just FYI. Oh a website is http://www.growafrog.com/

I would put them in my pond, except they'll eat young fish.

Sauteed Frog Legs

Ingredients:
4 pair frog legs
4 Tbsps butter
1 Tbsp minced garlic
1 Tbsp chopped parsley
1/4 cup fine bread crumbs

Heat butter, garlic, and parsley over medium high heat in sautee pan. Add frog legs and sautee until tender. Roll frog legs in fine bread crumbs before serving.


Jusk kidding, I've never had frog legs, but I just couldn't resist posting this. LOL

I have a  Xenopus laevis in a little aquarium. Got it for Christmas some years ago (going on 4 years now). Surprised it's lived that long. But it's a cool little thing.

Most of the frogs here are just the common green frogs you see in the midwest USA (We're in Michigan).

The tadpoles I have here are actually toads. I've tried to find a place that will sell leopard tadpoles in quantity but not much luck.

Brad, I go to a place called Hydroharvest which is in Eastmanville. Kind of near Muskegon. They have green frog tadpoles, leopard frog tadpoles, and bullfrog tadpoles (lots). If you'd like to go there and get some call ahead of time to make sure they have them in. I bought 35 green/leopard frog tadpoles 2 weeks ago (which was 1/2 of what they had), but they get more in. I was going to get more, but I got a terrible case of Ick from some snails I got from www.liveaquaria.com Made me soooo angry! My indoor aquarium got it too (where I put more snails from them), but my 2nd aquarium inside did not which is how I traced the disease to them. I'll never buy plants/fish on-line again.

If you decide to go, you can stop by my house if you'd like (it's right on your way) and you can see my pond/eat. I'd even go with you to Hydroharvest if you wanted.

By the way, the leopard frog tadpoles I got from them last year (15) ALL grew to frogs and survived the winter! My bullfrogs have never made it... But when we re-did the pond we had all of them in a blow-up kiddy pool, and they all left

I'm sure you know this, but the reason leopard frogs made it is cause they can practically freeze (deep mud is not needed) and thus can survive the winter. Bullfrogs cannot (they need deep mud), and I have a Xavan flexible liner, with no mud on the bottom of the pond - so it's not too good for the bullies to survive the winter.

Do you also enjoy the great aussie sport of cane toad golfing? I always have a Driver ready when I'm staying in QLD.
