That is the way is going to end if we keep this policing garbage going...
I'm not going to kill empire threads on this forum, and we don't have the ability to close threads, but I wouldn't do that either. In fact, I'm rather appalled at the suggestion. The intent of creating the Empires forum was never to turn me into an autocrat! And it was also never our intention to make the empires feel banished. After all, what would come next? Banning people who didn't follow the rules that were never set in stone anyway? I didn't come up with these rules. A group of you, the community, did to fix a problem in the coummunity.
The problem, as someone said, is in finding a balance. The empire talk here was getting out of hand. People were replying to bug/question threads just to recruit. People were replying to empire threads with the word "bump" just to keep a thread going for a few days until the main contributers posted again. Or the "(insert name) look here" threads trying to recruit people. And competition was turning into flame wars. Long threads were not necessarily the problem, it was having 5 pages of empire threads pushing "help me" threads back, making them harder to find by the poster. If I was a new user, I would find all of this confusing and frustrating.
But Gerakken has a valid point. The activity here has died down a lot since the empire forum was created.
That being said, this isn't really any different a setup than most forums.
I have seen many forums divided into role-playing, bug reports, general discussion, etc, and the activity level varies from section to section. It's the price of being specific. But it also means that new people can come and not flounder in a confusing sea.
We have now experienced two extreme levels of empire activity here on the forums: a lot and practically none. The sticky recruitment thread and the signature recruitments seem to be a good policy, and keeping the story threads in the Empires thread seems like a good idea, since that's where the flaming tends to end up. So let's try an experiment in an attempt to find balance.
Let's allow advertisement/news flash type threads for Empires in the general forum. IE, "Will G.R.O.S.S. succeed in overcoming the Jedi Republic? Check out our thread (link) to find out!"
I would also like to see the Strategies forum more active. If any of you would like to keep an account of your games and discuss why some strategies worked better than others, I think that would be a really great way to add more activity to the Strategies forum. And it might inspire some of the players who are stuck in a run, just cranking out submissions for the Metaverse. No, I'm not disparaging the Metaverse! But I also think that it's silly to be bored playing Gal Civ the same way every time just to get metaverse points. There's a very true saying "The only difference between a rut and a grave is that you can get out of the rut."
OK, so maybe I am beating a dead horse here...
I agree that many of the new players would join based on a number one ranking, or a fast moving empire, or a cool name. (I am sure that several of the empires now worried about decline have benefited from one or more of these very conditions.) How many of those players would submit games for a month or two and then never be heard from again? How many would become members in the forums as well as just tossing in their points?
I don't know if I really have a point to make with all this. Maybe just this... If you are doing what you enjoy, the people who want to share it with you will find you, and the rest doesn't matter so much.
The idea that we should do most of our business in the other forum is ok. And we have been following that suggestion. The Idea that we should do none over here just smacks of a little kid wanting his way 100% with no compromise possible.

As I said, I have no problems with the empires. But the agreement/compromise settled on by this community, that of the participating GalCiv posters, was to keep recruiting down to minimum. One bump to complete a story didn't bother me. But I had read repeated mention of "being segretated/cut off". I thought it would be a good time to bring up this hot topic again. If I offended you, my apologies. I just wanted people to air out any of their issues on this, and fell back on bad old habits. Guess I don't qualify for the Diplomats.
By poll, it seems that our larger (posting and lurking) community feels that we should keep very Empire related threads (communication, fiction, etc) seperate from the other forums. Personally, I think the seperation has done the GalCiv community well, as it allows our front door to be very friendly to the new or potential new players (seeking help or info) who come here to ask their questions and check out the game. They see a place that is friendly to them, and one that isn't "incestious" or "cliquey". They can then branch out and check out the modding, strategy, and very large community of empire when they are ready.
That's a real accomplishment, btw... being new player/poster friendly in a community this tight. If a place is very tight, it tends to put off many visitors, as it makes them feel they aren't welcome, that they've stumbled into a very exclusive, private club and are not welcome to stay. I doubt any GalCivver wants to make any new player feel they aren't wanted or welcome. Well, just the trolls need not apply here, right?
I certainly see nothing wrong with the occassional tease (like the mention of the Clone Wars not too long ago, for instance). And I've thought several empire members had been doing a fantastic job of "soft" recruiting for their empire without raising the noise or spam levels.
But I really don't like to hear from any of our experienced players and participants that they feel cut off. Why is that? Do you feel you can only express yourself in Empire forum? Or do you feel that you need to be "In character" and thump on how pathetic those Jedi are and how soon you and your enlightened brothren will show them the error of their ways? No one wants to step on you having fun here. But I don't understand how having a forum dedicated to Empires creates these feelings. I've participated in various game communities throughout my enjoyment of many computer games. Most of the time, those communities end up evolving dedicated channels (forums) for various topics. Whether it's because it's an important topic that has a low number of activity/threads which make them hard to find if not seperated out (Strategy and Modding are examples here last time I looked), or high traffic/participation subject that gets seperated out so people can find everything else (Empire is GC's example). Seperation is about putting like with like, and making it easier on those that are interested in those subjects to enjoy them, not about segregating the community into different class or status members.
I think the decline in participation is a natural process. One which is not due to the seperation of forums, but due to human nature. People bought GC, they had a blast and many participated in the GC community (forums, empires, etc). But RL or their interest led them away after a some time (a few weeks, a few months, whatever). People and their life change, and its just a natural process. This lulling is a natural occurance that you see in most games and their communities. AP should help drive up the number of participants (new and returned). We've already had several people return, due to their anticipation of AP, and due to the Beta being available.
I do not want our long lost or inactive friends who are returning to start a new "recruitment" war. But I also don't want any of our posters feeling that they are cut off from any part of the GalCiv community. So please, feel free to flame me if you like (I've got plenty of high temperture resistant material in my uniform). But while checking out this thread, please check our fellow GalCivvers issues and feelings about the seperation of topics. And don't forget to share your opinions about these matters.

Well.... No, we will not post a recruitment message here ![]()
Well, the Accord of Recruiting struck by the Empires to end the Empire Bump/Recruiting War was that recruiting is fine as long as your replies contained genuine on topic comments, or some such thing, wasn't it?
But I really do wonder why some players feel "cut off". If I felt that way, I wouldn't have as much fun or feel as welcome here in the GalCiv community. I don't like the thought other GalCiv members feel that way. All the business about making an Empire forum wasn't about making any of us uncomfortable in our own "home" here; it was just about making it easier for our visitors and new members to easily find help and feel welcomed here, so that they too might decide this was their home and stick around.

Because it was kind of like the eyes of the Secret Police where on us. Say the wrong thing and they might be there. We empiring types were basically holding our collective breaths, few wanting to break the self-imposed rules. Now I did not speak out against the Great Experiment so I could raise heck recruiting through all the threads, but I was firing a shot across the bow in a letter of intent. Reason being that if one day soon I did post something mentioning the then forbidden concept called empiring here in the GF that I could fight any opposition at full strength without feeling like I broke some sacred promise I never made and maybe getting clubbed by my own side still intent on preserving the old status quo.
