Masuda’s Missing Foreskin

(Author note: for fellow JU author Johnny Masuda)

I rarely ever hear
my pal Masuda
(who has seen it all)
express shock

but when I told him
about how the male
foreskin contains
millions of nerve endings
that can bring about intense
pleasure
he was downright outraged.

“You mean I haven’t
been getting the most
enjoyment possible?”

Female genital mutilation
is something only done
in backward primitive cultures
but male genital mutilation
is considered
good medical hygiene and
in my tribe
a religious ritual.

Masuda immediately
demanded his foreskin
back
but what’s done is done
and can’t be undone
and you can’t unring a bell
and just like an angry word
spoken in haste
an apology cannot erase
the memory.

Most American males in
my age group
don’t even think of the effect
it had on them

-surgery on infant genitalia
without consent or
anesthesia.

Imprinted on the young psyche
bleeding
searing pain
hurt and screaming
in a room of spectators

Male desensitization
begins almost immediately

a circumsized male
learns to separate
himself from his body
and disconnect himself from
his pain

almost upon arrival
disconnection from his body
and his self.

Masuda’s anger is
justified

He burned years and countless women
looking for ecstasy
for communion
to feel connected again
to reconnect with himself.

I think of all those millions
of nerve endings
that are summarily
sliced off like so much
unnecessary gristle

and wonder whether
the uncut ones among us
feel things deeper
better
truer
all the way from
the tip of their genitals
to the core of their souls.

Freud was close, but not
on the nose.

Most of us men suffer from
foreskin envy.

That's right. I want my foreskin back, now! Damn it!

Me too!

(for the record, my only son is NOT circumsized).

God bless him and his foreskin
