Gentle Reminder

Don’t wait until I’m gone
before you tell me
that I was the best
or that I made your life
complete

because time respects no one
especially me
as it keeps moving
plague-like over all us
deaf to all pleas

Don’t wait ‘til I’m gone
to mention how I made you
happy and that you
needed me to make everything
sunny and light
because a funeral is
pathetic milieu for
belated appreciation

because if you tell me
now
I can look into your eyes
and remind you
of how important you are to
me
and I’ll hold you
and you’ll never doubt
my love or sincerity

and you’ll know forever
how you slipped by
all my defenses

to the real me
and made me
enviably happy

don’t wait to tell me
how much you love me
because one of us may die
tonight.

And a rather good poem on the whole.
