Mid-game playability problems

I was trying a small galaxy map last night and found myself mired in mid-game blahs. By this I mean that:

1) All the decent planets had been colonized.
2) A few of the _really_ marginal planets had been colonized.
3) Peace had broken out across the galaxy.
4) My nation was having a hard time making headway.

By #4 I mean that unless I pared the spending sliders way back I was only making 2-3 bc per turn (and cranking back the spending sliders in order to accrue that marginal bit of extra money screws with the ability to research and produce things).

So I was reduced to clicking the Turn button to whittle down the 100+ turn research projects and accrue enough money to build the planetary improvements that were needed. Said improvements were also in the 75+ turn category.

God forbid I wanted to build a battleship (300 turns).

There wasn't enough money to speed up production to improve the marginal worlds to the point that they could produce on their own, etc...

I'm not sure what the monetary unit in the game is supposed to be but you'd think that an entity that can successfully colonize half a dozen star systems would be able to do so _and_ have a decent income that would allow the building of needed improvements on the colonized worlds without scrimping for every penny.

While MOO2 wasn't perfect it was pretty darn good and if you built your empire on a solid economic foundation you never really had to worry about whether you had the money to build planetary improvements. (Building Doomstars out of petty cash is something else)

The build times for improvements seems out of whack as well. 150 months to build a bank?

Am I doing something wrong here or have other people encountered the same thing?

Magus,
You may want to start a new game and watch how morale varies with what you have in the treasury. When you go into debt morale plummets so you have to try to get your finances in order (get out of debt) to get morale back up. If you catch it quick enough you can prevent it from going totally out of control, but your people get very angry at you if you let your debt run away with you for very long.

BTW, if I remember correctly (perhaps someone can check) the OS2 version had a warning pop up if you went into debt. If this is planed for this version it is probably just not ready yet.

The ten trade routes really help, although you are not supposed to be able to reach that because of the advanced trade bug...

I think that taxation revenues need to be increased personally.

Umm...the advanced trade bug should be fixed now.

The text that shows how much money you have in your treasury will turn Yellow if you go into deficit spending, and turns Red if you actually go into debt.

I'd still like a pop-up for those times when I miss it coming on, say when the treasury is less than 100 and the spending is such that my treasury will decrease by more than 30%, or when the treasury transits into the minuses?

Thanks,
Jack
