Pirates of the Southern Seas

Pirates of the Southern Seas

Dreams

Dropbear was a dreamer. Not a dreamer of petty dreams such as dreams of wealth acquisition and being really nasty to people. But a dreamer of castles, and Princes and dragons and those are the best dreams of all.

But Dropbear can also be crazy and evil and shy and jealous and do horrible things. In other words he is a bit like pretty much everyone.

This tale is unusual because I can tell you the ending: Dropbear tried to repent of these evil ways. He wanted to stop being an evil, dreaming anti-hero. He wanted to do some good. But why did Dropbear want to be selfless and good? That needs some explanation.

The Freedom Force Pub

Dropbear was a Commander of the Freedom Force. He had fought missions and done his best, although his best was not always good enough. He loved his country and his mates, and he liked his new found adorableness. But he wanted more.

He wanted to be a ruthless irascible pirate like Pontius, or a conniving and handsome Spymaster like Gerakken, or a super-organised and respected Supreme Leader like Ray the Wanderer, or the President of the CariElf Fanclub like MM77, or a loveable and wise wombat like Wild Wombat. But he was none of those things, and never would be.

In other words, Dropbear was feeling a bit down and a bit jealous, and maybe a bit unloved. To stifle a sob he took a swig of a rather nice Kiwi pinot and looked around the bar. His current mates were here: a small group, loyal and true. The nightly chess game had ended with Bakka beating Ajm37 again.

Dropbear knew that he and Hurls would drink each other under the table before this night was through: he had found a good Shiraz, which Hurls would appreciate. But Dropbear also had another agenda for this night: he wanted to unburden his soul. And who else to do that with, than one’s mates?

As well, he had an ending to make: and a new beginning too.

Earlier

Dropbear’s Private Hell

Dropbear dropped the message crystal in disbelief. The moving image winked out. Yet, he picked the message crystal up again, and this time, replayed it, time and again. Afterwards, he had some thinking to do. With a heavy heart, he entered his battleaxe, the CariElf, and took her into space.

An Evil Pirate

Dropbear was evil and loved nothing better than to bribe and wheel and deal.

He measured the pirate with his eyes. The pirate could be suborned: Dropbear could see that in an instant. The question was at what cost? And with how much effort?

The gold, reflected in the pirate’s eyes, was a sparkle that held no lustre. But the pirate could not see that. “Arr. Gold. Bright and yellow, hard and cold. Heavy to get and light to hold.” The pirate squinted at Dropbear. “What must ah do, evil one, for the prize ya offer me?” Dropbear gazed back, with a forlorn look: “The price is high. But not so high that one such as you would not pay the price. Betrayal, spying, murder and mayhem. And…especially information. A bargain at any price!”

The pirate nodded. “Oh yes, a small price to pay for gold in the hand”. The pirate spat in his other hand and offered it to the bear. “Let’s shake adorable little bear”.

Dr Quinn’s Consulting Rooms

Dr Quinn was misunderstood. Long had she practiced and with quite good results. True, she had often misdiagnosed Pontius, but he made her nervous. She could not diagnose under pressure.

She cackled wildly. “Ah raven what shall we do? Our small collection of animals has dwindled to naught. How shall we continue our experiments, eh?” She whacked the dissection table with her scalpel. Dr Quinn’s raven fluttered and squawked. Quoth the Raven, “Nevermore!”

“Why Raven, do you admonish me?” She laughed gaily. “Animals of the woods we need, or better yet, talking animals! Yes, large talking animals. Or dare I dream…a man. MUHAHAHAHA”. She laughed a little insanely and drew the scalpel across her palm, with tenderness and a little madly.

The raven looked at the red, red blood in the flickering candlelight.

CariElf’s Temple

He walked down the boulevard, the memories almost overpowering. The fights, the tragedies, the characters, the Pres! The Temple shone with such a light as he approached: a light of clarity and goodness.

How did I leave the path of goodness so quickly, wondered Dropbear. How easily evilness beckons and then sucks one dry. He had fought his monsters and lost and could never return to the fold of the Viscountess. Or perhaps he could. No man can truly know the course of time, he thought.

But not yet. The pirate had been a useful spy on the Ship of Doom. Dropbear now had verification of the claims that had been made in the message crystal. “The burden I bear is too great”, wailed Dropbear. “The knowledge that I have, I can no longer hold and stay sane. I must confess, if only to my mates”.

Dropbear took one last soulful look, and left the Skowbo swamps, forlornly.

From the shadows the Pres watched him leave: “You shall return Vice Pres” he murmured. “And she shall heal your soul. Goodbye for now adorable, little bear” he shouted into the dank, swamp air.

The CariElf swept up into the sky and departed the planet, sadly.

Jimmie and Peggy-Sue

Peggy-Sue nodded enthusiastically. “I love Star Trek, and especially Captain Janeway. The power, the command, the authority”. The inflection on the last word made the waiter wince and move quickly past the couple’s table.

Foolishly, Jimmie wasn’t listening: “Yes and science fiction…”
“Oh, Jimmie. I love SciFi, the goofy stories and…and…all…that stuff”.
Jimmie was in seventh heaven. He had finally, he had truly, found his soul mate.

The Ship of Doom: The Officers’ Mess

CypherPax was being led out again. Mrs Pax stood at the door of the Officers’ mess, waiting patiently. She clutched a rolled-up magazine. Pontius shuddered: he knew how much pain a rolled-up newspaper could do: let alone a Marie Claire!

“Ah mate”, he said, “How’s the eye?” CypherPax looked from his good eye, silently imploring. Silently he mouthed ‘save me’. Pontius shook his head somewhat sadly, the Paxes had not been married long, and Cypher still had some learning experiences to suffer.

Cypher slumped as the waiters led him towards his doom: “The festering has stopped” he muttered, just before the door closed.

Pontius shook the Pirate Times and settled down for a read. The plush armchair enveloped him. Gerakken sat down beside him, somewhat stiffly: “Pontius, where was that banging coming from…” Pontius shook his head again: “Ya don’t want to know”.

Some minutes later, Pontius gasped: “Would ya look at this Gerras!”, inclining his head towards an article that only he could see.

Gerakken looked up sharply. He had his reports to flick through and was tiring of Pontius’ constant references to popular culture. “Who’s done what to whom?” he asked, concisely.

Pontius was oblivious. “Why, huh, gee, that’s funny…” He petered out. Gerakken was wise to this strategy, but could not help himself. “What, what, WHAT?”
Pontius looked up puzzled. “Um, gosh Gerras…settle down”. Pontius read out the article, which was directed at pirates and so was short and in very simple English. They looked thoughtful. “So the mutants are in turmoil! How odd.”

Jimmie’s Wedding

Young Jimmie’s wedding was spectacular. From the badly dressed bridesmaids, to the photo session in the botanical gardens, every piece had been carefully planned and executed.

Jimmie was beaming. “Gosh Mr Pax, what can I say. It has been magical. We fit like a hand in a glove. Why, my Peggy-Sue may be much older than me, but she has been the best thing that has walked through my front door since sliced bread”. Cypher looked as if he was about to say something, but he felt a presence behind him. “Of course lad”.

Peggy-Sue showed her engagement ring to her friends, Mary-Lou and Janeese. “Yea, it’s nice. It’s unusual. It’s different” they said in unison.

Pontius was leering at the women from a safe distance. He quickly looked around for Mrs Pilot who had momentarily disappeared, before leaning towards Gerakken. “What foxy ladies they are!” Gerakken looked at Pontius quizzically, before he coughed.

Mrs Pilot came up and saw the direction of Pontius’ gaze. “Ponshie!” She studied Pontius’ face very carefully: “They are pretty things aren’t they?” Pontius looked utterly innocent: “Oh, um. Actually, I hadn’t noticed”.

Pontius had learnt that lesson early and well.

The Ship of Doom: The Spymaster’s Coterie

‘Judge a man by his questions rather than by his answers’, thought the Spymaster. ‘Hmmm. I wonder what that means?’

Gerakken looked around his coterie. Spies and weasels, undercover men, standover men, Yor droids and chambermaids. A motley collection to make him proud.
“What news, my friends?” Before they could answer, Gerakken coughed suddenly: his flu was getting much worse.

Dr Quinn and Gerakken

Gerakken could barely lift his weak head. The Elven flu had taken hold of him, firmly.

“Dr Quinn, do you have aspirin?” Dr Quinn looked at Gerakken disconcertingly. “Ah, neurophen then…?” Dr Quinn began to take her blouse off, button by button, all the time licking her lips. In, out, in, out: darted her long, sharp, red tongue.

Gerakken blanched with fear. “Dr Quinn, I am a happily married man, what of your morals?” Dr Quinn shrugged: “Once I had morals. Once I was young”. The last button was undone.

Gerakken squirmed and thrashed. “But what of your ethics as a doctor? What of your doctor’s registration?” The blouse came off: “Once I had ethics. Once I was registered”.

The too-handsome Spymaster began to sob. He knew he should have taken Pontius’ advice and seen Dr Spock instead.

Peggy-Sue

Peggy-Sue sobbed. “There, there” said Mary-Lou with a hidden grin.

Peggy-Sue could not be consoled: “Mary-Lou, it has all changed. Since we married, Jimmie has changed.” This revelation shocked even Mary-Lou.

“If I’d known that the flowers and the nights out every night were going to stop, I’d never have got married!”

Finally

The Freedom Force Pub

Dropbear began his tale slowly, as if he lacked courage to continue.

“Mates, the story I tell you is pitiful, but it is not your pity I seek. This night I shall unburden my soul: and in truth I seek your understanding. I have not been lucky in love and long have I wished for the joy of marriage. The pleasure of sharing hobbies; discussing science fiction books; playing computer games together; all of those things that married couples do”.

The gathered mates nodded solemnly: they too wished to see every single, happy man married.

“Now I am evil, you know that. But I am a little crazy too. Once I lived on Skowbo, and held a position of some repute in the Viscountess’ employ”. The gathered group stirred, for Dropbear rarely spoke of those halcyon days.

“Ah, the adulation, the poetry, the chocolate….and Gerakken. Always Veteran Gerakken”. Dropbear’s chill voice became icy. He stifled a sob. “That handsome, common pirate tormented me. Why, do you know he won every award for his prose? Every one! I quoted Wordsworth for sheep’s sake! Do you think they knew. Or cared?”

Several minutes later Dropbear pulled himself together with some effort. Wombie looked tormented at the strain that showed on Dropbear’s face, the tears matting his fur. He felt Dropbear’s pulse, but let him continue.

“Now a pretty enough lass once visited the Temple. Oh, she was a game one. What a horn bag”. He chuckled. “The times we had...the laughter, the drinking, the late nights cavorting…”
The gathered mates looked both repelled and fascinated.

“But it didn’t last, why, it never does, does it? She left and never returned. I never heard from her again. That is, until this week! The shock! Her message told me all that had happened those many years ago….I have verified what she said of course”

Dropbear straightened and looked ahead without emotion. “This is why I tell you I am leaving the Freedom Force, to join the Pirates”. The group gaped, numb.

“Yea, it is something I must do, to make amends. I was not there when she needed me. She has since married and does not want me now. But our son…”

“You have a son?” asked Wombie quietly.

Dropbear looked down, he could not meet Wombie’s sad, knowing eyes.

“Yes, Peggy-Sue had our son. He was born in the dark recesses of a cargo freighter. The freighter was raided soon after by pirates and our kid was kidnapped. She traced the ship, which did the deed: The Ship of Doom! This is now my destiny! To become a pirate and find my son: to give him the father he never had!”

The gathered mates began crying and hugging as one.
There had been an ending, but a good beginning as well, at least that was how Dropbear felt.

Postscript

Wombie packed his bags thoughtfully. Mates stick together he thought. Hurls came in, and the rest, carrying their bags. “There is one other thing that I didn’t understand last night, Wild Wombat” said Hurley with a frown. “What is Dropbear’s special power?”
Wombie grinned. “Haven’t ya worked it out yet? Why, it’s glamour. When he looks forlorn, ya have to adore him. What a nifty power to have!”

The soon-to-be pirates nodded, thoughtfully. Of course.

Wombie and Killa each wondered how Pontius always knew how to break into their secure channels but decided they'd keep an eye out nonetheless.
End of quote

Any Emperor (Captain) of an empire of pirates would have to have an 'internal security' network. Indeed, G.R.O.S.S. has its very own Spymaster. :)

I note the groundswell of public opinion that Wombie should be a Veteran is growing.

On that note, maybe every purchaser of Drengin.net should get a special medal?

ENTER THE GEEKTRIX

Pontius strode purposefully into the mess hall of the Pegasus. He looked around at the assembled crew. "Bring the Pegasus into transmission range of the Geektrix."

"I'm taking Wombat to see her."

Heads shot up around the table. "See who?" said Wombat.

"Her...the one who sees all." said Quack. "She's been with us since the beginning of the resistance...the Orifice. She tells everyone their fortune...and it's not always pretty. Pontius must really think you ARE The One...taking a risk like this."

Jaws casually plucked a piece of Torian...something...from his second row of teeth. "It may be the only way to track down Bakka, despite the risk of Agent Ray. I trust everyone downloaded that D&D Third Edition tape Cypher and I made?"

They assembled on the fight deck, and Bp shipped across from the Doom to monitor their incursion into the Geektrix. All was ready.

brrr,brrr....brrr,brrr....

They were standing in a small semi-circle. Wombat was wearing his customary long black leather coat and dark sunglasses. Pontius was immaculate in a leather coat, green tie and pince-nez shades. Killa wore a golden velour track suit with sparkling running shoes. Cypher was dressed in a white leather suit with red cummerbund, while Jaws wore his favourite Bond tuxedo in basic black. Quack was wearing a lumberjacket over a striking red and brown Miller shirt and flared jeans. Hurley looked...well, no different really.

They looked out on...the muddy main street of Bree, with horse-drawn carriages trundling up and down and a noisy market in progress.

"Not exactly appropriate dress for a medieval setting..." mused Quack. "Still...it could have been worse."

"Not from where I'm standing." whispered Hurley, glancing at Quack and nudging Cypher in the ribs.

"This way." Pontius led them down a pathway between two shops at the end of the main street. The path wound around and into open countryside, taking them to a small cottage nestled in a secluded grove. Small wisps of smoke issued from the chimney, indicating someone was at home, and as they approached an inviting smell of baking cookies wafted towards them.

Pontius stopped and looked directly at Wild Wombat. "She will be waiting for you. All of us have been here before. She will tell you exactly what you NEED to know. That's all. What she says is for you, and for you alone."

The door opened and a Harper Scout approached the group. "Welcome, Pontius and friends. Wombat, the Orifice will be with you shortly. Please wait inside."

Wombat entered to find himself in a large meeting room. The door to the kitchen was closed. Several children were playing carefully and thoughtfully with a variety of objects scattered around the room. With his experience, Wombat was thus reassured that this was indeed a fantasy world. If his nippers and favourite niece Ashlyn were here, the room would have been trashed in sixty seconds. It was obvious that none of these children has the faintest appreciation of military hardware.

The Harper Scout entered and moved past him, opening the door to the kitchen. "The Orifice will see you now."

Wombat entered the kitchen to the pungent aroma of baking cookies. The woman at the stove turned...and Wombat's jaw dropped.

"It's YOU."

The woman smiled. "Ah yes, wild one....I go by many names and identities in this existence. Flowergirl, Coat Tail, MeningoCotal...all these and more am I called."

"The others said you were some kind of fortune teller."

The Orifice gave a wry grin. "I see what others need to know...I also know what they need to see....and I need to know what they see. See?"

"Er...well...no, not really."

"Let me say this. Wombat...."

"...what will really mess with your mind later is if I had told you earlier there was going to be such a long pause, would you have still kept quiet?"

Wombat thought something about that exchange wasn't quite right, but he pushed on doggedly with their reason for seeking out the Orifice. "Listen...I really need to find my old mate, Bakka. He didn't make it back with us. I made a promise to find him. I intend to keep it. Anyting you know about his whereabouts would be helpful."

"Ahh...your friend the bat. I can tell you this: Bakka has undergone an immense and startling transformation. He no longer resembles the one you once knew. He has a completely different existence now; one that you would not easily recognise."

Wombat sat down heavily at the kitchen table. Tears welled up in his eyes. In a voice choked with emotion, he said: "You mean...he's gone off the grog?"

"Er...no. He drinks as heavily as always. The only advice I can offer is to search the darkest, most evil places of the Metaverse. This is where you will find him."

"Um...you dont have a phone number? Email address?"

The Orifice sighed. "No, you idiot." She went across to the oven, opened the door and pulled out a tray of cookies. "Mmmm...Wombat, won't you have one of my hash brownies? Smell great, don't they! Trust me, by the time you finish one of these, you'll feel a whole lot better."

Hash brownies. Wombat looked at the woman, with her twinkling, slightly out-of-focus eyes, and her slightly crazy grin...and he suddenly understood a great many things. He got up and backed nervously towards the kitchen door. "Ah, no thanks...I guess I'll be going now..."

Suddenly, the sound of gunfire pierced the stillness surrounding the cottage. Wombat thought he heard the sound of Cypher's monstrous mini-gun firing outside. The Harper Scout crashed through the kitchen door. "AGENTS! Run, everyone!"

Wombat raced outside to see his friends firing into groups of the local militia. Jaws was calmly taking pot shots with his Walther PPK, whilst Cypher's mini-gun roared as Killa and Hurley tried to work their way around and encircle the attackers.

"Keep your head down! They're using Arrows of Striking +4!" yelled Pontius as he reached for his mobile phone.

"Operator."

"B - this is Pontius. Need an exit - fast!"

"Boss, they've cut the line we used to get in. Someone knew we were coming. Only communication exit...let's see...carrier pidgeon seller at the corner of Flinders and Swanston St."

The pirates dashed into the forest to make their way back to Bree and the way home. At that moment, a sharp CRACK rent the air, and Agent Ray stood in the clearing outside the cottage.

"Welcome back...MISTER Wombat. And you've brought company...including the mighty Pontius. TAKE HIM!"

Pontius hesitated for a moment, then reached into his coat and pulled out two projectiles, flinging them at Agent Ray. The Pontius Bombs struck the ground in front of the Agent, throwing him back and scattering the troops.

They eventually made it to the carrier pidgeon seller after despatching a number of the local troops, deluded as they were, who quickly discovered that swords and shields were no match for modern firepower. As Wombat's paw closed around the carrier pidgeon, and he felt the familiar dislocating sensation as he returned to the Pegasus, he was left with one lingering feeling from his time with the Orifice.

A vision of unutterable evil.

“Pontius”

“Ah Jaws, do sit down… It seems like you’ve seen through my little ruse about Pussy Galore and escorting her back to Suboceana”

“Yes indeed, the last thing I wanted was to be landed with a day of `do my hips look big in this` or `does this colour really go`… so are you going to tell me what really going on”

“Ok” Pontius then paused for effect “Pussy’s not what she seems”

“What, are you saying she’s a guy”
“No Jaws, she’s a spy working undercover for us, although as you know she is the ambassador of Suboceana”

“Ahh… Interesting, so what’s so special about Skowbo II apart from it’s 90% covered in water and the alleged home base of Hairy the Taco’s Evil Empire”

“Well the Evil Empire have stolen something that belongs to GROSS and are using it to lure potential members away from our empire” replied Pontius “They’ve got bakka and look what’s happened to Rainbird… Although I think a lot of that has to do with Evil Dave buzzing around like mozzie on ectasy”

“Good point Pontius…. I take it you want me to retrieve your subliminal coercer and bring it back?”

“That won’t be necessary Jaws, after going through the detailed specifications again, we noticed a flaw in the design that if you used in the wrong hands could have catastrophic consequences… It would make terror stars look like fireworks, the knock on effects across the galaxy would mean the end to all Pirating”

“On your way to pick up Pussy go and see Quack”

“Jaws do come in”
“Hello Dad”
“It’s ‘Q’ when you’re on a mission, Jaws” replied the duck wearing his white scientists coat.
“Just a couple of things to take with you… Now pay attention!”
“If you are going to offer me your chat up lines book, forget about I don’t think I’ll be needing it”

“I’ll get that bastard Koala for doing that to me… no here is the vehicle you’ll be taking to Skowbo II” Quack hits a button on his console and a holographic image of ship appears before them both.

Sleek in appearance with a touch of masculinity about it they both stare in amazement.

“Very nice” said Jaws
“Brand new” replied Quack “The latest in multi purpose travel… It can fly at Hyperwarp speed, can be used as a surface vehicle as well as converting to a submarine, which will particularly useful on this mission.. Its fitted with all the usual armoury including your imploding torpedoes, we’ve done some minor adjustments to those to enable them to be used in small spaces…. And Jaws, bring it back in one piece”
“Have I ever let you down before Q” smirked Jaws

“Take this watch, once some useful features, turn the dial and it becomes powerful magnet, you can pull out a tri-strontium wire, useful for garroting and cutting through cheese, it has a laser and if you press this button three times quickly and hold this one down for 3 seconds, it will let you tell the time…. Fascinating eh?

“Anything else?” asked Jaws

“No, thats about it… Good luck”

Can I offer a little bonus to be an agent for the Evil empire?

Wow. Lot of ground for me to read over tonight. To sum it up, I already got a soapbox and it is this forum, so I am going to use it! This new maso thing is somewhat good and bad to the bone as well. Sure, I want maso to be rewarded the greatest, but not at the expense of every mid-level being unchanged. The graph should be more of a steady incline from cake to maso, not some disjointed beast where the lowest levels are one relatively flat line, followed by a slight spike at normal and another flat line until another slight spike at crip and then a HUGE spike at maso! Hello, there are real differences between normal and painful and the scores should reflect that.

OK, time for me to jump off the soapbox.

The Disappearance of EBZ Part 2.

The Pirate fleet headed out to rendevous point Bravo Sierra 69 to their meeting with the Odysey. On the way they saw a devestated Planet.

Wasn't that? Uh huh... Oh my god. Ray Glassed his own planet? Why?

Pontius: Obviously to send a message. We will send one of our own, by any mean's necessary. Engage!!!

The Pirates met up with the Odysey. She was a huge ship. Almost as big as the record size ship, the Roseanne, but that's another story. Still utilizing the Ring design, she had 4 nacell's to generate her warp field located in the center of the ring. On the ring itself was all her point defense weapons. It was indeed inpenatrable. The Pirate fleet let em have it. But no one could stop this ship.
Wombat: Pontius, guess that drinks going to have to wait, we're dead in the water.
Finally, aboard the Gallactica. "Captain Killa, Reading a core breach immenant in the r'derex."
Killa: Pontius' ship. Ahead Flank!!!
Killa sir: the R'derex has jettisoned her life pods. She's making a direct run at the Odysey. Z axis spiraling in much like a shark attacking a seal Reading EBZ and Pontius aboard.

Pontius. EBZ pour it on, This ship uses a quantum filament rather than dilithium as it's power source. We have about 30 seconds to use our emergency transporters. LETS RAM THIS SOB RIGHT DOWN THEIR THROATS!!!.

PONTIUS TO kILLA: GET YOUR SHIP OUT OF HERE, DO NOT MAKE THE ATTEMPT, THAT'S AN ORDER.

Killa: Shut up Pontius, we're gonna rescue you.

Pontius: Oh then. Why certainly, EMPORER Killa.

As the R'derex careened in a spiral path toward the Odysey, Killa, in the Gallactica, sped toward the rescue. All other ships were retreating.

Meanwhile.
Pontius:
EBZ you transport off, the Gallactica's transporters are down so we'll have to use our emergency transporters.
EBZ: CONFOUNDANT, MY BATTERIES ARE DEAD!!!!!
Pontius hands ebz his transporter

Suddenly EBZ punches Pontius in the nose.

24
"Consider yourself on report, this is no time to be a hero. WHAM, A FIGHT ENSUES. ebz ends up laid out on the floor. Pontius plans to transport him out at the last second.

Ouch!!! Pontius feels a pain in his ankle, It's the emergency transporter.

BOOOOOOOOM!!!!!!
The Odesy and the R'derex explode, But ironically, a new planet is created, a sort of Genesis world.

Meanwhile, aboard the Pegasus.
Pontius materializes on the bridge.
Killa WE CAN'T WAIT ANY LONGER EMERGENCY WARP NOW!!!!
Zooooooooooooom!!!!!!!

Pontius you made it!!! EBZ?

Pontius shakes his head no.

Sir: We read two transports off the Odysey. Staffa's fleet warped out just after. Do you suppose he's gone the way of Staffa?

Pontius: I don't know. I doubt Staffa was in range, but there is always hope.

We'll miss ya EBZ. Cheers.

Great start to the rescue, Wombat and Jaws...

I was responding to Dark Assasin on the Evil Empire thread and I added the next part (I am copying it here, because I don't know how much of the POSSE reads their thread - assume the setting is there 'home world.'

Since this is the POSSE thread, you get the special extended version with the deleted scene.

The Rescue?

Just as the Dark Assasin finished speaking, he heard the cry of 'incoming.' It was the only warning he needed as he slipped into the shadows just in time to avoid being caught in the impact crater of a large white Drop Bear.

'Darn' exclaimed Cypher Pax as he dusted himself off.
'Dark, I don't suppose I'd be elgible for assasination lessons?
At 700 pounds, Cypher Pax was capable of firing the helicopter gatling gun from his hip. At hundreds of rounds per second, he was sure to get Dark Assasin this time.

Somehow Dark Assasin had survived the onslaught. But luckily, he saw what he had come for.

Bakka had escaped and here he was - no he was no longer a bat - he had reverted to his much less handsome pre-Posse (okay, ANZAC/Freedom Force) form. Cypher was a little disappointed he wouldn't have to shoot his way through the prison.

'I am here to rescue you, Bakka! Let's go...' Cypher shouted.

'Who says I need rescuing? You may need rescuing though....' Bakka snickered.

'Oh, boy.' Cypher looked down at his wrist communicator Q(uack) had given him. It had been smashed to pieces his oh, so graceful landing.
'I don't know that you have a choice... you know how Wombat and Jaws can be once they get an idea in their heads. I....'

A shadow lunged and Cypher Pax and went right through him. It was Dark Assasin -- Cypher was grateful to be wearing his leather Dopple Bear suit with the red cumberbum... it also acted as a cloaking / displacement device when activitated. The Quack liked to pretend it was spy gear, but Cypher knew it was just left over from the Quack's unsuccessful blue film 'The Invisible Man v. Leisure Suit Larry'

Cypher laid down suppresive fire leveling parts of the Evil Empire mansion (imagine the scene from the first Tomb Raider movie without the ropes). His hover bike had arrived and he dropped the min-gun and hopped on. Ashlyn was strapped into the baby seat on the back (it was rear facing to protect her from collisions and to allow her to serve as the tail gunner.)

'Daddy' she yelled as the bike speed off. Cypher flew over the hover vechile pool and dropped a fusion gernade, barely having time to get out of range.

Cypher flew to the nearby city - home of the Torian slaves and a large spaceport. Cypher had stashed a get away ship there.

'Goggie, Doggie' Ashlyn shouted excitedly.
'No, sweatie those are Torians' Cypher said as he patted her head. He then realized that his daughter's instincts had saved his life. The Torian had been following him and was able to microwave in a report. Cypher pulled out his sabre 'Sushi' and cut the Torian in three pieces. The nanoblade was so sharp he didn't feel resistance against the blade.

Cypher hurried to his getaway ship the 'Collinwood.' As he was about to board, he heard a sultry female voice. 'Stop right there and put your paws where I can see them.'

Cypher Pax put Ashyln on his shoulder and turned around paws in the air.
'Rainbird, What are you doing here? I thought you and Quack make such a cute couple.'

'You know I'm always wanted a polar bear skin rug for cuddling by the fire.' Rainbird said as he leveled the gun at Cypher Pax.

'I am not a polar bear, I'm a Bundy Bear! For goodness sake I thought you were Australian.'

'Silence.' hissed Rainbird.

Ashlyn started to cry and throws her rattle at Rainbird.

'Duck and cover!' shouted Cypher.

'Will you please leave the QUACK out of this?'

KABOOM! The German Concussion Gernade rattle exploded. Cypher had managed to cover Ashlyn but he was knocked cold by the blast.

When he woke up, he found 'Collinwood' in orbit. Worse, he was faced with an array of Micro-bots with an attitude. This was stange because he hadn't brought any microbots on the ship and in any case, micro-bots are not known for back talk.

Cypher tried desperately to communicate with Jaws and Wombat, but the Microbots refused to let him. He wondered how the rest of Bakka's rescue was proceeding... he might have to teach those microbots a lesson. They didn't know it, but Cypher was much better with a nano sabre than Bakka had been with a lightsaber.

Cypher had a flash of inspiration. He grabbed a micro repair bot and recorded a message that started with 'Obi Wan Kenobi, you're my only hope...' after finishing he showed the micro repair bot in an escape pod with an annoying protocol droid and lauched the pod toward Tatoonie.

To be continued by the POSSE...

What a day! We're back in front!! And the stories are FAN-DAMN-TASTIC!!! :CONGRAT: :CONGRAT: :CONGRAT:

Hey guys - I've actually got a 'rescue' for Bakka in mind - can I go for it? If I 'fail', then anyone can dip in and supply an alternative version, OK?

And sorry about the Orifice, Pontius!!

Hmmm, I don't normally like champ...I mean sparkling wine, but maybe California champ...sparkling wine is better than Australian sparkling wine.

The Pirate Atrocity

The trial

The trial began with a whimper.

The purple duck whimpered, “I can’t remember. I can’t remember.” He sobbed into a wing dramatically. “It all happened so quickly…”

Theoden nodded sagely. “Well let’s explore that shall we, Mr Quack. Take your mind back to the sixth of September. What were your exact movements that day, galactic time?”

The gallery hushed. Quack peered nervously around, and then looked guilty. “Well, it began quietly enough. It was warm on the Retox. The air-conditioning was on the blink. The starlight reminded me of…”

“Get to the point witness”, the judge barked.

Quack wrung his wings. “Of course Your Honour. Well, let me see…”

Quack’s story

The Retox accelerated rapidly around the black hole. But this time, the plan to accelerate into the past came to nought.

Helmsman Hurley screamed hysterically. “Captain, we’re being sucked in! We’ve cut it too fine. Too close to the gravity pull…” The Retox shuddered and rocked and cried as if in pain. The black void was close. Too close.

Quack stayed calm because he had to.

“Divert power to the integrity field. Now! Oops, no, sorry. Not the integrity field. The um, I meant to say to the thrusters. Yes, divert power to the thrusters!”

“It’s too late Captain! She’s got us…we’re entering the singularity… noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo ooooooooooooooooooooo.”

The Retox was cruelly caught by the crushing gravity and hung, poised, between the ship’s final doom, and its possible salvation. It was neither destroyed, nor yet safe. The shuddering stopped. Time slowed, and slowed. And stopped.

Days passed.

And then. With a blink the crew gasped and drew a breath together. And another. The Captain twitched and quacked “Are we…?”

Hurley looked at his instruments and twiddled a few dials. “Captain, I- I don’t understand. We’re out of the singularity…we’re in space. Normal space! We’re free!”

The crew cheered. Quack looked thoughtful, or at least tried to. Duckbills don’t generally show much emotion at the best of times. “We must have been thrown free by an x-ray particle pulse emitted in a space-time distortional flux.”

The Bundy Bear looked perplexed, as bears often do. “Captain…?”

Quack rolled his eyes. “Cypher, what don’t you understand? Think of it this way. Rs defines the "Event Horizon" surrounding the black hole's singularity. Events occurring inside Rs are invisible to the outside universe and anything closer to the singularity than Rs can never leave the black hole. In effect, the Event Horizon hides the singularity from the outside universe. So, the Event Horizon marks the "Point of No Return" for objects falling into a Black Hole. But we didn’t pass the Event Horizon for some reason. An x-ray particle pulse emitted in a space-time distortional flux could never leave the singularity but was nonetheless sufficient to bump the Retox out. Is that clear?”

Cypher mumbled something that Quack chose to ignore.

The trial

Theoden pursed his lips. “You are saying that is your alibi? At the time in question you were in the Event Horizon of a Black Hole?”

Quack nodded with relief. So often his explanations weren’t understood or indeed, believed. “Absolutely correct. The Retox wasn’t anywhere near the atrocity.”

Theoden sighed. This was going to be a difficult trial. Theoden signalled there were no further questions of the witness, and Quack slunk away.

“The next witness. I call Killa Koala to the stand.”

Killa walked to the stand. Pillows were quickly placed on the seat and Killa clambered up.

“Now Mr Koala, please indicate to the Court where you were on the sixth of September.”

Killa looked around guiltily. “Ha ha. The sixth? Gosh, that was days ago wasn’t it. And I have to tell the truth you say? Well…”

Killa’s story

Killa sipped his Pinot and then smiled ingenuously at Wombie. “But Wombie, I really like Treylis, stealthfrequency, TheoLeo and of course Jimmy Chung… I admit they are above me in skill and dedication. But I am big enough to admit that they deserve to be. Really, I just hope that kryofx and vincible who are challenging for my position in the top 25 give me a real run for my money. To be honest, I think all honest competition is fun.”

Wombat nodded. His gentle wombat eyes sparkled as he looked at the koala in admiration. “Killa, that’s a great attitude to have. I’m really proud of you. If only more animals could be like you and actually enjoy the competition and the camaraderie. I’m going to tell Jaws what you’ve just said”. Wombat waddled off to find Jaws.

Killa turned to the shadowy assassin hovering nearby. “The people I just named. Kill them. Kill them all.” The red wine glass snapped in Killa’s paw. The shadowy assassin bowed and slunk away, slyly.

The trial

Theoden pursed his lips. “You are saying that is your alibi? At the time in question you were planning the assassination of your immediate rivals?”

Killa grinned with relief. “Exactly. I didn’t have time to commit atrocities, even if I’d been invited.” Killa’s face darkened. “And I wasn’t invited.”

Rigid with anger, Theoden clumped to the Prosecutor’s table and looked at his witness list. “Get out koala. Next witness, I call Jaws the Wayfarer.”

Jaws leaped up and circled the jury before perching on the witness chair.

Theoden crossed his arms and stared at the White Pointer. “Please proceed. Indicate to the Court where you were on the sixth of September.”

Jaws smacked his lips suggestively and winked at the jury. The jury blanched.

Jaws' story

Jaws staggered against the bar and dropped his bottle of Becks. “Eryaknow Wombieeeeeee. Why won’t the chicksssssss come acrossss.” Hiccup.

Wild looked askance at Jaws. “Can’t answer that one, Jaws. Maybe ‘cause we frequent bars where there are none? And what happened to that little temptress you were chatting to earlier?”

Jaws looked around the pub from red rimmed swollen eyes. He picked…something out of his gleaming white teeth. It looked like a pair of panties. “Can’t remember Wombieeee. But we’s been everywhes…yea?”

Wild held up a paw and ticked off his fingers. “Tonight we’ve drunk at the Shelbourne, Cargo Bar, Cruise Bar, Jacksons, Marble Bar, Slip Inn, The Irish Bar, Civic, 3 Wombats, Union, Percy's, Greenwood, Commodore, Crows Nest Hotel, the Nag’s Head and then were thrown out of the Greenwood. It would have been cheaper to drink at home, and Mrs Wombat does a delicious hot chocolate. And she knows some very nice lady wombats, and you could do worse.”

Jaws looked confused. “Tasty? I seem to remember gettin’ lucky at the Greenwood?”

Wild looked ill. “Yea. And then you groped her and discovered she was a tranny.”

“Oh right.” Jaws giggled. “She wasn’t too bad though was she?”

Wild Wombat sighed. “Come on, Jaws. Let’s get you to The Stoned Crow.”

The boys left the pub and staggered down the street. Jaws burped and then pushed his way to an empty doorway. Wombat looked away. It had been a long, long night, and it wasn’t over yet. He had been married for some years now and just wasn’t used to this.

The trial

Theoden snorted. “I’m not touching that one. No further questions Mr Wayfarer. Um, as my final witness, I call the accused, Pontius Bruin Pilot.”

The Court Sergeant called out “Captain Pilot to the stand.”

Captain Pilot strode to the stand with a defiant glare at the jury.

Theoden glared at Pontius. Pontius returned the glare. Theoden stroked his beard, and said “So Mr Pirate King, are you proud of the actions of your pirates?”

Gerakken stormed to his feet. “I object.”

“Objection sustained” said the Judge. “Mr Rohan, refrain from such questions.”

Theoden grimaced. “As you wish Your Honour. Captain Pilot, what are the rules of engagement for your…troops? In…battles, shall we say?”

Pontius looked innocently at the jury. “First rule is to cause no civilian deaths at all. Second rule is to cause no enemy deaths, or the barest minimum. Third rule is to only board ships running contraband or carrying weapons of mass destruction such as Terror Stars. Fourth rule is…”

“That will be enough Captain” said Theoden with a wave of his hand. “Play the recording of the atrocity.”

The pirate leaned into the freighter cockpit and looked aft.

"Hello? HELLOO? Anyone home? If I don't see someone in thirty seconds, I'm rolling a grenade down there..."

A Torian head suddenly poked into the cockpit. Bloodnut waved him forward.

"Come on, little fella. Step up to the plate, don't be afraid. You know what? You people have given us a lot of trouble. I think we're going to have to impound your freighter. Now, if you people behave yourselves, we might let you live."

The Torian got on his knees and said something.

"The rocket launcher took out half your escape pods? How many extra people have you got?"

The Torian pointed to himself, then held up three fingers.

"Fine, get three of your buddies up here."

The Torian yelled out, and three more appeared, grinning like idiots.

"Brewbelly, if you would be so kind..."

The gunner immediately arced up with his minigun. By the time he was finished, there wasn't much left of the Torians.

"Was that necessary?" asked the cameraman.

"Let me tell you something. Things always get a bit chaotic when we show up, and running short on escape pods is sure to drive people into a panic. You know what people do when they panic? They break stuff. And guess whose paycheck that comes out off? That's right, mine. Those Torians were dead anyway, we just made it easier on them. And the more stuff we get from each freighter, the fewer freighters we'll have to loot to meet our quota. Do you see now, how kind it was to shoot them?"

The jury reared back in horror. A person in the gallery vomited, which caused a chain reaction. The sound of puking could be heard around the courtroom. A little person of the Fellowship screamed and fainted, and fell into a splash of vomit. Bakka of the Evil Empire happily laughed.

Theoden turned to Pontius. “And so have these pirates been arrested and tried by your pirate courts? Has justice been done?” Theoden turned to the jury and flung his arms wide. “I put it to you, members of the jury, that this monster before you has turned a blind eye to such atrocities, nay has endorsed them, nay has encouraged them, nay has ordered them. He must be punished. He must be found guilty. He is guilty of the charges laid before this Court: the Fellowship International Court of Ethical Behaviour. I rest my case.”

Theoden turned and sat in his Prosecutor’s chair with a flourish. He had the Pirate King on a platter.

Gerakken stood and came around the Defence table thoughtfully. He turned and looked at the jury speculatively. Then looked at Pontius. With hands behind his back, he asked “Captain Pilot, to whom do the rules of engagement apply?”

Pontius squinted at Gerakken doubtfully. “To humans of course.”

Gerakken nodded. “No further questions Your Honour.”

Gerakken turned to the jury. “Friends, citizens, countrymen, lend me your ears; I come to acquit Captain Pilot, not to praise him. The evil that men do lives after them; the good is oft interred with their bones; so let it be with the Captain. The noble Diplomat Ray who brought these charges has told you the Captain was ambitious and cruel: if it were so, it was a grievous fault, and grievously has the Captain answered it. And Ray is an honourable man. Yet there is one small detail missing from the Prosecution. One small element of the charge which undoes the whole Prosecution case.”

The jury, still crying and sniffling, leaned forward. The Court Sheriff with a bucket of vomit, stood to one side.

Gerakken held up the criminal charges. “Read them well, members of the jury. Crimes against Humanity! Take another look at the recording. Are Torians humanity? Are they not aliens? How then can the Captain be guilty of crimes against humanity, when no humans were touched? I rest my case.”

The Judge banged his gavel. “Indeed, Mr Gerakken, you are most correct. I must advise the jury that the Captain must be acquitted of these charges. Case dismissed.”

“Order in the court”, yelled the court sergeant. The pirates hugged each other and cracked open a bottle of champ…Californian sparkling wine. Theoden wept silent tears of frustration.

It was another glorious day in the annals of G.R.O.S.S. in a summer that never ended.

Damn physics equation didn't translate.
