Pirates of the Southern Seas

Pirates of the Southern Seas

Dreams

Dropbear was a dreamer. Not a dreamer of petty dreams such as dreams of wealth acquisition and being really nasty to people. But a dreamer of castles, and Princes and dragons and those are the best dreams of all.

But Dropbear can also be crazy and evil and shy and jealous and do horrible things. In other words he is a bit like pretty much everyone.

This tale is unusual because I can tell you the ending: Dropbear tried to repent of these evil ways. He wanted to stop being an evil, dreaming anti-hero. He wanted to do some good. But why did Dropbear want to be selfless and good? That needs some explanation.

The Freedom Force Pub

Dropbear was a Commander of the Freedom Force. He had fought missions and done his best, although his best was not always good enough. He loved his country and his mates, and he liked his new found adorableness. But he wanted more.

He wanted to be a ruthless irascible pirate like Pontius, or a conniving and handsome Spymaster like Gerakken, or a super-organised and respected Supreme Leader like Ray the Wanderer, or the President of the CariElf Fanclub like MM77, or a loveable and wise wombat like Wild Wombat. But he was none of those things, and never would be.

In other words, Dropbear was feeling a bit down and a bit jealous, and maybe a bit unloved. To stifle a sob he took a swig of a rather nice Kiwi pinot and looked around the bar. His current mates were here: a small group, loyal and true. The nightly chess game had ended with Bakka beating Ajm37 again.

Dropbear knew that he and Hurls would drink each other under the table before this night was through: he had found a good Shiraz, which Hurls would appreciate. But Dropbear also had another agenda for this night: he wanted to unburden his soul. And who else to do that with, than one’s mates?

As well, he had an ending to make: and a new beginning too.

Earlier

Dropbear’s Private Hell

Dropbear dropped the message crystal in disbelief. The moving image winked out. Yet, he picked the message crystal up again, and this time, replayed it, time and again. Afterwards, he had some thinking to do. With a heavy heart, he entered his battleaxe, the CariElf, and took her into space.

An Evil Pirate

Dropbear was evil and loved nothing better than to bribe and wheel and deal.

He measured the pirate with his eyes. The pirate could be suborned: Dropbear could see that in an instant. The question was at what cost? And with how much effort?

The gold, reflected in the pirate’s eyes, was a sparkle that held no lustre. But the pirate could not see that. “Arr. Gold. Bright and yellow, hard and cold. Heavy to get and light to hold.” The pirate squinted at Dropbear. “What must ah do, evil one, for the prize ya offer me?” Dropbear gazed back, with a forlorn look: “The price is high. But not so high that one such as you would not pay the price. Betrayal, spying, murder and mayhem. And…especially information. A bargain at any price!”

The pirate nodded. “Oh yes, a small price to pay for gold in the hand”. The pirate spat in his other hand and offered it to the bear. “Let’s shake adorable little bear”.

Dr Quinn’s Consulting Rooms

Dr Quinn was misunderstood. Long had she practiced and with quite good results. True, she had often misdiagnosed Pontius, but he made her nervous. She could not diagnose under pressure.

She cackled wildly. “Ah raven what shall we do? Our small collection of animals has dwindled to naught. How shall we continue our experiments, eh?” She whacked the dissection table with her scalpel. Dr Quinn’s raven fluttered and squawked. Quoth the Raven, “Nevermore!”

“Why Raven, do you admonish me?” She laughed gaily. “Animals of the woods we need, or better yet, talking animals! Yes, large talking animals. Or dare I dream…a man. MUHAHAHAHA”. She laughed a little insanely and drew the scalpel across her palm, with tenderness and a little madly.

The raven looked at the red, red blood in the flickering candlelight.

CariElf’s Temple

He walked down the boulevard, the memories almost overpowering. The fights, the tragedies, the characters, the Pres! The Temple shone with such a light as he approached: a light of clarity and goodness.

How did I leave the path of goodness so quickly, wondered Dropbear. How easily evilness beckons and then sucks one dry. He had fought his monsters and lost and could never return to the fold of the Viscountess. Or perhaps he could. No man can truly know the course of time, he thought.

But not yet. The pirate had been a useful spy on the Ship of Doom. Dropbear now had verification of the claims that had been made in the message crystal. “The burden I bear is too great”, wailed Dropbear. “The knowledge that I have, I can no longer hold and stay sane. I must confess, if only to my mates”.

Dropbear took one last soulful look, and left the Skowbo swamps, forlornly.

From the shadows the Pres watched him leave: “You shall return Vice Pres” he murmured. “And she shall heal your soul. Goodbye for now adorable, little bear” he shouted into the dank, swamp air.

The CariElf swept up into the sky and departed the planet, sadly.

Jimmie and Peggy-Sue

Peggy-Sue nodded enthusiastically. “I love Star Trek, and especially Captain Janeway. The power, the command, the authority”. The inflection on the last word made the waiter wince and move quickly past the couple’s table.

Foolishly, Jimmie wasn’t listening: “Yes and science fiction…”
“Oh, Jimmie. I love SciFi, the goofy stories and…and…all…that stuff”.
Jimmie was in seventh heaven. He had finally, he had truly, found his soul mate.

The Ship of Doom: The Officers’ Mess

CypherPax was being led out again. Mrs Pax stood at the door of the Officers’ mess, waiting patiently. She clutched a rolled-up magazine. Pontius shuddered: he knew how much pain a rolled-up newspaper could do: let alone a Marie Claire!

“Ah mate”, he said, “How’s the eye?” CypherPax looked from his good eye, silently imploring. Silently he mouthed ‘save me’. Pontius shook his head somewhat sadly, the Paxes had not been married long, and Cypher still had some learning experiences to suffer.

Cypher slumped as the waiters led him towards his doom: “The festering has stopped” he muttered, just before the door closed.

Pontius shook the Pirate Times and settled down for a read. The plush armchair enveloped him. Gerakken sat down beside him, somewhat stiffly: “Pontius, where was that banging coming from…” Pontius shook his head again: “Ya don’t want to know”.

Some minutes later, Pontius gasped: “Would ya look at this Gerras!”, inclining his head towards an article that only he could see.

Gerakken looked up sharply. He had his reports to flick through and was tiring of Pontius’ constant references to popular culture. “Who’s done what to whom?” he asked, concisely.

Pontius was oblivious. “Why, huh, gee, that’s funny…” He petered out. Gerakken was wise to this strategy, but could not help himself. “What, what, WHAT?”
Pontius looked up puzzled. “Um, gosh Gerras…settle down”. Pontius read out the article, which was directed at pirates and so was short and in very simple English. They looked thoughtful. “So the mutants are in turmoil! How odd.”

Jimmie’s Wedding

Young Jimmie’s wedding was spectacular. From the badly dressed bridesmaids, to the photo session in the botanical gardens, every piece had been carefully planned and executed.

Jimmie was beaming. “Gosh Mr Pax, what can I say. It has been magical. We fit like a hand in a glove. Why, my Peggy-Sue may be much older than me, but she has been the best thing that has walked through my front door since sliced bread”. Cypher looked as if he was about to say something, but he felt a presence behind him. “Of course lad”.

Peggy-Sue showed her engagement ring to her friends, Mary-Lou and Janeese. “Yea, it’s nice. It’s unusual. It’s different” they said in unison.

Pontius was leering at the women from a safe distance. He quickly looked around for Mrs Pilot who had momentarily disappeared, before leaning towards Gerakken. “What foxy ladies they are!” Gerakken looked at Pontius quizzically, before he coughed.

Mrs Pilot came up and saw the direction of Pontius’ gaze. “Ponshie!” She studied Pontius’ face very carefully: “They are pretty things aren’t they?” Pontius looked utterly innocent: “Oh, um. Actually, I hadn’t noticed”.

Pontius had learnt that lesson early and well.

The Ship of Doom: The Spymaster’s Coterie

‘Judge a man by his questions rather than by his answers’, thought the Spymaster. ‘Hmmm. I wonder what that means?’

Gerakken looked around his coterie. Spies and weasels, undercover men, standover men, Yor droids and chambermaids. A motley collection to make him proud.
“What news, my friends?” Before they could answer, Gerakken coughed suddenly: his flu was getting much worse.

Dr Quinn and Gerakken

Gerakken could barely lift his weak head. The Elven flu had taken hold of him, firmly.

“Dr Quinn, do you have aspirin?” Dr Quinn looked at Gerakken disconcertingly. “Ah, neurophen then…?” Dr Quinn began to take her blouse off, button by button, all the time licking her lips. In, out, in, out: darted her long, sharp, red tongue.

Gerakken blanched with fear. “Dr Quinn, I am a happily married man, what of your morals?” Dr Quinn shrugged: “Once I had morals. Once I was young”. The last button was undone.

Gerakken squirmed and thrashed. “But what of your ethics as a doctor? What of your doctor’s registration?” The blouse came off: “Once I had ethics. Once I was registered”.

The too-handsome Spymaster began to sob. He knew he should have taken Pontius’ advice and seen Dr Spock instead.

Peggy-Sue

Peggy-Sue sobbed. “There, there” said Mary-Lou with a hidden grin.

Peggy-Sue could not be consoled: “Mary-Lou, it has all changed. Since we married, Jimmie has changed.” This revelation shocked even Mary-Lou.

“If I’d known that the flowers and the nights out every night were going to stop, I’d never have got married!”

Finally

The Freedom Force Pub

Dropbear began his tale slowly, as if he lacked courage to continue.

“Mates, the story I tell you is pitiful, but it is not your pity I seek. This night I shall unburden my soul: and in truth I seek your understanding. I have not been lucky in love and long have I wished for the joy of marriage. The pleasure of sharing hobbies; discussing science fiction books; playing computer games together; all of those things that married couples do”.

The gathered mates nodded solemnly: they too wished to see every single, happy man married.

“Now I am evil, you know that. But I am a little crazy too. Once I lived on Skowbo, and held a position of some repute in the Viscountess’ employ”. The gathered group stirred, for Dropbear rarely spoke of those halcyon days.

“Ah, the adulation, the poetry, the chocolate….and Gerakken. Always Veteran Gerakken”. Dropbear’s chill voice became icy. He stifled a sob. “That handsome, common pirate tormented me. Why, do you know he won every award for his prose? Every one! I quoted Wordsworth for sheep’s sake! Do you think they knew. Or cared?”

Several minutes later Dropbear pulled himself together with some effort. Wombie looked tormented at the strain that showed on Dropbear’s face, the tears matting his fur. He felt Dropbear’s pulse, but let him continue.

“Now a pretty enough lass once visited the Temple. Oh, she was a game one. What a horn bag”. He chuckled. “The times we had...the laughter, the drinking, the late nights cavorting…”
The gathered mates looked both repelled and fascinated.

“But it didn’t last, why, it never does, does it? She left and never returned. I never heard from her again. That is, until this week! The shock! Her message told me all that had happened those many years ago….I have verified what she said of course”

Dropbear straightened and looked ahead without emotion. “This is why I tell you I am leaving the Freedom Force, to join the Pirates”. The group gaped, numb.

“Yea, it is something I must do, to make amends. I was not there when she needed me. She has since married and does not want me now. But our son…”

“You have a son?” asked Wombie quietly.

Dropbear looked down, he could not meet Wombie’s sad, knowing eyes.

“Yes, Peggy-Sue had our son. He was born in the dark recesses of a cargo freighter. The freighter was raided soon after by pirates and our kid was kidnapped. She traced the ship, which did the deed: The Ship of Doom! This is now my destiny! To become a pirate and find my son: to give him the father he never had!”

The gathered mates began crying and hugging as one.
There had been an ending, but a good beginning as well, at least that was how Dropbear felt.

Postscript

Wombie packed his bags thoughtfully. Mates stick together he thought. Hurls came in, and the rest, carrying their bags. “There is one other thing that I didn’t understand last night, Wild Wombat” said Hurley with a frown. “What is Dropbear’s special power?”
Wombie grinned. “Haven’t ya worked it out yet? Why, it’s glamour. When he looks forlorn, ya have to adore him. What a nifty power to have!”

The soon-to-be pirates nodded, thoughtfully. Of course.

I'm not a huge fan of dessert wines, a bit too sweet for my pallet, but if any of the Posse want a tasting evening, I'm happy to oblige... I have about 1,000 bottles and so could do with some help getting through them

That's one long evening!!!

Hmm, any of the Posse in Melbourne? We also have various bottles that cry out for consumption!!

Also, while there are wine recomendations, I will be in Canberra for 2 weeks later this month/next and plan to visit various regional wineries. Any suggestions?

The big thing in Canberra currently is Clonakilla I think... perhaps it should be Clonakilla Koala ... anyway Their Shiraz Voignier is getting rave reviews.

I've tried it once but wasn't that impressed by it. Woudl be interested in your comments if you give it a try.

Thanks toothy one!

Tlaking of sauve, on Staurday night I was actually in the dinner suit, frilly shirt, bow tie, and the wool/cashmere silk/satin lined cloack, for a very fancy funtion at the Winsdor hotel here in Melbourne. My much better half has just finished a 16 month course to become a yoga teacher and it was her graduation. A very fancy deal! (A real change from very, very smelly (field) hockey GK gear I tell you!)

OK, just for fun - some of my favourite cat quotes:

Thousands of years ago, cats were worshipped as gods. Cats have never forgotten this...

Dogs come when they're called; cats take a message and get back to you later...

A meow massages the heart...

Most beds sleep up to six cats. Ten cats without the owner.

Cats are smarter than dogs. You can't get eight cats to pull a sled through snow...

There are many intelligent species in the universe. They are all owned by cats...

I put down my book, The Meaning of Zen, and see the cat smiling into her fur
as she delicately combs it with her rough pink tongue.
Cat, I would lend you this book to study but it appears you have already read it.
She looks up and gives me her full gaze.
Don't be ridiculous, she purrs, I wrote it.

The cat could very well be man's best friend but would never stoop to admitting it...

Dogs eat. Cats dine.

A cat is there when you call her - if she doesn't have something better to do.

Any cat who misses a mouse pretends it was aiming for the dead leaf.

Even if you have just destroyed a Ming Vase, purr. Usually all will be forgiven.

Some people own cats and go on to lead normal lives...

It's really the cat's house--we just pay the mortgage.

Dogs believe they are human. Cats believe they are GOD...

If a cat spoke, it would say things like, 'Hey, I don't see the problem here'...

If you want the best seat in the house, move the cat....

A cat is an attitude with fur.... :)

To Hell and Back again Part 2

Just who's hell is this?

Pontius and the Defiant had penetrated deep into Evil Empire territory when they came upon a small 4 seat corvette.

"Ahhhh lets have some fun sensei" said wombat. Lets Decloak and smash it before it can radio.
Not knowing why they should Pontius gave the approval.
Suddenly over the com...
"Why you wouldn't hit a lady would you?" It was definitely Rainbird aka Lil miss trouble.
Pontius looked over at Wombat and could see his dojo's heart was racing.
Pontius: Surrender and prepare to be boarded, or destroyed.
"Ooooo is that cute little wombat with you? Lower your shields so I can beam over."

Pontius slaps Wombats arm away from the control panel.
"What are you doing? Can't you see they have weapons charged and locked? No match for our shields but they could do major damage with the shields down.
"You of course Rainbird would be asked to take your weapons off-line first," said Pontius. And none of your feminine tricks. I have devised a test for you. To see whether you are indeed worthy as a woman, or not.

Rainbird finally was beamed into the galley Bakka was with her. The wiley old Pirate and Wombat joined them. "Now my dear," said Pontius, you shall proceed to prove your worth by cooking this and the fixins to go with it." Pontius then handed her some steaks. Nooo Problem Rainbird said, how do you want em.
Any real woman would already know.

Pontius, Bakka, and Wombat went to the table. Soon Came out a great meal of Pasta, Steak, Au Gratin Potatoes and such. And each person's steak was cooked exactly the way they wanted it.

"Not just yet." Pontius said. Bakka, you switch steaks with me. Rainbird, you switch with Wombat.

Bakka bit into his Steak... Ptuuuueeyyyy. Out it spat. Rainbird was next. She tried to chew it... Ptuuuuuuueyyyy....

"POISONED!!! Yelled Wombat and drew his sword. "I WOULD HIT A LADY WHO TRIED TO POISON ME!!!" Yelled Wombat.

Bakka drew his light sabre.

"Sit down all of you." Pontius said.

Rainbird was in tears. "Why I don't understand, I followed the recipe and it's not poisoned. I followed the directions..er recipe

AHA!!!!! BETTY CROCKER ON THE POTATATOES AND PASTA THEN!!! AND GREEN GIANT ON THE VEGIES...!!!! SEEMS OUR WOMAN HERE IS A BAG IN THE BOX TYPE COOK.!!! Directions indeed. You lose the test there rainbird.

"No No, Another chance, give me another chance, I love that cute little wombat." Rainbird called "I don't understand what happened to the steak. It was perfect.

"Perfect except for one thing dearie. That was British Steak!!! Any Aussie woman worth anything should have caught that right away." Pontius Said.

"CURSE YOU PIRATE. YOU FOILED ME THIS TIME," screamed rainbird. "That wasn't fair. I want another chance."

Pontius obliged by tossing a pair of jeans with a rip in the knees. "How would you fix these," He said.

Without hesitation Rainbird whipped out a department store credit card.
AHA!!! WHAT NO SEWING SKILLS EITHER? FOILED AGAIN VIXEN!!!" That kitchen must have been a living hell for the likes of you.

Pontius then whipped out the transmorgifrier and set it to reveal. A grey beam shot out of it and it revealed inside the bird a snake.

"So snake, you are slitherin aren't you!!!!" shouted Wombat. "Wait till Killa hears of this."

No!!! I am not. He's my brother-in-law... and.... and.

Silence wretch!!!!! Shouted Pontius. You are no real woman!!. Bakka and Rainbird then Drew their weapons as did Pontius and Wombat.

"I can call security right now but this will be much more fun," Said Pontius. Pontius then Zorched Bakka back into a bat. "Remember that lil quip you made there Bakka? That if you were a bat you'd take the wombat?" Nows your chance to prove it."

"Pontius, you're dead. One scratch from my poisonous beak and you're dead. You'll pay for the living hell you put me through in the kitchen. Bwahahahahhaha!!!."

"Don't you mean your poisonous fangs snake? Bring it on Witch. Bring it on."

To be continued by me:

OK Jaws. Here is a step by step guide to how I play small maso. -Set start stats to 60% diplomacy; 30% reseach; 10% weapons. Speed is irrelevant on small maps I reckon. Diplomacy is everything with my style of game.-Government is industrialists. 20:20 production.-Planets are on rare or uncommon, although my last was on common (or whatever its called).-Set other civs to evil. (I always play evil)-Control + N until there is another habitable planet nearby.-Set sliders to 100% 50% on research and 50% on ships.-Research to diplomacy ASAP. (about 7 turns)-After colonization over, build 1 scout and explore.-Trade techs with everyone. If minor civs build Diplomatic Translator it is heaven! Once I trade techs for that, my diplomacy is over 100% The other civs then trade techs very easily.-With the weaker civs, try to trade techs for freighters and/or ships. (Hard but not impossible) I try to buy ships rather than build them.-Research unusual techs too, so I can trade with all civs. Sometimes a good tech can trade for 4-5 different ones.-To build/keep close relationships, gift 1 UP vote to aliens regularly.-Then I try to rush research to battleships.-At some point I change sliders to start building planetary improvements. Usually after I can build the Fusion Plant. I don't try to build wonders at all until mid-game.-Trade with freighters with the nastiest civ to prevent war.-Once mid-game approaches I blockade minor civs with cheap ships to prevent aliens getting them. And prepare combat transports to alpha strike the most powerful civ or the weakest. Once most powerful civ is gone, the game is won.
End of quote

I went with Populists
+20 diplo
+20 morale

Then I chose Econ +10
Social Prod +10
Research +20
Diplo +60.

The +10 econ costs two. +15 costs 4. So the first plus econ is cost effective. Remember, econ bonuses come right off the top. Science and the others 2/3 must be paid for 1/3 right off the top.

Please note: This leaves you vulnerable in the extreme to influence early. And you won't have time to build influence stuff on your planets (nor should you, it all sucks) So when you go early in the game, look for a sector with one or two good planets. Also I like to start toward the middle but with a definite way back to a corner without a major civ in the way. Also, make sure you're not in the dense part of the galaxy or you will be out influenced fast. Took me only 2 cntrl-n's to get exactly what I wanted.

Let me tell you that plus 80 diplo works wonders. The Carinoids actually give me money for things on maso!!! LMAO I just gave one influence point to the Drengin and got the "I must say you humans sure know how to show the proper respect" Relations improved from cool to warm in one swoop!!!! LMAO. And since everyone is evil, votes in teh council don't mean very much. Cuz everyone votes the same.

Oh, and Killa: can you define 'unusual' techs? I usually play a influence/diplo game and aim primarily for 'yellow' and 'green' techs; where I feel the AI goes basically straight for military. They seem to put an inordinate importance on all the 'ship' techs from corvette onwards, disruptors, militarization, etc. Any keys to go for?
End of quote

Drengin usually go propulsion early. Then for the military.

But if you take em early, you can squeeze in photons and phasors and parlay that. Some other techs. Go in yellow straight through to advanced trade. Advanced trade will get you tons of stuff with the ai's Green Advanced environ control is one they leave out early too. Nano-electronics (yellow) is another they don't pay attention to. Cultural trade is valuable (but don't sell it till you got the wonder.

Forget the pink tech's. They all get em fast. You will be trading for those, not with those mostly. The Blue techs generally you can't beat the drengin to early.

Yor usually go industrial.
Torians I can't seem to figure out.

Altarians will go for what they need at the time, it's different every time.

Sighko

The ion storm was bad. Really bad.

The CariElf rocked to and fro. Killa was strapped in to the Captain’s chair but he was still being harshly buffeted. Now he deeply regretted having taken this solo trip, but he had wanted time on his own. Time to think about his ongoing lack of a Veteranship, his title of VP Terro Star which had been cruelly stripped from him after a Gerakken poem, and the unending pressure of playing games and attempting to get huge scores just to tread water in the Metaverse. He was confused. Really confused.

Big drops of liquid nitrogen began to appear. The liquid nitrogen crawled down the ship’s viewscreen. The viewscreen’s wipers were having a battle with the hard rain. Killa peered out of the viewscreen impatiently.

Slowly, he saw an almost indiscernible light in the far distance, a space beacon, signalling an inhabited asteroid close by. Nothing else was about, only the dark void of space.

Killa piloted the CariElf towards the asteroid in desperation. As the ship moved closer, he saw a neon sign more clearly and could faintly make out the large letters, which read "Sighko Space Motel". He parked the ship in the empty spaceship bay and hurried to the Space Motel as the ion storm flashed overhead.

The motel was in a dome, and behind the motel, also in the dome, was a large two-story house. Killa checked out the motel’s office. There was no one present. Killa rubbed his forehead in weariness and frustration, and went around the motel to look at the house. The ion storm flashed overhead fiercely. A path from the motel office lead directly up to this house and there was a light on in one of the upstairs rooms. A woman passed the window, paused, and peered out. She quickly moved away from the window.

Killa, having seen the woman, expected that he would now get some attention. He stood a few minutes waiting, until a young man came running towards the motel. The man motioned Killa in to the motel’s office and closed the door. The noise of the ion storm as it lashed the asteroid dome, dimmed.

Killa eyed the man. There was something sadly touching in his manner, in his look. Killa’s impatience went and he smiled and this made the other man almost smile.

The man was tall and thin, soft-spoken and hesitant. “Dirty night” he said, hesitantly.
“You have a vacancy?” asked Killa. It wasn’t really a question.
“We have twelve vacancies. Twelve rooms, twelve vacancies”. He shrugged.
“Well, I’ll have a room…until this storm passes”.
“For dinner you can come up to the house if you like. My sister-in-law is about to cook a meal”.
“That would be nice. Thank you”.

Killa looked around the motel bedroom. It was good to be out of the CariElf, and he was looking forward to a home cooked meal. He couldn’t cook if his life depended on it. Suddenly the quiet was shattered by the shrill, ugly sound of a woman's voice, raised in anger. “No! I tell you no!” The voice was coming from the house behind the motel. A light was on in an upstairs bedroom and the voice was coming from that room. “I won't have you bringing strange young bears in for supper...” An ugly, sneering note creeped into the voice. “...by candlelight, I suppose, in the cheap erotic fashion of young men with cheap, erotic minds!”
“Sis, please. He’s just a stranger, and hungry, and the ion storm…”
The voice cruelly mimicked the man. “Sis, he’s just a stranger. As if men don’t desire strange bears. Go on, go tell the bear he'll not be appeasing his ugly appetite with my food... or my brother-in-law!”
The man shouted “Shut up. Shut up!” A door slammed, and there was silence.

A half hour later, the man brought a covered tray to Killa’s room and looked apologetic. “I’m…sorry. My sis isn’t… feeling well”.
Killa smiled sadly. “That’s fine. I understand”.

The man motioned Killa to follow him and he led the bear to the room behind the motel office. “Here, let’s eat in here: there’s a table and chairs”.

Killa looked around the room. He was startled by the room. Even in the dimness of one lamp, the strange, extraordinary nature of the room rushed up at him. It was a room of snakes and birds. Stuffed snakes and birds, all over the room, on every available surface, one even clinging to the old fashioned fringed shade of the lamp. The birds were of many varieties, beautiful, grand, horrible, preying. The snakes looked poisonous.

Killa stared in awe and a certain fascinated horror. “Um, look, that’s OK. I’m actually not hungry. Maybe I’ll just go and have a shower and settle down for the night”. Killa left the room and walked to his motel room quickly.

Killa undressed and stepped in to the shower. Over the bar on which hung the shower curtain, could be seen the bathroom door, not entirely closed. Killa washed and soaped himself. He had a worried look in his eyes, but he was also somewhat relieved. Unbeknownst to Killa, the bathroom door slowly opened. The noise of the shower drowned out any sound. The door was then slowly and carefully closed.

The shadow of a woman fell across the shower curtain. Killa's back was turned to the curtain. The white brightness of the bathroom was almost blinding. Suddenly a hand reached up, grasped the shower curtain, and ripped it aside.

Killa turned in response to the feel and sound of the shower curtain being torn aside, and the strange ear splitting music which welled up like nails on a blackboard. A look of pure horror erupted in his face. A low terrible groan began to rise up out of his throat. A hand moved towards Killa. The hand held an enormous bundle of pages. The pages slashed Killa, over and over and over. Over the tearing of the pages came brief gulps of screaming. And then silence. And then the dreadful thump as Killa's body fell in the tub.

The blank whiteness, the blur of the shower water, the hand pulling the shower curtain back. There was one flicker of a glimpse of the attacker. A woman, her face contorted with madness, her head wild with hair, as if she were wearing a fright-wig. And then only the curtain, closed across the tub, and the rush of the shower water. Above the shower-bar the bathroom door opened again and after a moment the front door slammed.

Black, inky water crawled towards the drainhole, and poured down the drain. Black and inky.

After another moment the man came in to the bathroom. “Oh sis! Oh Heavens! Soggy paper and black ink! You’ve scared the bear half to death. Why? Why?”

A strange woman’s voice answered. “How dare he write such cruel things about us. About me! I’ve read them all, and now he’ll think twice about writing his little stories again! Yes, he won’t be writing his crazed, little, pathetic stories with such enthusiasm, will he!”

Killa woke with a start. In a panic, he pushed past the man and ran for the CariElf. Killa knew with a cold certainty the person he had stumbled across. And Killa wasn’t waiting around, ion storm or no ion storm. The CariElf took off and jetted away from the strange and lonely asteroid.

Later, alone in the house, a man sat patiently. He looked around at the bedroom. “They're probably watching me. Well, let them. Let them see what kind of a person I am”. He paused, as a fly landed on his hand. “I’m not going to swat that fly. I hope they are watching. They'll see... they'll see... and they'll know... and they'll say... 'why, he wouldn't even harm a fly...'”

The man continued to gaze ahead into nothing.

Thanks Pontius and Killa, and great storylines too....

You will be pleased to note i finished the small maso... crap score, the key was protection of one of the minor civs, then absorbing the weaker civs, and finally a rush to excalibur tech...

At the end the Torians were in the top corner and i had excalburs lining the edge of teh sector completely penning them in...

Funds were a problem until i attacked the independant league and got 7000 bc for 50 months which allowed me to complete all research and full social production..

I would have still expected a higher score though.. I'll keep playing different end games to try and tweak it.

But thanks once again for the help

Ha, yours more than doubled my score. LMAO. I didn't bother to submit. It would lower my meta score.

OK everyone - I just wanted to present my results after searching through the Posse thread for stories that we might publish on the War of the Worlds site. After sifting through over 1200 posts, can I say that this was bloody impossible, for a start. I was deliberately looking for works that would 'make sense' to someone who had never hung out here, so that left a lot of shorter 'in joke' kind of pieces out. Pontius and Cypher missed out very badly here; a lot of their stuff is great 'connecting' material but wouldn't look right just by itself. Don't let the list below substitute for any kind of judgement on worthiness. Kit's stuff on this thread also didn't get a mention for the same reason. All of us have done shorter paragraphs that were hysterically funny at the time, but wouldn't make sense published in a stand alone sense. I've listed them below and the 'WoW' prefix refers to those we wrote especially following that War of the Worlds storyline (which I intend to return to at some stage!).

Having said that, I found a total of forty four long stories!! That is amazing output, people!! I think such a wellspring of creative activity can only happen in the right environment, with a lot of mutual support and encouragement, so kudos to the whole crew: Killa, Quack, Hurley, Jaws, ajm, Pontius, Cypher and Wild. This is why I came back - you just wouldn't get this kind of support and creativity just anywhere. I love youse all.
