Pirates of the Southern Seas

Pirates of the Southern Seas

Dreams

Dropbear was a dreamer. Not a dreamer of petty dreams such as dreams of wealth acquisition and being really nasty to people. But a dreamer of castles, and Princes and dragons and those are the best dreams of all.

But Dropbear can also be crazy and evil and shy and jealous and do horrible things. In other words he is a bit like pretty much everyone.

This tale is unusual because I can tell you the ending: Dropbear tried to repent of these evil ways. He wanted to stop being an evil, dreaming anti-hero. He wanted to do some good. But why did Dropbear want to be selfless and good? That needs some explanation.

The Freedom Force Pub

Dropbear was a Commander of the Freedom Force. He had fought missions and done his best, although his best was not always good enough. He loved his country and his mates, and he liked his new found adorableness. But he wanted more.

He wanted to be a ruthless irascible pirate like Pontius, or a conniving and handsome Spymaster like Gerakken, or a super-organised and respected Supreme Leader like Ray the Wanderer, or the President of the CariElf Fanclub like MM77, or a loveable and wise wombat like Wild Wombat. But he was none of those things, and never would be.

In other words, Dropbear was feeling a bit down and a bit jealous, and maybe a bit unloved. To stifle a sob he took a swig of a rather nice Kiwi pinot and looked around the bar. His current mates were here: a small group, loyal and true. The nightly chess game had ended with Bakka beating Ajm37 again.

Dropbear knew that he and Hurls would drink each other under the table before this night was through: he had found a good Shiraz, which Hurls would appreciate. But Dropbear also had another agenda for this night: he wanted to unburden his soul. And who else to do that with, than one’s mates?

As well, he had an ending to make: and a new beginning too.

Earlier

Dropbear’s Private Hell

Dropbear dropped the message crystal in disbelief. The moving image winked out. Yet, he picked the message crystal up again, and this time, replayed it, time and again. Afterwards, he had some thinking to do. With a heavy heart, he entered his battleaxe, the CariElf, and took her into space.

An Evil Pirate

Dropbear was evil and loved nothing better than to bribe and wheel and deal.

He measured the pirate with his eyes. The pirate could be suborned: Dropbear could see that in an instant. The question was at what cost? And with how much effort?

The gold, reflected in the pirate’s eyes, was a sparkle that held no lustre. But the pirate could not see that. “Arr. Gold. Bright and yellow, hard and cold. Heavy to get and light to hold.” The pirate squinted at Dropbear. “What must ah do, evil one, for the prize ya offer me?” Dropbear gazed back, with a forlorn look: “The price is high. But not so high that one such as you would not pay the price. Betrayal, spying, murder and mayhem. And…especially information. A bargain at any price!”

The pirate nodded. “Oh yes, a small price to pay for gold in the hand”. The pirate spat in his other hand and offered it to the bear. “Let’s shake adorable little bear”.

Dr Quinn’s Consulting Rooms

Dr Quinn was misunderstood. Long had she practiced and with quite good results. True, she had often misdiagnosed Pontius, but he made her nervous. She could not diagnose under pressure.

She cackled wildly. “Ah raven what shall we do? Our small collection of animals has dwindled to naught. How shall we continue our experiments, eh?” She whacked the dissection table with her scalpel. Dr Quinn’s raven fluttered and squawked. Quoth the Raven, “Nevermore!”

“Why Raven, do you admonish me?” She laughed gaily. “Animals of the woods we need, or better yet, talking animals! Yes, large talking animals. Or dare I dream…a man. MUHAHAHAHA”. She laughed a little insanely and drew the scalpel across her palm, with tenderness and a little madly.

The raven looked at the red, red blood in the flickering candlelight.

CariElf’s Temple

He walked down the boulevard, the memories almost overpowering. The fights, the tragedies, the characters, the Pres! The Temple shone with such a light as he approached: a light of clarity and goodness.

How did I leave the path of goodness so quickly, wondered Dropbear. How easily evilness beckons and then sucks one dry. He had fought his monsters and lost and could never return to the fold of the Viscountess. Or perhaps he could. No man can truly know the course of time, he thought.

But not yet. The pirate had been a useful spy on the Ship of Doom. Dropbear now had verification of the claims that had been made in the message crystal. “The burden I bear is too great”, wailed Dropbear. “The knowledge that I have, I can no longer hold and stay sane. I must confess, if only to my mates”.

Dropbear took one last soulful look, and left the Skowbo swamps, forlornly.

From the shadows the Pres watched him leave: “You shall return Vice Pres” he murmured. “And she shall heal your soul. Goodbye for now adorable, little bear” he shouted into the dank, swamp air.

The CariElf swept up into the sky and departed the planet, sadly.

Jimmie and Peggy-Sue

Peggy-Sue nodded enthusiastically. “I love Star Trek, and especially Captain Janeway. The power, the command, the authority”. The inflection on the last word made the waiter wince and move quickly past the couple’s table.

Foolishly, Jimmie wasn’t listening: “Yes and science fiction…”
“Oh, Jimmie. I love SciFi, the goofy stories and…and…all…that stuff”.
Jimmie was in seventh heaven. He had finally, he had truly, found his soul mate.

The Ship of Doom: The Officers’ Mess

CypherPax was being led out again. Mrs Pax stood at the door of the Officers’ mess, waiting patiently. She clutched a rolled-up magazine. Pontius shuddered: he knew how much pain a rolled-up newspaper could do: let alone a Marie Claire!

“Ah mate”, he said, “How’s the eye?” CypherPax looked from his good eye, silently imploring. Silently he mouthed ‘save me’. Pontius shook his head somewhat sadly, the Paxes had not been married long, and Cypher still had some learning experiences to suffer.

Cypher slumped as the waiters led him towards his doom: “The festering has stopped” he muttered, just before the door closed.

Pontius shook the Pirate Times and settled down for a read. The plush armchair enveloped him. Gerakken sat down beside him, somewhat stiffly: “Pontius, where was that banging coming from…” Pontius shook his head again: “Ya don’t want to know”.

Some minutes later, Pontius gasped: “Would ya look at this Gerras!”, inclining his head towards an article that only he could see.

Gerakken looked up sharply. He had his reports to flick through and was tiring of Pontius’ constant references to popular culture. “Who’s done what to whom?” he asked, concisely.

Pontius was oblivious. “Why, huh, gee, that’s funny…” He petered out. Gerakken was wise to this strategy, but could not help himself. “What, what, WHAT?”
Pontius looked up puzzled. “Um, gosh Gerras…settle down”. Pontius read out the article, which was directed at pirates and so was short and in very simple English. They looked thoughtful. “So the mutants are in turmoil! How odd.”

Jimmie’s Wedding

Young Jimmie’s wedding was spectacular. From the badly dressed bridesmaids, to the photo session in the botanical gardens, every piece had been carefully planned and executed.

Jimmie was beaming. “Gosh Mr Pax, what can I say. It has been magical. We fit like a hand in a glove. Why, my Peggy-Sue may be much older than me, but she has been the best thing that has walked through my front door since sliced bread”. Cypher looked as if he was about to say something, but he felt a presence behind him. “Of course lad”.

Peggy-Sue showed her engagement ring to her friends, Mary-Lou and Janeese. “Yea, it’s nice. It’s unusual. It’s different” they said in unison.

Pontius was leering at the women from a safe distance. He quickly looked around for Mrs Pilot who had momentarily disappeared, before leaning towards Gerakken. “What foxy ladies they are!” Gerakken looked at Pontius quizzically, before he coughed.

Mrs Pilot came up and saw the direction of Pontius’ gaze. “Ponshie!” She studied Pontius’ face very carefully: “They are pretty things aren’t they?” Pontius looked utterly innocent: “Oh, um. Actually, I hadn’t noticed”.

Pontius had learnt that lesson early and well.

The Ship of Doom: The Spymaster’s Coterie

‘Judge a man by his questions rather than by his answers’, thought the Spymaster. ‘Hmmm. I wonder what that means?’

Gerakken looked around his coterie. Spies and weasels, undercover men, standover men, Yor droids and chambermaids. A motley collection to make him proud.
“What news, my friends?” Before they could answer, Gerakken coughed suddenly: his flu was getting much worse.

Dr Quinn and Gerakken

Gerakken could barely lift his weak head. The Elven flu had taken hold of him, firmly.

“Dr Quinn, do you have aspirin?” Dr Quinn looked at Gerakken disconcertingly. “Ah, neurophen then…?” Dr Quinn began to take her blouse off, button by button, all the time licking her lips. In, out, in, out: darted her long, sharp, red tongue.

Gerakken blanched with fear. “Dr Quinn, I am a happily married man, what of your morals?” Dr Quinn shrugged: “Once I had morals. Once I was young”. The last button was undone.

Gerakken squirmed and thrashed. “But what of your ethics as a doctor? What of your doctor’s registration?” The blouse came off: “Once I had ethics. Once I was registered”.

The too-handsome Spymaster began to sob. He knew he should have taken Pontius’ advice and seen Dr Spock instead.

Peggy-Sue

Peggy-Sue sobbed. “There, there” said Mary-Lou with a hidden grin.

Peggy-Sue could not be consoled: “Mary-Lou, it has all changed. Since we married, Jimmie has changed.” This revelation shocked even Mary-Lou.

“If I’d known that the flowers and the nights out every night were going to stop, I’d never have got married!”

Finally

The Freedom Force Pub

Dropbear began his tale slowly, as if he lacked courage to continue.

“Mates, the story I tell you is pitiful, but it is not your pity I seek. This night I shall unburden my soul: and in truth I seek your understanding. I have not been lucky in love and long have I wished for the joy of marriage. The pleasure of sharing hobbies; discussing science fiction books; playing computer games together; all of those things that married couples do”.

The gathered mates nodded solemnly: they too wished to see every single, happy man married.

“Now I am evil, you know that. But I am a little crazy too. Once I lived on Skowbo, and held a position of some repute in the Viscountess’ employ”. The gathered group stirred, for Dropbear rarely spoke of those halcyon days.

“Ah, the adulation, the poetry, the chocolate….and Gerakken. Always Veteran Gerakken”. Dropbear’s chill voice became icy. He stifled a sob. “That handsome, common pirate tormented me. Why, do you know he won every award for his prose? Every one! I quoted Wordsworth for sheep’s sake! Do you think they knew. Or cared?”

Several minutes later Dropbear pulled himself together with some effort. Wombie looked tormented at the strain that showed on Dropbear’s face, the tears matting his fur. He felt Dropbear’s pulse, but let him continue.

“Now a pretty enough lass once visited the Temple. Oh, she was a game one. What a horn bag”. He chuckled. “The times we had...the laughter, the drinking, the late nights cavorting…”
The gathered mates looked both repelled and fascinated.

“But it didn’t last, why, it never does, does it? She left and never returned. I never heard from her again. That is, until this week! The shock! Her message told me all that had happened those many years ago….I have verified what she said of course”

Dropbear straightened and looked ahead without emotion. “This is why I tell you I am leaving the Freedom Force, to join the Pirates”. The group gaped, numb.

“Yea, it is something I must do, to make amends. I was not there when she needed me. She has since married and does not want me now. But our son…”

“You have a son?” asked Wombie quietly.

Dropbear looked down, he could not meet Wombie’s sad, knowing eyes.

“Yes, Peggy-Sue had our son. He was born in the dark recesses of a cargo freighter. The freighter was raided soon after by pirates and our kid was kidnapped. She traced the ship, which did the deed: The Ship of Doom! This is now my destiny! To become a pirate and find my son: to give him the father he never had!”

The gathered mates began crying and hugging as one.
There had been an ending, but a good beginning as well, at least that was how Dropbear felt.

Postscript

Wombie packed his bags thoughtfully. Mates stick together he thought. Hurls came in, and the rest, carrying their bags. “There is one other thing that I didn’t understand last night, Wild Wombat” said Hurley with a frown. “What is Dropbear’s special power?”
Wombie grinned. “Haven’t ya worked it out yet? Why, it’s glamour. When he looks forlorn, ya have to adore him. What a nifty power to have!”

The soon-to-be pirates nodded, thoughtfully. Of course.

Not to dis you or anything, but I've never pegged the Anzacs as our archrivals. I've always thought of you guys as the quirky assassins of the metaverse.
End of quote

pontius,

i didnt say anzac was gross's archrival - just that gross was mine.

Revenge isn't all that good a reason to join an empire. Vendetta's usually hurt those who carry them as much or more than their targets. But despite your stated reasons for the switch above the truth did come out in the end.
End of quote

revenge was just one of many reasons - all the rest hold true. basically, think of it this way - i wanted a more active empire that was in contention, but i knew it wasnt going to be gross. so i looked at the other top five empires.

as a side benefit, my emigration was enough to push the fellowship into first!

friendjosh

ps. this is all in a fun spirit - this is a game after all! a little friendly competition over the metaverse makes things more interesting.

Oh but the pain and anguish you are feeling at not being a part of G.R.O.S.S. So sad. Revenge is more important than Mates. I can feel your pain. Oh it almost makes me want to ask our southern Seas mates not to run you through. But it's their decision.

And we miss ya Josh! It's not too late - the franchise can always use another good man!

Morning everyone! Interesting development - I note the ANZACs are now going to have a private web site and members only forum at some stage soon. Another location empire leaving town?

Killa, Hurley, ajm - how's tricks? Anyone heard from Bakka today?
I haven't. He got stuck, blindsided by a jedi meta and never made it over to the canadian thread. We'll have to write one real quick and free him.
Oh I took the liberty, since none of you were around at the time, of giving the new Anzac emporer an ascendency gift, from all of us on their thread.

G'day Wild One!
Tricks are OK, touch tired, just started teaching a master course in software architecture and the brain is a bit fired! (4 hours straight lecturing etc last night). So not much GalCiv.

The stories and banter are just great! Not my forte even being a SNAG (Sensative New Age Geek LOL )

Playing around with different strategy approaches to game play. Still deciding I want to keep ramping up the difficulty or just stay at painful and try different approaches. :notsure: Did both in the dim past with Civ & SMAC. We shall see.

I note the ANZACs are now going to have a private web site and members only forum at some stage soon.

Interesting I was approached weeks ago about this and suggested I thought the inetrchange on the single location, for forums, was better, but just my opinion.

Well back to work!

Where have you been living lately? "Friendly competition"!!! "All in a fun spirit"!!! The Metaverse showcases all of the bleak problems of the Earth and mans inhumanity to fellow man, writ small.

I have never offered an opinion before, but my view is that it is just dumb. It is not like there is an overwhelming flurry of contact between players in any empire or cross-empire. Particularly now as Galciv is probably entering its sunset period!

Wombie, is there any chance you can help old Bakka out: I'm rushed today!
Hurls/Killa - agree with you re private site for ANZACs - not my style either. Killa - I'll try and back up the bat wherever possible. Hurls - lecturing in software dev - you must teach me how to work my compu-thingy better!

And Killa - ignore my GROSS post last night - hug and kiss your partner so they don't throw any more hissy fits! Dismantle the lounge room Terror Star!

I'm going over to catch Pontius' gift to the ANZACs!

Yup, right after I work out mine!!! Now where was that power switch again...... (ZAP!!!!!!!!!!! Owww!!! More frenzied mutterring and squawking........)

The web page will be public...

the reasoning behind the private forum .. is so that we can try and discuss privatly amongst ourselves about scorring higher games... and other non GalCiv related stuff ...

As many of you others do vie private email's... We will still be active in here.. (very Active) and help out where / when we can.. and stirr up trouble... umm... forget that last bit :)

Why do you think GalCiv is in its sunset... ?

there are many independant web sites/forums out there for other games... why not help spread the word about GalCiv... by getting more websites / forums out there about it...

The fourm on the ANZAC site will have areas where anyone can talk too.. but it'll have a members only area as well...

It could flop .. i duno... but i'm definatly not going to rule out trying new things / options that are out there to try and recruit more ppl into GalCiv and the ANZACS..

I've setup a fileserver on the GalCiv chat Channel.. where ppl who have full irc programs (unfortunatly sdc doesn't support d/loading files {yet}.. maybe it will later) to help promote "The ANZACS" its only there when i'm online and to access it you type in !ANZAC in the Galciv window.. Currently on there .. there is a pici of "THE A.S.S." that ppl can d/load..

It will also be appearing on out web page.. (when i get time to do it)
Fair enough BlueSteel: and I shouldn't have said 'dumb'. I meant to say I think it is unwise and superfluous. But hey, what do I know?

I said that Galciv is in its sunset period because it has been out for quite awhile (in game terms) and I would expect active participants on the boards and Metaverse will start to decrease. More active players may even burn out.

And at certain times, the ANZACs thread wasn't used for days at a time. If every empire was like the Canadians or Europeans, there wouldn't be much chatter across the empires. That is the very real danger I think to having secret areas where players can just disappear.

Too, what tactics could there possibly be which are so secret and special that the empire itself (not just individual players) do not want to 'share'. I personally can't see the rationale for it. I respect that there are players who don't want to share their special tactics or whatever, and good luck to them, and no-one can make them share of course. Half the fun is looking at other people's tactics and maybe trying them out, to increase enjoyment of the single player game. If this was a cut-throat multi-player game, well, maybe that would be different.

Now, I am not writing to stir up matters that have already been discussed at length (but in different circumstances) in other threads. I am ONLY commenting on ONE of your proposals. I think what you have done in a short time (and your style) is great! Maybe things would have turned out differently had you been around a few weeks back. But that is often what happens, when a leader is needed, he or she will step forward out of necessity. That is the ANZAC way bro.

Is ajm henpecked?
Does ajm have 10 or more children?
What animal do you like, or wish you were?
Do you enjoy being evil?
What are your pet hates?
Are you short or tall?
And add anything else that could give me a handle on your character!

Hurley,

Sounds like we have similiar professional interests, I'm a system architect by trade.

I'm burned out because I decided to play developer this week. I'm still working from Tuesday morning (and it's about 6:40 am on Wednesday). Customer had a workflow that was taking 41 minutes to return due due to poor design and some of the worse SQL I have ever seen. It's now taking around 37 seconds...

It would probably be a good example of what not to do for your class. Before I refactored it, it was a 24,000 line Java CLASS (singular!) with several methods in 4-5 k line range. Fortunately for me, about 40% was commented out code... and another 20% was embedded HTML. LOL

I wish I could take credit for being a good programmer, but this was more a case study for what a poor maintenance cycle does to an organization. I've been working on it since Friday and it's been kind of fun. But this is why I don't program anymore, I tend to get carried away....

The sad thing is I sort of like computer burn out. I can share this, because I think there's a lot of technies on this board... and I'm overtired.

Great response ajm - good to hear from you mate! Another Collingwood supporter...aarrgghh...don't mention the footy, don't mention the footy....

Cypher - that sounds absolutely AWFUL...it would probably be worse if I understood it....

War of the Worlds

"We have to go back." Hurley looked around the briefing table at his comrades. "We have to face them and figure out what happened. Either the others are dead, or just not coming back, and we owe it to them."

Killa, ajm and Wombat nodded somberly. The Pegasus was in a parking orbit around Palain Nine, the smallest planet in the system. Scanners showed no trace of Yor missile emplacements and the pirates were careful - this time there were to be no surprises. They resolved to continue the mission - tracing the supposed legendary crystal to Iversonia, finding a Yor stockpile of Budweiser beer, and a napkin leading them here; to the last resting place of the Freedom Force Avatar, to the dissolution of their nascent mutant fellowship, and to their resurrection at the hands of their GROSS mates.

"This ship is not the Avatar. I've taken a preliminary look at the specs - she will withstand a hundred Yor missiles." said Killa. It was true - the Precursor ship's fabulous armaments and shielding should keep them safe from harm. "It's time to make this mean something - let's go!"

The Pegasus flashed into low geosynchronous orbit around Palain Seven and immediately cloaked. The four teleported down to the main population centre. The Frozen Icicle was relatively easy to find - there were so few amenities on this godforsaken ball of ice that most of the population found their way here eventually.

The four quietly slipped into the cantina, merging easily with the Yor, Drengin and human inhabitants of the planet...mostly miners and labourers. "We need a distraction...need to get into the back and have a look around." said Wombat. Killa smiled - that smile - and sauntered to the bar, whistling an old Billy Joel tune. He began warming up the crowd as Wombat had seen so often before, stories, laughter, quotations...the crowd gravitated towards him like the proverbial moths to the flame. Waves of palpable glamour rolled off the koala and drew the wretched audience to him.

Hurley, ajm and Wombat took the chance to slip behind the bar and without stopping for alcohol, discovered a long corridor leading to a storage room at the back of the cantina. They peered cautiously through the last door, left slightly ajar, and witnessed a senior Yor officer and two guards strolling around a large block of ice.

The Yor officer turned on the guards: "Fools! Why was the crystal embedded in this block of ice? What possible use to us is it in this condition?"

"Well Controller Nadreck, we were given instructions that the crystal was to be protected from harm at all costs and remain inert. The insta-freeze process seemed the easist way to achieve that", the guard smoothly replied.

"Besides", tittered the other guard, "Did you expect us to handcuff it? Tie it to a chair? It becomes SO difficult to rise in the Yor legions when one's superior has an IQ approaching room temperature! And on Palain Seven, room temperature is so very lo[ZING!]

Nadreck adjusted his aim slightly to direct his laser pistol at the remaining guard. "I trust you have no other constructive criticism to offer? No? Have the crystal loaded onto my corvette and I will figure out what to do with it later." With that, Nadreck strode out of the rear exit door of the cantina, leaving the remaining guard with the crystal embedded in ice.

"What now?" whispered Hurley. "NOW YOU DIE!" boomed a voice - a Yor guard had appeared behind them, pointing a laser rifle directly at Wombat. Suddenly, the Yor went down under an atomic piledriver delivered from behind by Killa Koala! He picked the Yor up and swung it into the near wall, delivering a forearm jolt as the mechanical beast bounced back off the wall. The Yor crumpled to the floor, Killa pinning it and counting "1...2...3...Yeah!...er...um..oh..."

Wombat grasped his friend's shoulder. He knew, of course, about Killa's history. He first saw him at a mud wrestling competition, long before they had established a friendship. The man's moves were lethal. Wild Wombat knew that Killa still occasionally wore the spangly tights of his wrestling days, but didn't like to talk about it with his friends, preferring to let his glamour to do the talking. "You saved us, mate - again. That's what counts." Wombat gave Killa a hug.

"That's one down - what about the other?" Hurley suddenly pointed to ajm. The air around ajm became alive...shimmering...his outline became fluid...and reformed in the perfect shape of a Yor guard. "A shapeshifter!" exclaimed Wild Wombat. He noticed a small tattoo on the "Yor's" shoulder. "Yes," said ajm, "that tattoo is an image very...special...to me, and I had it done with iridium ink - I can't shift it now. Still, want to see my favourite one?"

The Yor image, shifted, faded, blurred...and was replaced by a reptilian nightmare of thorns and armour.

"A Moloch!" breathed Hurley.

The six foot long thorny devil grinned - a frightening sight - and strolled into the storage chamber; the great spiked tail slamming into the remaining Yor guard and managing to throw it through the wall and into the street beyond.

Hurley looked at the block of ice - and violet lasers erupted from his eyes. They made a minimal dent in the ice casing around the crystal. "Too thick for me!" he cried.

Wild Wombat looked carefully at the ice casing...and started to sing:

We're havin a heat wave
A tropical heat wave
The temperature's risin
It isn't surprisin....

The block started to melt..slowly at first, then with more speed. Sounds of footsteps echoed down the corridor. The block had melted just enough to extricate the crystal when the door burst open to reveal a company of Yor guards - deciding that their mission was successful, the four activated their emergency teleporters and beamed back to the ship....

...to the sound of klaxons roaring an emergency signal through the great vessel. ajm reached the bridge first: "Three Yor squadrons have just appeared on the scanners - must have been hidden behind the inner planets - they were waiting for us to come back!"

"Evasive pattern Alpha 1-9!" yelled Wombat as the crew took up battle stations. "Killa - can we withstand the firepower of thirty battle cruisers?"

"Haven't read that far into the manual, Wombie!"

"They've triangulated our position and are closing..." mused Hurley, "Wombat...we have only one option."

"I know - head straight for the sun. Give us a passing orbit that will swing us through the upper trophosphere and slingshot us around...when we clear the trophosphere, activate the trans-warp drive - that ought to give us enough velocity to leave those Yor cruisers for dust."

The great ship flew like an arrow for the sun at the heart of the Palain system. Great shuddering sounds erupted from the ship as the tight orbit around the sun pulled huge gravitational forces on the outer hull. "WWoommbbaatt...llooookk aatt tthhee ccrryyssttaall..." mumbled Killa.

The strange crystal began glowing, emitting light though the visible spectrum, bouncing off the walls of the command deck. A sudden flash...the crystal itself disappeared...and the Yor pursuit fleet was left far behind. The pirates felt a wash of emotional..energy...flow through their mightly vessel...complex...hard to describe...

The crew allowed the vessel to coast while they surveyed the damage. "We came through pretty unscathed," remarked Hurley.

Indeed.

A rich contralto voice resounded through the vessel.

The pirates looked around. "OK..quit playing games."

This is no game. I thank you for my release.

Wombat scratched his head. "Look...I've had three mysterious things happen already today, and my head's starting to hurt...just what's going on?"

The sun's close radiation energised my millennial transformation. Every thousand years, I change my form. Now I invest your ship.

"You mean you spent the last thousand years as a crystal?"

That choice was...boring. This seems much more fun. I have examined your data banks, and am aware of what led you to this point. By the way, you got stiffed on the merchandising end of the franchise...the T-shirts are the sweetest plum.

"How come computer voices are always female? asked Wombat.

Let's see...I'm ageless...omniscient...what else would I be?

"Now I'm not sure we want some chick ordering us around on our pirate stuff!" exclaimed Wombat.

And who do you think controls the life support system? Care to step outside and discuss it? Fear not - I have already developed a liking for you. You are the Pirates of the Southern Seas. The GROSS posse! I sense adventure in the air. Life as a crystal was soooo boring I'm up for something different.

By the way, my port thruster needs cleaning. And there's a lovely area in the aft cargo hold that would be ideal for a pond, maybe with a gazebo and a pathway. And dinner is at six - sharp.

ajm looked at the others and sighed. "Well, having a sentient ship is great, and all - but we got no leads on Palain Seven about the Yor and their plans."

"Ah, but we did!" said Killa, placing a bottle on the table.

"About bloody time!" said Wombat. "Oww..it's that red stuff you like, Killa...come on mate..."

"No Wombat - not my red stuff. This is beaujolais. The Yor were drinking it - and nothing else - in the Frozen Icicle."

"Boogeewhat?"

Beaujolais: Regional wine produced only on France, European Union, Sol.

"Hey - you are a know-it-all, aay?

It's on the label, Wombat.

"Here's the thing, Wombat - why are the Yor stockpiling cheap American Budweiser beer, and yet drinking nothing but French wine?"

There...that feels much better...

OK, posse! I feel a certain flatness in the Metaverse at present. No sound from the farmers, tension between empires.

Read and write stories. Play game. Have fun. No trashing others. I love youse all. Even Eagles supporters ;p

So what do we have:

2 brids (ajm, Hurls)
1 Double Blues (Wombie)
1 Eagles (Bakka)
1 Swans (Killa)

Well, it should be an interesting Finals series.

Does anyone think it curious that no Queenslanders play Galciv? And no rugby supporters (have to check with Quack).

End of quote

I would like to state, as a Carlton supporter, that I have absolutely no interest in the AFL finals series. This disclaimer is valid for the next ten years unless redeemed earlier. Thank you.
