Pirates of the Southern Seas

Pirates of the Southern Seas

Dreams

Dropbear was a dreamer. Not a dreamer of petty dreams such as dreams of wealth acquisition and being really nasty to people. But a dreamer of castles, and Princes and dragons and those are the best dreams of all.

But Dropbear can also be crazy and evil and shy and jealous and do horrible things. In other words he is a bit like pretty much everyone.

This tale is unusual because I can tell you the ending: Dropbear tried to repent of these evil ways. He wanted to stop being an evil, dreaming anti-hero. He wanted to do some good. But why did Dropbear want to be selfless and good? That needs some explanation.

The Freedom Force Pub

Dropbear was a Commander of the Freedom Force. He had fought missions and done his best, although his best was not always good enough. He loved his country and his mates, and he liked his new found adorableness. But he wanted more.

He wanted to be a ruthless irascible pirate like Pontius, or a conniving and handsome Spymaster like Gerakken, or a super-organised and respected Supreme Leader like Ray the Wanderer, or the President of the CariElf Fanclub like MM77, or a loveable and wise wombat like Wild Wombat. But he was none of those things, and never would be.

In other words, Dropbear was feeling a bit down and a bit jealous, and maybe a bit unloved. To stifle a sob he took a swig of a rather nice Kiwi pinot and looked around the bar. His current mates were here: a small group, loyal and true. The nightly chess game had ended with Bakka beating Ajm37 again.

Dropbear knew that he and Hurls would drink each other under the table before this night was through: he had found a good Shiraz, which Hurls would appreciate. But Dropbear also had another agenda for this night: he wanted to unburden his soul. And who else to do that with, than one’s mates?

As well, he had an ending to make: and a new beginning too.

Earlier

Dropbear’s Private Hell

Dropbear dropped the message crystal in disbelief. The moving image winked out. Yet, he picked the message crystal up again, and this time, replayed it, time and again. Afterwards, he had some thinking to do. With a heavy heart, he entered his battleaxe, the CariElf, and took her into space.

An Evil Pirate

Dropbear was evil and loved nothing better than to bribe and wheel and deal.

He measured the pirate with his eyes. The pirate could be suborned: Dropbear could see that in an instant. The question was at what cost? And with how much effort?

The gold, reflected in the pirate’s eyes, was a sparkle that held no lustre. But the pirate could not see that. “Arr. Gold. Bright and yellow, hard and cold. Heavy to get and light to hold.” The pirate squinted at Dropbear. “What must ah do, evil one, for the prize ya offer me?” Dropbear gazed back, with a forlorn look: “The price is high. But not so high that one such as you would not pay the price. Betrayal, spying, murder and mayhem. And…especially information. A bargain at any price!”

The pirate nodded. “Oh yes, a small price to pay for gold in the hand”. The pirate spat in his other hand and offered it to the bear. “Let’s shake adorable little bear”.

Dr Quinn’s Consulting Rooms

Dr Quinn was misunderstood. Long had she practiced and with quite good results. True, she had often misdiagnosed Pontius, but he made her nervous. She could not diagnose under pressure.

She cackled wildly. “Ah raven what shall we do? Our small collection of animals has dwindled to naught. How shall we continue our experiments, eh?” She whacked the dissection table with her scalpel. Dr Quinn’s raven fluttered and squawked. Quoth the Raven, “Nevermore!”

“Why Raven, do you admonish me?” She laughed gaily. “Animals of the woods we need, or better yet, talking animals! Yes, large talking animals. Or dare I dream…a man. MUHAHAHAHA”. She laughed a little insanely and drew the scalpel across her palm, with tenderness and a little madly.

The raven looked at the red, red blood in the flickering candlelight.

CariElf’s Temple

He walked down the boulevard, the memories almost overpowering. The fights, the tragedies, the characters, the Pres! The Temple shone with such a light as he approached: a light of clarity and goodness.

How did I leave the path of goodness so quickly, wondered Dropbear. How easily evilness beckons and then sucks one dry. He had fought his monsters and lost and could never return to the fold of the Viscountess. Or perhaps he could. No man can truly know the course of time, he thought.

But not yet. The pirate had been a useful spy on the Ship of Doom. Dropbear now had verification of the claims that had been made in the message crystal. “The burden I bear is too great”, wailed Dropbear. “The knowledge that I have, I can no longer hold and stay sane. I must confess, if only to my mates”.

Dropbear took one last soulful look, and left the Skowbo swamps, forlornly.

From the shadows the Pres watched him leave: “You shall return Vice Pres” he murmured. “And she shall heal your soul. Goodbye for now adorable, little bear” he shouted into the dank, swamp air.

The CariElf swept up into the sky and departed the planet, sadly.

Jimmie and Peggy-Sue

Peggy-Sue nodded enthusiastically. “I love Star Trek, and especially Captain Janeway. The power, the command, the authority”. The inflection on the last word made the waiter wince and move quickly past the couple’s table.

Foolishly, Jimmie wasn’t listening: “Yes and science fiction…”
“Oh, Jimmie. I love SciFi, the goofy stories and…and…all…that stuff”.
Jimmie was in seventh heaven. He had finally, he had truly, found his soul mate.

The Ship of Doom: The Officers’ Mess

CypherPax was being led out again. Mrs Pax stood at the door of the Officers’ mess, waiting patiently. She clutched a rolled-up magazine. Pontius shuddered: he knew how much pain a rolled-up newspaper could do: let alone a Marie Claire!

“Ah mate”, he said, “How’s the eye?” CypherPax looked from his good eye, silently imploring. Silently he mouthed ‘save me’. Pontius shook his head somewhat sadly, the Paxes had not been married long, and Cypher still had some learning experiences to suffer.

Cypher slumped as the waiters led him towards his doom: “The festering has stopped” he muttered, just before the door closed.

Pontius shook the Pirate Times and settled down for a read. The plush armchair enveloped him. Gerakken sat down beside him, somewhat stiffly: “Pontius, where was that banging coming from…” Pontius shook his head again: “Ya don’t want to know”.

Some minutes later, Pontius gasped: “Would ya look at this Gerras!”, inclining his head towards an article that only he could see.

Gerakken looked up sharply. He had his reports to flick through and was tiring of Pontius’ constant references to popular culture. “Who’s done what to whom?” he asked, concisely.

Pontius was oblivious. “Why, huh, gee, that’s funny…” He petered out. Gerakken was wise to this strategy, but could not help himself. “What, what, WHAT?”
Pontius looked up puzzled. “Um, gosh Gerras…settle down”. Pontius read out the article, which was directed at pirates and so was short and in very simple English. They looked thoughtful. “So the mutants are in turmoil! How odd.”

Jimmie’s Wedding

Young Jimmie’s wedding was spectacular. From the badly dressed bridesmaids, to the photo session in the botanical gardens, every piece had been carefully planned and executed.

Jimmie was beaming. “Gosh Mr Pax, what can I say. It has been magical. We fit like a hand in a glove. Why, my Peggy-Sue may be much older than me, but she has been the best thing that has walked through my front door since sliced bread”. Cypher looked as if he was about to say something, but he felt a presence behind him. “Of course lad”.

Peggy-Sue showed her engagement ring to her friends, Mary-Lou and Janeese. “Yea, it’s nice. It’s unusual. It’s different” they said in unison.

Pontius was leering at the women from a safe distance. He quickly looked around for Mrs Pilot who had momentarily disappeared, before leaning towards Gerakken. “What foxy ladies they are!” Gerakken looked at Pontius quizzically, before he coughed.

Mrs Pilot came up and saw the direction of Pontius’ gaze. “Ponshie!” She studied Pontius’ face very carefully: “They are pretty things aren’t they?” Pontius looked utterly innocent: “Oh, um. Actually, I hadn’t noticed”.

Pontius had learnt that lesson early and well.

The Ship of Doom: The Spymaster’s Coterie

‘Judge a man by his questions rather than by his answers’, thought the Spymaster. ‘Hmmm. I wonder what that means?’

Gerakken looked around his coterie. Spies and weasels, undercover men, standover men, Yor droids and chambermaids. A motley collection to make him proud.
“What news, my friends?” Before they could answer, Gerakken coughed suddenly: his flu was getting much worse.

Dr Quinn and Gerakken

Gerakken could barely lift his weak head. The Elven flu had taken hold of him, firmly.

“Dr Quinn, do you have aspirin?” Dr Quinn looked at Gerakken disconcertingly. “Ah, neurophen then…?” Dr Quinn began to take her blouse off, button by button, all the time licking her lips. In, out, in, out: darted her long, sharp, red tongue.

Gerakken blanched with fear. “Dr Quinn, I am a happily married man, what of your morals?” Dr Quinn shrugged: “Once I had morals. Once I was young”. The last button was undone.

Gerakken squirmed and thrashed. “But what of your ethics as a doctor? What of your doctor’s registration?” The blouse came off: “Once I had ethics. Once I was registered”.

The too-handsome Spymaster began to sob. He knew he should have taken Pontius’ advice and seen Dr Spock instead.

Peggy-Sue

Peggy-Sue sobbed. “There, there” said Mary-Lou with a hidden grin.

Peggy-Sue could not be consoled: “Mary-Lou, it has all changed. Since we married, Jimmie has changed.” This revelation shocked even Mary-Lou.

“If I’d known that the flowers and the nights out every night were going to stop, I’d never have got married!”

Finally

The Freedom Force Pub

Dropbear began his tale slowly, as if he lacked courage to continue.

“Mates, the story I tell you is pitiful, but it is not your pity I seek. This night I shall unburden my soul: and in truth I seek your understanding. I have not been lucky in love and long have I wished for the joy of marriage. The pleasure of sharing hobbies; discussing science fiction books; playing computer games together; all of those things that married couples do”.

The gathered mates nodded solemnly: they too wished to see every single, happy man married.

“Now I am evil, you know that. But I am a little crazy too. Once I lived on Skowbo, and held a position of some repute in the Viscountess’ employ”. The gathered group stirred, for Dropbear rarely spoke of those halcyon days.

“Ah, the adulation, the poetry, the chocolate….and Gerakken. Always Veteran Gerakken”. Dropbear’s chill voice became icy. He stifled a sob. “That handsome, common pirate tormented me. Why, do you know he won every award for his prose? Every one! I quoted Wordsworth for sheep’s sake! Do you think they knew. Or cared?”

Several minutes later Dropbear pulled himself together with some effort. Wombie looked tormented at the strain that showed on Dropbear’s face, the tears matting his fur. He felt Dropbear’s pulse, but let him continue.

“Now a pretty enough lass once visited the Temple. Oh, she was a game one. What a horn bag”. He chuckled. “The times we had...the laughter, the drinking, the late nights cavorting…”
The gathered mates looked both repelled and fascinated.

“But it didn’t last, why, it never does, does it? She left and never returned. I never heard from her again. That is, until this week! The shock! Her message told me all that had happened those many years ago….I have verified what she said of course”

Dropbear straightened and looked ahead without emotion. “This is why I tell you I am leaving the Freedom Force, to join the Pirates”. The group gaped, numb.

“Yea, it is something I must do, to make amends. I was not there when she needed me. She has since married and does not want me now. But our son…”

“You have a son?” asked Wombie quietly.

Dropbear looked down, he could not meet Wombie’s sad, knowing eyes.

“Yes, Peggy-Sue had our son. He was born in the dark recesses of a cargo freighter. The freighter was raided soon after by pirates and our kid was kidnapped. She traced the ship, which did the deed: The Ship of Doom! This is now my destiny! To become a pirate and find my son: to give him the father he never had!”

The gathered mates began crying and hugging as one.
There had been an ending, but a good beginning as well, at least that was how Dropbear felt.

Postscript

Wombie packed his bags thoughtfully. Mates stick together he thought. Hurls came in, and the rest, carrying their bags. “There is one other thing that I didn’t understand last night, Wild Wombat” said Hurley with a frown. “What is Dropbear’s special power?”
Wombie grinned. “Haven’t ya worked it out yet? Why, it’s glamour. When he looks forlorn, ya have to adore him. What a nifty power to have!”

The soon-to-be pirates nodded, thoughtfully. Of course.

FriendJosh joined...wait for it...MWC!

And here I thought Melbournian families were like football dynasties: the children followed the father's club unto the end of time. You must rule the roost with a light hand.

I did notice in the Collingwood/Carlton game that the brids rose as one for several dozen goals.

Wombie: I've got your wombat family at 10 nippers, hence the pitter-patter of 40 little feet. Its quite deafening!

Oh, and with small maps one's overall score does settle down eventually. Chiacow's score doesn't move and he's about 113 games now.

MWC?!?!?!?! Wha...? OK, I can't explain that...

Yes, I give my kids unbelievable free reign in choice of footy teams - I bet Hurley's all barrack black and white; no lack of discipline in Collingwood households.

10 kids...[shudder]...I'd be a poor destitute wombat...still, at least here it's all pretend, right? Right?

And are there any baby koalas in the nest?

“We don’t need to compromise our principles, because they don’t have the slightest bearing on what happens to us anyway”.

Had to laugh went I read that. The image of Calvin sitting in the bathtub saying that after loudly announcing he wouldn't violate his principles by taking a bath still brings a chuckle.

As a side note: This strip was a direct result of Watterson's fight with the comic syndicate to prevent licensing Calvin & Hobbes products. Watterson won and will not license such products. So if you own ANYTHING C & H, other than the published books or newspaper clippings of the strip, it is by definition, bootleg.

Enough Seriousness! As compensation, I present this transcript of my favorite daily strip:

*Calvin is sitting behind an upturned cardboard box. Written on the front are the words: "Swift kick in the butt: $1.00" Hobbes walks up.*

H: "How's business?"
C: "Terrible."
H (rolling eyes): "That's hard to believe."
C: "I can't understand it. Everybody I know needs what I'm selling!"

Finally, sorry for being OT. :)

PS: This is a response to a post two pages back, made by Killa. I would've responded sooner, but I don't hit the boards as often as you guys do!

[Sigh] I remember that time...head out to the theatre, movies, whatever...on a whim, no need to consider the kids...Sunday morning papers in bed, undisturbed 'til lunchtime...Oh God.. (:( ...must stop...

mk31bolo:
Oh ho. I got the quotes from the Internet of course. I've never read the comic strips so I had no idea of the context of the quotes. I used about 4 quotes of Calvin's in that story.

Three more I liked but couldn't fit in were:

Dad are you vicariously living through me in the hope that my accomplishments will validate your mediocre life and in some way compensate for all the opportunities you botched? - Calvin

“MOM, CAN I SET FIRE TO MY BED MATTRESS?”
“No, Calvin.”
“CAN I RIDE MY TRICYCLE ON THE ROOF?”
“No, Calvin.”
“Then can I have a cookie?”
“No, Calvin.” (She’s on to me.”)

This game lends itself to certain abuses.

The last one sorta applies to Galciv when people start talking about cheesy tactics. LOL

Killa everyone knows it's just G.R.O.S.S. that uses cheesy tactics. And only when we've taken the lead. That's just meta rule #1 around here.

HEHE talking bout Calvinball there.

I miss that comic strip. But I'm glad he ended it rather than drag on 10 years after it ceased being innovative and funny like Peanuts.

Enter the Dweeb

After the latest haul from Hobart, the Pegasus met up with the Doom and Wild Wombat strode up the gangplank to undertake his formal orientation. He stumbled on the last step, crashing into KitWarrior.

"Welcome to the Doom, boys!" Kit showed them to the small galley, alongside the spacious and attractive fully serviced bar. Wombat rushed to take in the alcoholic ambiance, but stood on Koala's paw in the process.

Kit explained the purpose of the indoctrination, and Wombat was so excited expounding on his chances of success that he ended up sweeping Hurley's martini into his lap.

"WOMBAT!" they all cried. "Take off that eyepatch!!"

The wild one reluctantly took off his pirate eyepatch and folded it away in his pocket. He resolved to practice more with it, as he thought he looked rather dashing, and after all - pirates wore eyepatches, didn't they?

The Long and Winding Dweeb

EBZ took Wombat aside and led him down to the armoury. "I understand that you, like me, enjoy taking your Metaverse triumphs in small, bite-size pieces." said EBZ. "You will be my disciple in this, Wombat. You will play until the streets run with blue Altarian blood...yes, the Altarian scum..." EBZ's face twisted with rage; his eyes glazed over - struggling for breath, he panted: "...rage...taking...over...medic...cupboard..."

Wombat reached inside the cupboard - and found only a bottle of Jack Daniels. He quickly brought it to the champion's mouth, and after a few swallows, EBZ was again able to speak. Wombat put the bottle back in the cupboard. EBZ tapped a few keys on the compu-thingy.

"You see, Wombat? In the time it took you to put that bottle away, I completed ANOTHER 10,000 point small game. You will learn this skill. But you will also need to be well armed - and I have a gift for you."

EBZ presented Wombat with a laser cutlass; a finely forged glittering instrument of destruction. Wombat proudly whipped it into the scabbard at his right hip. Unfortunately, EBZ had not yet given him a scabbard, and he had pierced a hole right through his best pair of jeans. He could also feel a squelchy sensation between the toes of his right foot, but he was too brave to look down.

EBZ sighed slowly, and took another swig from the bottle. "Remember - we be da crrranking bruvvers, mon! Now go and make me proud!"

The Once and Future Dweeb

Staffa looked straight at Wild Wombat. "It falls to me to give you the best preparation we can for the battles that lie ahead." Staffa revealed a portable DVD-thingy and pressed his thumb onto the security lock that activated the device. "This contains the collected strategy from all the GROSS masters over the generations, from EBZ, Coffeedragon, Pontius, Gerakken, myself and many others. It is: THE BIG BOOK OF GROSS. Wombat...Wombat...WAKE UP!!!"

Wombat stirred himself. :S-s-sorry Staffa, I just got a bit lost after that...strakay...stretigggy...I'm just not sure..."

Staffa sighed. "That is all, Wombat. You may go."

Wombat was slightly disappointed, as he felt he was really coming to grips with the technical equipment on the Pegasus. Mind you, everyone raved about the CD-burner, and Wombat didn't think it made very good toast.

I can't get no Dweeb

Wombat was in his cabin when he heard the voice. "Well Wombat, it is time you learned what the Spymaster can do for you."

"WOW!" said Wombat. "I mean, I can hear your voice, but can't detect you anywhere! You really ARE the master spy, aren't you! All those times I thought I had you - exploding sheep, drop bears, gangsta-bananas, ninja-Wiggles - and you were always a step ahead of me! I am deeply honoured by your skills, great Spymaster...tell me more!"

"Wombat."

"Yes, Gerakken?"

"Wombat...pirates don't usually wear two eyepatches at once."

"Oh." Wombat took off the eyepatches he had been practising with, and looked into the eyes of the Spymaster. The Spymaster sighed, patted his new recruit on the shoulder, and left the cabin quietly.

All Dweebs lead to here

Wild Wombat strolled down the corridor to Pontius' cabin. The great man was sitting behind his desk, idly tossing a autographed baseball that normally rested in a small stand. "Wombat...you need to understand what it takes to lead a successful franchise. See that large red lever beside you?"

Without further ado, Wombat pulled the big red lever back and forward.

"Humph...yes. Fortunately, that is a practice lever that I installed for Gerakken. When he gets tense about command, I let him come in here and practice with the large red lever - Wombat! Wipe that smirk off your face! - because he never knows when he will have to pull it for real."

"This will complete your initial orientation, Wombat - there are many others for you to meet here...our female staff, Cypher, Darth Bob, the whole gang...and of course...your medical with Dr. Quinn...[he shuddered at this]...but that will do for now. We were very pleased with that excellent Tasmanian beer you dropped off, although you can keep the wine. Now go - and carry GROSS to victory across the Metaverse!!"

Pontius and Gerakken watched as the Pegasus grew smaller in their scanners.

Reunion and War: Part II

Data to Exchange

At last the Draconia was fully reintegrated with the Survey Ship of Doom. Max disconnected from the mainframe and headed for Kit's quarters. Along the way, the little android analyzed the rudeness of his master's command to stay behind and secure the large vessel. After all, Max's primary programming was for small corvettes! As he hastily turned a corner, he nearly collided with a pair objects moving the opposite direction. It was Twoforty and Rainjah! The three reunited friends squealed with beeps and whistles. They had so many stories to exchange! The three droids determined the most logical destination to be their master's quarters and so off they went.

Just prior to their arrival, the exchange turned to Kit's new quest. Max listed off all the requirements including the confrontation with Dropbear. Twoforty and Rainjah suddenly stopped and turned their visual scanners towards each other. Something did not compute.

Appointments All Dall

"So how's James, Dr. Spock?" Wombie giggled as he hopped off the table.

"Yeah, and how's Bones?" Hurls added.

The animals continued to chuckle as the doctor searched through several drawers. He had already heard every last Star Trek joke. No matter what crack the animals made, Dr. Spock kept a pleasant smile.

"What made you decide to have plastic surgery on your ears, Doc?" Killa thought about the irony of his joke. Underneath the mask he looked forlorn, but no could see.

Dr. Spock's hands went over several razor-sharp operating tools. They shined with clinical cleanliness. Very very very sharp tools. Towards the back of the drawer he found what he was looking for.

"Here you go boys! Lollipops for everyone!" The pirates reached up and grabbed one each. "Strange how I always end up doing the second part of everyone's physical exam. No matter. Run along now and have good one!"

The animals made their way out and passed Dr. Spock's next appointment, Peggy-Sue.

"Good to see you again, Peggy-Sue! What made you decide to rejoin the crew?"

Peggy-Sue looked around the office nervously. "Oh I missed all the excitement, romance, and... authority." She coughed.

"Yes, the Doom always provides a thrilling ride. Please, have a seat." He gestured to a chair. "But how does Jimmie feel about all this?" A look of concern replaced his pleasant smile.

"Well... Doc... that's why I'm here." Peggy-Sue sat on the edge of the chair. Her anxiety was obvious. "You see... I want to start a family."

"I see." The doctor reached over to the counter and grabbed a clipboard. "Well let's start with some preliminary questions, shall we?"

Peggy-Sue nodded.

"Have you ever experienced a pregnancy, Peggy-Sue?"

"Well..."

Booze Run!

So many bottles, kegs, cans, crates, and barrels to count. So many numbers to punch into the computer. The supply sergeant sighed. Before entering the next batch of numbers, a young woman approached his desk. It was Mary-Lou.

"Hello Mary... uh..."

"Lou," she said with a smile.

"Yes! Mary-Lou! Sorry about that. What can I do for you?"

"Well, corporal..."

"Sergeant," he corrected with a smile.

She giggled. "Sergeant. Sorry. I have some credits I'd like to use on refreshments for a party. A party for Peggy-Sue's return!" she added.

"Ahhh... am I invited?" he asked with a smirk.

"Of course, sergeant!" She twirled her hair with her playful fingers.

"Well! We just got a fresh batch of booze in from a raid on Hobart. Care for some James Boag Premium beer? Maybe a good Shiraz or two? Perhaps even some bottles of Kiwi pinot?"

She blushed.

"Aw heck! I'll load 'em all up on a service droid for ya!"

The big bash was certainly going to be... interesting?

Girl Talk

Scent pebbles fell out of the cage and onto the floor. The raven tilted its head and listened to them scatter.

"Careful, raven." Dr, Quinn warned. "You'll wear out your welcome."

"That's a rather odd pet to have," Janeese commented.

The doctor chose to ignore her friend's statement and instead continued with the topic at hand. "So tell me more about Peggy-Sue's little secret."

"Oh I can't tell you anymore! You'll just have to wait until the party to find out the rest."

"Games," the doctor thought to herself. The doctor liked games... very much so now. "Well I can't figure out why she would make up such a silly story just for a man. Is she that unhappy with Jimmie?"

"Yes, Jimmie is a bore and she misses the pirate's life. And I never said she made that story up!" Jeneese giggled.

"Laughter," the doctor thought to herself. The doctor used to giggle like that... long ago.

At a Loss for Data

The three droids cross-referenced all of the available information. They had a message originating from Peggy-Sue, the Killa's portfolio, an intercepted transmission from the Doom to an unidentified location, and Peggy-Sue's medical records. Despite their combined programming power, they lacked a key ingredient - human emotion. Because they didn't understand human motivations, they couldn't make heads or tails of the data they had gathered. All they knew was that something didn't compute. It was decided that they would present their findings to their master as soon as he was off-duty, which was two minutes ago.

Kit strolled into his quarters to find his three droids waiting just inside the doorway.

"What's up?"
