Pirates of the Southern Seas

Pirates of the Southern Seas

Dreams

Dropbear was a dreamer. Not a dreamer of petty dreams such as dreams of wealth acquisition and being really nasty to people. But a dreamer of castles, and Princes and dragons and those are the best dreams of all.

But Dropbear can also be crazy and evil and shy and jealous and do horrible things. In other words he is a bit like pretty much everyone.

This tale is unusual because I can tell you the ending: Dropbear tried to repent of these evil ways. He wanted to stop being an evil, dreaming anti-hero. He wanted to do some good. But why did Dropbear want to be selfless and good? That needs some explanation.

The Freedom Force Pub

Dropbear was a Commander of the Freedom Force. He had fought missions and done his best, although his best was not always good enough. He loved his country and his mates, and he liked his new found adorableness. But he wanted more.

He wanted to be a ruthless irascible pirate like Pontius, or a conniving and handsome Spymaster like Gerakken, or a super-organised and respected Supreme Leader like Ray the Wanderer, or the President of the CariElf Fanclub like MM77, or a loveable and wise wombat like Wild Wombat. But he was none of those things, and never would be.

In other words, Dropbear was feeling a bit down and a bit jealous, and maybe a bit unloved. To stifle a sob he took a swig of a rather nice Kiwi pinot and looked around the bar. His current mates were here: a small group, loyal and true. The nightly chess game had ended with Bakka beating Ajm37 again.

Dropbear knew that he and Hurls would drink each other under the table before this night was through: he had found a good Shiraz, which Hurls would appreciate. But Dropbear also had another agenda for this night: he wanted to unburden his soul. And who else to do that with, than one’s mates?

As well, he had an ending to make: and a new beginning too.

Earlier

Dropbear’s Private Hell

Dropbear dropped the message crystal in disbelief. The moving image winked out. Yet, he picked the message crystal up again, and this time, replayed it, time and again. Afterwards, he had some thinking to do. With a heavy heart, he entered his battleaxe, the CariElf, and took her into space.

An Evil Pirate

Dropbear was evil and loved nothing better than to bribe and wheel and deal.

He measured the pirate with his eyes. The pirate could be suborned: Dropbear could see that in an instant. The question was at what cost? And with how much effort?

The gold, reflected in the pirate’s eyes, was a sparkle that held no lustre. But the pirate could not see that. “Arr. Gold. Bright and yellow, hard and cold. Heavy to get and light to hold.” The pirate squinted at Dropbear. “What must ah do, evil one, for the prize ya offer me?” Dropbear gazed back, with a forlorn look: “The price is high. But not so high that one such as you would not pay the price. Betrayal, spying, murder and mayhem. And…especially information. A bargain at any price!”

The pirate nodded. “Oh yes, a small price to pay for gold in the hand”. The pirate spat in his other hand and offered it to the bear. “Let’s shake adorable little bear”.

Dr Quinn’s Consulting Rooms

Dr Quinn was misunderstood. Long had she practiced and with quite good results. True, she had often misdiagnosed Pontius, but he made her nervous. She could not diagnose under pressure.

She cackled wildly. “Ah raven what shall we do? Our small collection of animals has dwindled to naught. How shall we continue our experiments, eh?” She whacked the dissection table with her scalpel. Dr Quinn’s raven fluttered and squawked. Quoth the Raven, “Nevermore!”

“Why Raven, do you admonish me?” She laughed gaily. “Animals of the woods we need, or better yet, talking animals! Yes, large talking animals. Or dare I dream…a man. MUHAHAHAHA”. She laughed a little insanely and drew the scalpel across her palm, with tenderness and a little madly.

The raven looked at the red, red blood in the flickering candlelight.

CariElf’s Temple

He walked down the boulevard, the memories almost overpowering. The fights, the tragedies, the characters, the Pres! The Temple shone with such a light as he approached: a light of clarity and goodness.

How did I leave the path of goodness so quickly, wondered Dropbear. How easily evilness beckons and then sucks one dry. He had fought his monsters and lost and could never return to the fold of the Viscountess. Or perhaps he could. No man can truly know the course of time, he thought.

But not yet. The pirate had been a useful spy on the Ship of Doom. Dropbear now had verification of the claims that had been made in the message crystal. “The burden I bear is too great”, wailed Dropbear. “The knowledge that I have, I can no longer hold and stay sane. I must confess, if only to my mates”.

Dropbear took one last soulful look, and left the Skowbo swamps, forlornly.

From the shadows the Pres watched him leave: “You shall return Vice Pres” he murmured. “And she shall heal your soul. Goodbye for now adorable, little bear” he shouted into the dank, swamp air.

The CariElf swept up into the sky and departed the planet, sadly.

Jimmie and Peggy-Sue

Peggy-Sue nodded enthusiastically. “I love Star Trek, and especially Captain Janeway. The power, the command, the authority”. The inflection on the last word made the waiter wince and move quickly past the couple’s table.

Foolishly, Jimmie wasn’t listening: “Yes and science fiction…”
“Oh, Jimmie. I love SciFi, the goofy stories and…and…all…that stuff”.
Jimmie was in seventh heaven. He had finally, he had truly, found his soul mate.

The Ship of Doom: The Officers’ Mess

CypherPax was being led out again. Mrs Pax stood at the door of the Officers’ mess, waiting patiently. She clutched a rolled-up magazine. Pontius shuddered: he knew how much pain a rolled-up newspaper could do: let alone a Marie Claire!

“Ah mate”, he said, “How’s the eye?” CypherPax looked from his good eye, silently imploring. Silently he mouthed ‘save me’. Pontius shook his head somewhat sadly, the Paxes had not been married long, and Cypher still had some learning experiences to suffer.

Cypher slumped as the waiters led him towards his doom: “The festering has stopped” he muttered, just before the door closed.

Pontius shook the Pirate Times and settled down for a read. The plush armchair enveloped him. Gerakken sat down beside him, somewhat stiffly: “Pontius, where was that banging coming from…” Pontius shook his head again: “Ya don’t want to know”.

Some minutes later, Pontius gasped: “Would ya look at this Gerras!”, inclining his head towards an article that only he could see.

Gerakken looked up sharply. He had his reports to flick through and was tiring of Pontius’ constant references to popular culture. “Who’s done what to whom?” he asked, concisely.

Pontius was oblivious. “Why, huh, gee, that’s funny…” He petered out. Gerakken was wise to this strategy, but could not help himself. “What, what, WHAT?”
Pontius looked up puzzled. “Um, gosh Gerras…settle down”. Pontius read out the article, which was directed at pirates and so was short and in very simple English. They looked thoughtful. “So the mutants are in turmoil! How odd.”

Jimmie’s Wedding

Young Jimmie’s wedding was spectacular. From the badly dressed bridesmaids, to the photo session in the botanical gardens, every piece had been carefully planned and executed.

Jimmie was beaming. “Gosh Mr Pax, what can I say. It has been magical. We fit like a hand in a glove. Why, my Peggy-Sue may be much older than me, but she has been the best thing that has walked through my front door since sliced bread”. Cypher looked as if he was about to say something, but he felt a presence behind him. “Of course lad”.

Peggy-Sue showed her engagement ring to her friends, Mary-Lou and Janeese. “Yea, it’s nice. It’s unusual. It’s different” they said in unison.

Pontius was leering at the women from a safe distance. He quickly looked around for Mrs Pilot who had momentarily disappeared, before leaning towards Gerakken. “What foxy ladies they are!” Gerakken looked at Pontius quizzically, before he coughed.

Mrs Pilot came up and saw the direction of Pontius’ gaze. “Ponshie!” She studied Pontius’ face very carefully: “They are pretty things aren’t they?” Pontius looked utterly innocent: “Oh, um. Actually, I hadn’t noticed”.

Pontius had learnt that lesson early and well.

The Ship of Doom: The Spymaster’s Coterie

‘Judge a man by his questions rather than by his answers’, thought the Spymaster. ‘Hmmm. I wonder what that means?’

Gerakken looked around his coterie. Spies and weasels, undercover men, standover men, Yor droids and chambermaids. A motley collection to make him proud.
“What news, my friends?” Before they could answer, Gerakken coughed suddenly: his flu was getting much worse.

Dr Quinn and Gerakken

Gerakken could barely lift his weak head. The Elven flu had taken hold of him, firmly.

“Dr Quinn, do you have aspirin?” Dr Quinn looked at Gerakken disconcertingly. “Ah, neurophen then…?” Dr Quinn began to take her blouse off, button by button, all the time licking her lips. In, out, in, out: darted her long, sharp, red tongue.

Gerakken blanched with fear. “Dr Quinn, I am a happily married man, what of your morals?” Dr Quinn shrugged: “Once I had morals. Once I was young”. The last button was undone.

Gerakken squirmed and thrashed. “But what of your ethics as a doctor? What of your doctor’s registration?” The blouse came off: “Once I had ethics. Once I was registered”.

The too-handsome Spymaster began to sob. He knew he should have taken Pontius’ advice and seen Dr Spock instead.

Peggy-Sue

Peggy-Sue sobbed. “There, there” said Mary-Lou with a hidden grin.

Peggy-Sue could not be consoled: “Mary-Lou, it has all changed. Since we married, Jimmie has changed.” This revelation shocked even Mary-Lou.

“If I’d known that the flowers and the nights out every night were going to stop, I’d never have got married!”

Finally

The Freedom Force Pub

Dropbear began his tale slowly, as if he lacked courage to continue.

“Mates, the story I tell you is pitiful, but it is not your pity I seek. This night I shall unburden my soul: and in truth I seek your understanding. I have not been lucky in love and long have I wished for the joy of marriage. The pleasure of sharing hobbies; discussing science fiction books; playing computer games together; all of those things that married couples do”.

The gathered mates nodded solemnly: they too wished to see every single, happy man married.

“Now I am evil, you know that. But I am a little crazy too. Once I lived on Skowbo, and held a position of some repute in the Viscountess’ employ”. The gathered group stirred, for Dropbear rarely spoke of those halcyon days.

“Ah, the adulation, the poetry, the chocolate….and Gerakken. Always Veteran Gerakken”. Dropbear’s chill voice became icy. He stifled a sob. “That handsome, common pirate tormented me. Why, do you know he won every award for his prose? Every one! I quoted Wordsworth for sheep’s sake! Do you think they knew. Or cared?”

Several minutes later Dropbear pulled himself together with some effort. Wombie looked tormented at the strain that showed on Dropbear’s face, the tears matting his fur. He felt Dropbear’s pulse, but let him continue.

“Now a pretty enough lass once visited the Temple. Oh, she was a game one. What a horn bag”. He chuckled. “The times we had...the laughter, the drinking, the late nights cavorting…”
The gathered mates looked both repelled and fascinated.

“But it didn’t last, why, it never does, does it? She left and never returned. I never heard from her again. That is, until this week! The shock! Her message told me all that had happened those many years ago….I have verified what she said of course”

Dropbear straightened and looked ahead without emotion. “This is why I tell you I am leaving the Freedom Force, to join the Pirates”. The group gaped, numb.

“Yea, it is something I must do, to make amends. I was not there when she needed me. She has since married and does not want me now. But our son…”

“You have a son?” asked Wombie quietly.

Dropbear looked down, he could not meet Wombie’s sad, knowing eyes.

“Yes, Peggy-Sue had our son. He was born in the dark recesses of a cargo freighter. The freighter was raided soon after by pirates and our kid was kidnapped. She traced the ship, which did the deed: The Ship of Doom! This is now my destiny! To become a pirate and find my son: to give him the father he never had!”

The gathered mates began crying and hugging as one.
There had been an ending, but a good beginning as well, at least that was how Dropbear felt.

Postscript

Wombie packed his bags thoughtfully. Mates stick together he thought. Hurls came in, and the rest, carrying their bags. “There is one other thing that I didn’t understand last night, Wild Wombat” said Hurley with a frown. “What is Dropbear’s special power?”
Wombie grinned. “Haven’t ya worked it out yet? Why, it’s glamour. When he looks forlorn, ya have to adore him. What a nifty power to have!”

The soon-to-be pirates nodded, thoughtfully. Of course.

Dum dummm. Dum dumm. Dum dum dum dum …….

Jaws walked on to the bridge of the retox and saw the newest member of the posse adjusting some particularly cool looking shades.

Turning round he said “Hey Jaws, what do you think, Quack managed to find these for me”.. “even got a matching pair for Ashlyn he did”..

Ashlyn poked her head out from the mass of fur that now belonged to Cypher… “Jawssssieeeeee” she screamed…. “look look look me like daddy” and then started shouting “ahoyyyie maties”

Jaws gave Ashlyn his biggest, toothiest grin and said “Looking good mish moneypenny”, which made Ashlyn squeal even more with delight. “Knock it off Jaws” said Cypher, if Mrs. Pax hears she’ll be round here before you can say shark fin soup”

Jaws gulped and a strange stillness seemed to effect the air. They both paused, and after a moment that seemed like a lifetime but in reality was only a second or two they both breathed a sigh of relief. “The reason I’m here” said Jaws, “After the council of war, I thought it would be a good idea to see what the Canadians are up to, and now that you have transmogrified, I thought you might like to come along as you would blend in nicely”.. “Think we night need to put some fur gel on you to stiffen you up a bit, don’t want those Canadian bears taking the piss out of you, can you imagine, oooooh feel his soft fur, be he got that done in Ottawa” chuckled Jaws

“What do you think” asked Jaws
“bring Ashlyn along, the cameraman will take care of her while we are gone, and we wont be too long, so I’m sure Mrs. Pax won’t find out”

A nervous cool looking bear said “er.. er.. oh damn it.. I wear the pants in this shiphold, or well I used to when I had some to wear, you’re on”, “but I’ll think I’ll leave Ashlyn with Quack, she likes to put her hands around his neck to see just how purple he can get”

“Ok, I’ll see you in the Pointer in a few mins, we need to make a detour to pick up some of the haluci-eucalyptus for Killa”.. “He loves them, and its an absolute riot when he’s had too many”

“I’ll be there bro” said Cypher

Jaws walked out of the bridge

“I’m a lumberjack and I’m OK”
“I sleep all night and I work all day”
“I chop down trees, I wear high heels, suspendies and a bra”
“I wish I was a girlie just like my dear papa”

Cypher just looked bemused

Somewhere in British Columbia

“hello big boy”…. “don’t see many like you around here”

Cypher turned around and in front of him was a cute brown bear… he realised at this piont that he could understand bear talk and was also slightly worried that he thought she looked cute.

“No, babe just got into town” said Cypher, “and I’m also I pirate, like my shades, they give me a certain je ne sais quoi don’t you think” he continued particularly impressed with the way things were proceeding..

“Oooooohhhhh” giggled the she bear, ”you’re from Quebec are you, I hear you half frenchie types make great lovers” and she then licked the side of his face and snuggled up closer towards him.

Cypher was starting to feel unusually aroused, “all this talk of sperm pressure must be getting to me” he thought.

After spitting out the fur gel which Cypher had used to dust himself down, she said throatily “do you have anybody waiting for you back at your cave” and then continued coughing to try and dislodge the sticky substance that was now coating the back of her throat.

This shocked Cypher out of a state of arousal and remembering Mrs. Pax and Ashlyn back at base said “eh..”

Buzzzz buzzzzz

“Saved by the buzz” thought Cypher. It was Jaws
“Cypher, I’m outside a bottle shop called beers of the galaxy, can you come over, there are some very strange movements going on”
“Be right over” said Cypher, and with that he checked the co-ordinates on his mobile teleportation and manicure device and disappeared in front of the she bear.

She looked stunned, turned around scratched herself on a nearby tree, then wandered off.

Cypher appeared next to Jaws.

“You sweating?” said Jaws, and with a laugh said “You better let that thing go down before we enter the shop”

Cypher blushed with embarrassment, but it was Ok as Jaws didn’t notice. Being a black bear its very difficult to see a change in colour and only then on the inside of the ears is it noticeable.

“Did you get anything from Quack?” asked Jaws
“What do you mean” replied Cypher
“Oh ever since he watched goldfinger, he is now into making gadgets when we go on these code black missions”…”and he wants to be known as ‘Q’”…. “he has got some way to go though, see this pen?” jaws pulled out a metallic grey pen with a strange looking lustre to it, “well it can write upside down”

“what else can it do? Asked Cypher excitedly
“nothing, that’s the point, some way to go” replied Jaws

They walked into the shop… made the noise of the bell as they entered.. “Old technology man” thought Cypher as they approached the counter. The Shop Assistant looked at them in a strange way, but they were expecting this, it was Canada after all.

“We would like to purchase some beer please” said Jaws
“well you’ve come to the right place” said the Assistant
“Excellent” said Jaws “I’ll have a slab of Tooheys New”
“sorry sir”
“Oh.. excuse my Australianism, I’ll have a 24 pack of tooheys new my good man”
“I, know what you meant, we just don’t have any”
“beers of the galaxy?” thought Jaws
“OK then, I’ll have some of your fine Canadian Molson beer, cold preferably”
“don’t have any of that either”
“Labbats”
“no”
“How about Unibroue Eleven”
“no”
“This is a beer shop isn’t it” as ked Cypher as he adjusted his shades in the window and thought.. “I do look good, no wonder that she bear found me irrestible”
“Oh yes, finest in the galaxy”
“Ok” said Jaws “lets try some European beer, ermmm Carlsberg”
“nope”
“Heineken”
“nope”
“Stella Artois” said Jaws in his finest French sounding accent even though it is a Belgian beer and he didn’t know what accents the Belgians had.
“Sold completely out of that sir, its very popular”
“OK, OK.. British beer… Worthington?”
“Yes sir”
“I’ll have 24 of your finest Worthingtons then” said Jaws
“Ohhhhhhhhhh, I’m sorry I thought you were talking to me, my name is Frank Worthington”
Jaws was starting to get irritated “Abbot ale”
“Its very warm sir”
“Oh that’s ok, it tastes good warm”
“I mean really warm”
“Look” said Jaws menacingly, “I don’t care how f***ing warm it is just get me some”
“Sorry the moose has drunk it”
“JUST TELL ME WHAT YOU DO HAVE” yelled Jaws
“We have Budweiser sir”

Jaws and Cypher looked at each other, and from somewhere in the back a strange metallic voice could be heard but the words could not be made out, and a French accent saying “zose damn pirates, lets get out of ’ere befor zey catch us”

They pushed passed the Assistant but the room behind was empty.. Cypher took hold of the assistant and said “I think ‘Q’ might want to probe you a little” and then added “do you know anywhere I can find a nice baby size check shirt”

“’Q’, its Jaws here”.. "think we have some progress, beam us up"…

… deliberate plagarism from month python
...I can only presume that a "month python" is a pirate colloquialism for the dreaded Sperm Pressure that we hear is decimating the pirate ranks. Amazing how quickly art becomes reality.

An Ace Up The Sleeve

[cue the pulp fiction music]

Worthington screamed as the teddy bear and the shark picked him up and activated the transporter. They marched through the pirate cruiser in perfect step, the teddy bear just with a stylish pair of sunglasses, and the shark with his sunnies and black tuxedo. The Toyota camel in the black suit had nothing on these guys.

[The pulp fiction music dies down as they enter Quack's office]

"Hey, Q, we've got a new prisoner for you!"
"Oh, great, it's double-o-never..."
"Geez, what's your problem?"
"Ah, it's this damn blockage thing, everyone's on edge - sorry, mate."

Quack looked at the pathetic specimen they brought in with disdain.

"Well, what do you want me to do with him?"
"Probe him, toy with him, the usual."
"Are you kidding? He's an ugly little runt! I wouldn't even have him as an extra on my set!"
"He's involved in the Budweiser plot, we need that info. Where's your dirty little sidekicks, anyway?"
"They're on a talent scouting mission. You know how important variety is on my show."

---

Meanwhile, a new show has appeared on Altarian TV...

Two Altarians in tacky suits are on a stage.

"Hello, and welcome back to Altarian Idol! We're here to find the hottest stars among you, so we can introduce them to the outside galaxy and show everyone what hidden talents we Altarians have!"

The crowd cheered.

"We've seen some real hotties already, but we know there's more out there, so if you've got the looks, and you're hot to trot, go to your nearest audition centre, where us judges will personally work you over and see if you've got what it takes to be a star!"

"And.... cut!" the cameraman mouthed.

The Altarian hosts waved to the crowd, and walked to their dressing room. One of the hosts reached over and snapped the other one's neck. He reached down his throat, and pulled out a Sectoid head.

"These Altarians are idiots.", the Sectoid muttered.
The other Sectoid nodded, and helped his buddy out of the Altarian body-suit.

---

Quack paused.
"I do have a backup crew - but they're fairly inexperienced, they're still in their final stages of training."

He reached over and activated a security camera.

The screen showed the inside of someone's quarters. Two under-age Sectoids were sitting on the floor, playing the board-game Operation. One of them was ramming a needle in the human figure, getting an electric shock, and loving it. The other one punched the first one, and rammed his needle into the figure to get an electric shock himself. They started wrestling over the game, when both of them started getting electric shocks. They grinned and high-fived as the electricity coursed through their bodies.

Jaws nodded approvingly. "Looks like they enjoy their work, at least. I think they're ready."
"Very well, we'll call in the replacement probers."

---

The young Sectoids had shown a lot of enthusiasm and imagination in their work, Quack was very impressed, and decided they were ready for active duty. Sectoids matured very quickly, especially when they're grown in a vat, Quack mused. As Worthington's mind was assaulted, Quack could reach in with his psychic powers, and find all his secrets. Worthington had a secret, and Quack almost had it... there.

Quack paused. "We have a problem", he said quietly.

---

The door opened to the run-down apartment, and a seedy-looking man in a beret walked in. He approached a card table, where a lot of seedy characters were sitting, and smoking cheap cigars.

"It's done." said the visitor.

He pulled out a folder, and spread its contents on the table. It had photos of a handsome teddy bear with glasses and a cute brown bear making out in a quaint Canadian village.

"Truly remarkable. Such focus, such close-ups... you've done the paparazzi proud, my son." one of the old cigar-smokers said.

"What do you think?" the visitor asked one of the characters sitting at the table.

The she-bear reached over, flicked through the photos, and nodded approvingly.

War of the Worlds

They had decided to approach the main MWC Homestead by landing some distance away, believing that bringing the Pegasus into teleport range would give them away to the watchful farmers. Thus, a small landing craft deposited the four pirates several miles away and they walked in the bright summer Midwestern sunshine towards their goal. As they crested a hill, they came across a rider sat upon a chestnut white stallion, observing their progress.

The rider possessed a certain grace and nobility, sitting there upon the magnificent steed. He wore simple rainment and a single white jewel adorned his brow, held there with a silver band. A haunting, ethereal music flowed around the pirates as they approached the mysterious stranger.

"Er...could ya turn the music off?" asked Wombat.

The rider pressed a button on the saddle and the haunting music ceased. He looked down at the pirates. "Ahh yes...we know of you, Wombo. And your friends Cooler, Dooley and Jam. Under the munificent leadership of the serene...Ray the Wanderer...we have come to know of many things regarding you and your fellows. I scry'd your progress six leagues hence."

"You might want to check your facts," said Wombat, informing the stranger of their correct names. "I'd say you'd better check out your scryer, friar! And what is it your boss is wondering? Which league does he play in?"

The stranger fished out a small crystal ball from a saddle bag, examined it and read the label underneath. "Damn Walmart crystal balls..." muttered the rider. "Anyway, my boss - er, Ray the serene wonders nothing, impudent animal! He WANDERS...across these many plains of existence...searching for truth...banishing evil. I am Theoden of Rohan! Hail and well met! We have no time for games...the fate of the Metaverse rests on our combined efforts. I bring you THIS warning: a great threat exists in PARIS, France - you will have no choice but to venture there and face this peril. Heed me well, animals!!"

"OK. Right, then." said Killa. "Look Rowan, much as we appreciate the effort, we've just come from there. Now, do you have anything on the farmers up ahead?"

"Er...well...no. We evoked a metaphysical connection with our friend Obi-Wan who told us you would be in this location."

"And was that by means of the scrying network?" queried Killa.

"Um...he sent me an SMS, actually. But I COULD have used the seeing stones! Except Ray doesn't let anyone use those, usually...I know how to, though..."

"Much as we'd love to stay and chat," said Hurley, "we need to move on. Give our love to Ray, and tell him to pop over at some stage. Give our love to Judy, too - we owe him a beer."

"SO BE IT, pirates! You carry the fate of us all, little ones! You four will be... the Fellowship of the Pira..oh, never mind." The rider suddenly made a series of gesticulations, coloured flames cascaded from his arms and the man and horse were enveloped in smoke. When the smoke cleared, the rider and horse remained. "Bugger." Theoden turned the horse and cantered over the next hill, away from the MWC Homestead.

"Bye, Rowan!" sang the pirates.

The four surveyed the Homestead from the top of the next rise. It had grown somewhat since Wombat's last memory - more buildings, including a large communication tower and a strange central complex. There were no signs of guards; obviously, the farmers were not expecting any visitors and likely out enjoying the midwestern summer. The pirates cautiously moved towards the central complex, when suddenly ajm froze, straining to hear something faint. "I haven't heard that sound since...." He dashed up a side alley and disappeared.

Hurley looked at his friends. "I'll check out that comms tower - perhaps you could investigate that central complex?" They parted company and Killa and Wombat made their way forward. They entered the complex and moved towards a large central chamber, through banks of sophisticated computing equipment that clearly did not originate on Earth.

Wombat and Killa peered into the large chamber - and saw rows of babies, cared for and monitored...by Torians! "This is the vision from Nadreck's mind!" whispered Wombat. "What are they? What's going on?"

"Why - they are the Children of the Corn." said a soft voice behind him. Wombat and Killa spun round - to be face to face with two midwestern farmers, identically dressed in overalls, with the names 'plephart' and 'surther' over their left front pockets. Their energy rifles were aimed at the pirates' heads.

Hurley advanced slowly to the comm tower and made his way up to the main command console. Occasional farmer technicians appeared but they were no match for the lethal skills of a penguin raised in the Shao-lin tradition. Hurley usually never spoke of this heritage; indeed, he had arranged for his ceremonial dragon tattoo to be positioned where no one was ever likely to look. His training also meant he played a mean game of Mah-Jong. Eventually, he gained the uppermost floor of the tower and examined the display readout for the most recent Jawa transmission:

The rider suddenly made a series of gesticulations, coloured flames cascaded from his arms and the man and horse were enveloped in smoke. When the smoke cleared, the rider and horse remained. "Bugger." Theoden turned the horse and cantered over the next hill,

‘Cypher, I’m sorry. I can’t train you to become a drop bear. It would knock the stuffing out of you.’ Killa Koala replied.

Cypher was disheartened being a teddy bear was a bear. His mutation process had gone all wrong. Pontius was right – this was not a toy. Also, Australian animals like wombats, koalas, penguins, sharks, and psychic ducks seemed to have a hard time relating to North American animals like a brown bear.

Cypher was disheartened, but then he had a wild idea. He find the wizard.. no not a Fellowship wizard, but one of the most intimidating figures in the Metaverse, Ice Mole. Ice Mole did not spend much time on the DOOM as he was always too busy conquering the galaxy. However, when anyone needed help figuring out the metaphysical rules governing the universe, Ice Mole knew how to express them in simple mathematical terms. If anyone could figure out the calculus of transformation, it would be Ice Mole.

Cypher went to Ice Mole and plead his case. He needed to become a Australian version of a bear that was capable of enduring the rigors of Drop Bear training. Ice Mole nodded sagely. He assured Cypher that he could adjust the machine to make him an Australian icon, a classic even.

Cypher was nervous and he covered his eyes with his paws while the transformation was in progress. The first thing he noticed was that his fur had turned white. Cypher was no longer a teddy bear version of a black bear. Cypher was the Bundaberg Rum bear.

Not only was his new form suitable for Drop Bear training, but his new found identify as a booze mascot would make him the perfect warrior in the battle against the Budweiser conspiracy and traditional family values.

Cypher turned to thank Ice Mole, but Ice Mole was already gone.
‘Spooky’ Cypher thought aloud.

Cypher took one more look in the mirror and decided to keep the shades. He had to get back to work. He owned Wombat some cordinates in the Arcean space...

Pontius was in the lab.

Mrs Pax: When are you gonna finish that thing.

Pontius: I need EBZ to stop spacing our test subjects, then I'll be done.

Mrs Pax set the transmorgifrier to Human and instantly turned it on. The Test Altarian morphed into an ape but with no arms or legs.

Pontius: Ahhh progress. It's not got the genus and specie right but we're in the right family.

Lets try to turn him into a rat now shall we?

Ztttttttttttttttt. A hamster resulted, then a ginea pig, then a mouse.

Pontius: I think we better work on it a bit more. It's having trouble with the upper forms of life. But I could turn him into a crustacean with no defects at this point.

Mrs Pax: We only need one crab around here. When it's ready, and it better be soon, you let me know.

Pontius: Yes dear, Whatever you say dear, I know you're right dear.

SLAP!!!!

Hmmmm guess that only works with wives.

Pontius - wow, you sure write a lot of Mrs. Pax stories. Is there anything you'd like to share with the rest of us? :-p

Cypher - Good choice. I hope those videos educated you on your duties as the Bundy bear. Just watch out for spilling drinks on that white fur, it's a b***h to get dry-cleaned. You could always turn Ashlyn into a teddy bear if you miss that look, you know.

/quack looks at all the mrs. pax stories

Hmm. Maybe not.

‘Cypher!’ the yell of an angry Mrs. Pax echoed through the stateroom.

Cypher Pax has been hoping that Mrs. Pax wouldn’t notice he was home.

‘Did you take our daughter on a black ops mission?’ asked Mrs. Pax/

‘If I told you, I would have to kill you.’ Replied Cypher.

‘I can’t believe you! What were you thinking?’ screamed Mrs. Pax.

‘Well… ummm.. it was Bring Your Daughter to Work day and Ashlyn really loves the other animals.’ Cypher managed to stammer.

‘Why are you a polar bear now?’ asked Mrs. Pax. Previously, she had be too angry to notice the difference.

‘I am not a polar bear, I am the Bundy bear – it’s Australian’ Cypher said proudly.

‘Rum bear, my butt. How could you? You should be a human again. As soon as Pontius fixes his trans-ma-thing-a-jig – you’re going to be a human again. I am so angry.… oh and stop trying to change the subject… did any other ‘dads’ bring their children on a back ops mission?’

‘Umm, no. Jaws was going to leave her with his camera man, but she wanted to come along. Wild Wombat had an Uzi made for her, it was frictionless so it would not heat up so he could safely chew on it after firing. Also, the firing mechanism is disabled when anything is within 5 ft of the end of the barrel. It’s a perfect toy for an infant…’ Cypher Pax was on a roll.

‘A perfect toy for an infant – a fire arm!?! Have you LOST YOUR MIND? What if she got shot?’

‘The mission was a cakewalk, the aliens don’t even fire back at that difficultly.’

‘If I ask Wild Wombat, you’re sure he’ll tell me the mission was a cakewalk? You are not to take our daughter on combat missions. DO YOU UNDERSTAND?

Mrs. Pax ended Cypher Pax role and things went downhill from there.

LATER at the undisclosed South Seas Black Ops Bar on the Retox:
The animals sit around playing their next mission and downing bottles of Shiraz.

Their planning is interrupted by a crash of a nearby table being splintered into a million pieces. Several other tables have been similiarly smashed.
‘Will you cut it out, mate. No more drop bear practice in the bar!’ cried Hurley.

Cypher sat up and poured himself another glass.

‘Who’d thought that a big bear like that would have that small of a tolerance. He couldn’t have had more than a case or two of wine.’ Killa Koala pondered aloud.

‘Don’t worry, mate. Mrs. Pax is bound to take you back and long as you stay free of lice.’ Jaws said as he tried to reassure Cypher.

A LITTLE LATER:
The animals moved Cypher to the gazebo. He needed some time to sleep this one off. Cypher would be spending a lot of quality time on the Retox...
